Zero RB Drafters, Meet Your Guy: Rico Dowdle

Rico Dowdle Carries Redraft Sleeper Appeal Entering 2026

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rico Dowdle is entering his first season in Pittsburgh after signing a two-year contract worth over $12 million in free agency.

Dowdle joins a Steelers backfield that already includes Jaylen Warren, who put together a career year in 2025 with 1,291 scrimmage yards and eight touchdowns. Pittsburgh also has a new coaching staff in place for 2026, led by Mike McCarthy, who previously coached Dowdle in Dallas during his breakout 2024 season.

Dowdle has proven himself capable of handling a lead role in each of the last two seasons. He posted 1,328 scrimmage yards and five touchdowns for the Cowboys in 2024, then followed that up with 1,373 scrimmage yards and seven touchdowns for the Panthers in 2025, taking over Carolina’s backfield after Chuba Hubbard was slowed by injury.

The pairing with Warren in Pittsburgh sets up as a complementary split rather than a clear timeshare. Warren has established himself as the more effective receiver out of the backfield, while Dowdle profiles as the stronger between-the-tackles runner with an edge in short-yardage and goal-line work. That division of labor gives Dowdle a path to touchdown equity even if Warren continues to see more targets.

Dowdle’s track record in a similarly crowded backfield last season offers some reassurance. Even while sharing touches with Hubbard for stretches of 2025, Dowdle still delivered strong, productive fantasy weeks once he settled into the lead role in Carolina.

At his current redraft price near the RB32-33 range, Dowdle looks like a value. He is being drafted behind backs with less proven three-down ability, and his history of stepping into featured roles gives him a real chance to outperform his draft slot, particularly if he claims a larger early-down share in Pittsburgh’s revamped offense.
