Underdog Fantasy Draft Recap: Weekly Winners Contest

Jahmyr Gibbs

Drafted 6 | ADP 4.4

Drafting from the six spot isn’t my favorite. I’m comfortable with any of the top five picks (Chase, Barkley, Bijan, Gibbs, or JJ). After that, I feel there is a tougher decision to be made. Usually, if those are the first five picks, I’ll go Lamb or Puka. Luckily for me, in this draft, Gibbs fell to me here at six. I have seen Giibs go as high as pick two this season and feel extremely confident with him as my top RB. 

Lamar Jackson

Drafted Pick 19 | ADP 17

I never go QB early, but I wanted to mix things up for this draft, and I’m glad I did. With the weekly winners contest, you’re looking for an elite lineup, something that will score a ridiculous amount of points for one NFL week. Wasting time with a backup QB is not an ideal strategy. The contest is only $10 an entry, so go big or go home. We’re not worrying about bye weeks or handcuffs; we want to score as many points as possible for any given week. Lamar gives me a great chance to do that. 

Chase Brown

Drafted Pick 30 | ADP 27.6

The Begnals seem like a great fantasy team to target this season. I’m not impressed with their defense, and I believe their offense will need to keep scoring if they want to stay in games. Brown fell just shy of 1,000 yards rushing last year, but his contribution in the passing game is why I like him so much this season. The 25-year-old RB had 54 receptions last year, and I feel he could get in the Kamara-range of high 60’s  in 2025. 

Kenneth Walker III

Picked 43 | ADP 49.1

This is where I could see a lot of fantasy readers disagreeing with my decision here. The truth is, I had my heart set on getting Mike Evans, who went two picks before. I didn’t want to pick another Lion and take Jameson Williams, and I feel Metcalf’s ADP is too high. Everyone else seemed like a bigger reach than Walker. 

Walker is a boom-or-bust player, which is perfect for this draft format. Having three stud RBs allows us to ignore this position for quite a while – 10 rounds as it turned out. 

Zay Flowers

Picked 54 | ADP 58.3

This worked out perfectly in my opinion. My first wide receiver of the day gives me a stack with my QB. Flowers ranked 23rd in the NFL in targets last season. Yes, I know he didn’t find the end zone much, but for this draft strategy, it’s hard not to like this pick. 

Chris Olave

Picked 78 | ADP 75.6

The quarterback situation in New Orleans is a mess, but if anyone can put something together that could work in the short term, it’s new Head Coach Kellen Moore.

The Saints will likely tank the back half of the season for a higher draft capital if they can’t string together some wins in the first few months of the season. Olave is a talented young wide receiver with a lot of upside. He has had trade rumors pinned to him for a while now, and could get moved at the trade deadline. If not, I’m sure his motivation will be to pad his stats, as he’ll likely want his big payday contract soon.

It’s a fantasy football cliché, but always draft good WRs on bad teams, as they’ll always be throwing late in games. 

The WR streak continues for three more rounds

• Jayden Reed (GB) 
• Darnell Mooney (ATL) 
• Josh Downs (IND)

All three of these guys have big-play ability, but are overshadowed by their team’s WR1 or a new rookie. They’re not the sexy pick, but they’re productive and can easily lead their respective teams in passing yards on any given Sunday. 

Later Rounds

Picks 11 to 18

Quality tight ends are practically free this year. If I didn’t draft Dallas Goedert, I could have taken Jonnu Smith, Tyler Warren, Strange, Ferrgie, Pitts Kincaid. It’s almost ridiculous the quality of starters you can get late this season.

Christian Kirk, Jalen McMillan, and Wan’Dale Robinson were added as depth. All of them have the ability to have a random big game this season.  Bhasyshul Tuten and Singletary were added late, as there is a limit on the number of wide receivers you can select. 

Overall, I feel great about this roster. I think it has the chance to compete in a weekly winner high score this season
