Cousins and DeFilippo Raving About WR Stefon Diggs
Date: August 5th | 2018
The Vikings just extended Stefon Diggs with a five-year extension with a total value of $81 million according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
ESPN Twin Cities reporter Matthew Coller broke down a wealth of information that included rave reviews for Diggs from both new quarterback Kirk Cousins and offensive coordinator, John DeFilippo.
“I love that guy,” DeFilippo said. “He’s exactly what you want in a player — and in my mind, a superstar player. He is smart. He loves football. He’s assignment sound. Coachable. He’s got a lot of energy. Explosive and he catches the football. That describes pretty good receivers in this league.”
When discussing Diggs’ route running ability, Cousins had this to say: “If he had (only) one route that jumped out, I don’t think he gets the contract that they offered him,” Cousins said. “It’s because he can run the entire route tree at a level that would warrant wanting him around. Whether it’s a nine-yard stop route, a double-move, a three-step slant, whether it’s a post…the ability to track the ball, go get the football, play bigger than his frame, he can do just about everything.”
Stefon Diggs may have been behind Adam Thielen in fantasy last season when all was said and done, but he still finished the season as WR19 in PPR leagues despite only playing in 14 games. With Cousins now under center, Diggs could easily take over as the teams WR1 this season as Thielen was simply a better fit for Case Keenum last season in the slot, whereas Cousins likes to stretch the field a bit more. Coller also wisely noted in his article that Diggs led the league with a 64% contested catch rate according to profootballfocus.com. When looking at ADP’s, Diggs and Thielen are both in the third round neighborhood. Each of them are a stellar value at that spot as both offer enticing WR1 upside on what should be a highly potent Vikings offense.
Kyle Rudolph Top 5 TE?
Date: July 21th | 2018
Minnesota Vikings beat writer Andrew Krammer believes TE Kyle Rudolph will play a significant role in the team’s offense in 2018.
Krammer’s expectations make sense. Not only does Vikings OC Joe DeFilippo have a history of featuring the tight end in his gameplan, but QB Kirk Cousins also has a plus track record with tight ends — he made Jordan Reed a household name when healthy and played a key role in rejuvenating Vernon Davis’ career during their tie together with the Redskins. Moreover, while Rudolph has had issues staying on the field early in his career, he’s played in 52 consecutive games since 2015.
Rudolph is also the lone fantasy relevant tight end employed by the Vikings — the slated TE2 David Morgan only has 11 receptions to his name and expected TE3 fifth-round draft pick Tyler Conklin is an unknown and could be strapped for snap — which bodes well for his fantasy value in 2018. With a new offensive coordinator, plus, the addition of Kirk Cousins, Rudolph is poised for a career year. And with aging veterans Jimmy Graham, Delanie Walker and Greg Olsen full of question marks, it wouldn’t surprise me if Rudolph finished as a top 5 tight end in 2018. I’m taking him over the aforementioned thirtysomethings.
