WR Kendrick Bourne Set for Visits With 49ers and Commanders
Veteran wide receiver Kendrick Bourne is drawing significant interest on the free-agent market, with visits lined up this week. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Bourne will meet with the San Francisco 49ers on Monday before traveling to meet the Washington Commanders on Tuesday. Reports indicate that both teams already have the framework of a potential deal in place, signaling a strong chance he could sign quickly depending on how the visits go.
Familiar Territory in San Francisco
San Francisco’s interest is hardly a surprise. Injuries have thinned the 49ers’ wide receiver group, and Bourne offers familiarity with the organization. The 30-year-old began his NFL career in the Bay Area after going undrafted out of Eastern Washington in 2017. Over four seasons with the 49ers, he became a steady contributor, catching 137 passes for 1,769 yards and 11 touchdowns across 58 games. While he wasn’t a featured option, his reliability made him a valuable depth piece in Kyle Shanahan’s offense.
A potential reunion would provide San Francisco with a proven veteran who already knows much of the system. Given the team’s current depth issues, Bourne could immediately compete for playing time and serve as an insurance policy behind Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel.
A Different Opportunity in Washington
Washington also makes sense as a landing spot. The Commanders are reshaping their offense under new leadership and could benefit from more consistency in their receiver room, particularly behind Terry McLaurin. Bourne’s experience and versatility would give quarterback Jayden Daniels another dependable target as he develops in his rookie season.
While San Francisco might offer him a more straightforward path to snaps in the short term, Washington could represent a steadier long-term opportunity, especially if the Commanders want to surround Daniels with experienced playmakers.
Bourne’s Career Arc
After a solid stint in San Francisco, Bourne reached his peak with the New England Patriots in 2021. That season, he posted career highs with 55 receptions for 800 yards and five touchdowns, proving he could be more than just a rotational piece. However, injuries and inconsistency limited his production in subsequent years. At age 30, he’s no longer an ascending player, but he remains a capable veteran who can strengthen a receiver rotation.
