Tank Is The Perfect Name For What He’s Battled Back From
Houston Texans wide receiver Tank Dell is being eased back in during training camp and the early part of the season, even as he continues to look strong in practice. Head coach DeMeco Ryans has been consistently positive about Dell’s return, saying the team is “taking care of him the proper way” as he works back from a devastating knee injury.
Dell tore his ACL, MCL, and LCL, dislocated his knee, and suffered meniscus damage in Week 16 of the 2024 season, an injury serious enough to require multiple surgeries and force him to miss the entire 2025 campaign. The Texans kept him off the PUP list entering this year’s camp, a meaningful step that allows him to participate more fully in practice, and he has since taken the field in full pads for individual and team drills for the first time since the injury, catching passes from quarterback C.J. Stroud in recent sessions.
Insert cliche statement: “Doctor said I wouldn’t be able to walk again.” – He didn’t say that, but seriously, his leg was severely damaged.
This comeback is nothing short of remarkable given the severity of the original injury. Before going down, Dell had established himself as one of the more electric young receivers in the league, catching 98 of his 156 targets for 1,376 yards and 10 touchdowns across his first 25 career games, a pace of just over 55 yards per game. His combination of route-running precision and big-play ability made him a favorite target of Stroud’s whenever healthy, though durability has been a running theme of his career, dating back to a broken leg that ended his rookie season early.
The Texans’ cautious approach makes sense given both the injury’s severity and a receiver room that no longer needs to rush him back. Nico Collins remains the clear WR1, and the team has added depth with Jayden Higgins, Xavier Hutchinson, and Jaylin Noel over the past two seasons, giving Dell the flexibility to work back into a featured role gradually rather than being thrust immediately into heavy usage.
Fantasy Impact
For fantasy purposes, Dell represents one of the more fascinating boom-or-bust bets available in drafts this summer. The talent and target-earning ability that made him a breakout star in 2023 haven’t disappeared, but the uncertainty around his conditioning, explosiveness, and workload following a multi-ligament knee reconstruction is real. Given his draft cost, likely to fall outside the first several rounds in most formats, Dell offers legitimate late-round sleeper upside for managers willing to accept the risk that comes with his recovery timeline.
