Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed Wednesday that wide receivers Xavier Worthy and Jalen Royals will return to practice as the team prepares for its Week 3 game against the New York Giants on Sunday night.

Worthy has been sidelined since suffering a full tear of his right labrum in the season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers. The injury occurred on the opening series when Worthy collided with tight end Travis Kelce. The 22-year-old rookie missed Kansas City’s Week 2 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles, a rematch of Super Bowl LVII, which resulted in a second consecutive loss to open the season. His return to the practice field marks a step toward availability, though his status for Sunday remains uncertain.

Royals, who missed the first two games of the season with a knee injury, is also set to practice. The undrafted rookie joined the Chiefs in the offseason and has yet to make his regular-season debut. He remains further down the depth chart, but his participation indicates progress in his recovery.

The Chiefs enter Week 3 still seeking their first win of the 2025 season. Kansas City has struggled to establish rhythm on offense without Worthy, who was drafted in the first round to provide speed on the perimeter. The injury to Worthy forced adjustments at wide receiver, with Marquise Brown and Skyy Moore playing larger roles through the first two weeks. Royals’ absence has also limited depth options at the position.

Kansas City’s receiving group has been under pressure to deliver consistent production alongside Kelce, who remains the focal point of the passing attack. With Worthy returning to practice, the Chiefs may regain some of the explosiveness they hoped to add through the rookie’s playmaking ability. However, his ability to handle contact and game speed after a significant shoulder injury will determine his readiness.

The Chiefs face the Giants at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 3 in prime time. New York enters the matchup 1-1 following a win over the Washington Commanders in Week 2. Kansas City will look to avoid a 0-3 start, which would mark the franchise’s slowest opening stretch in recent years.

Reid did not provide details on how much Worthy or Royals will participate in practice or whether either receiver will be active on Sunday. The official game status for both players will be determined later in the week following continued evaluation.

The Chiefs will release their first official injury report on Wednesday afternoon, which will indicate the level of practice participation for both wideouts. Updates are expected through the week as the team prepares for the Giants.
