Super Bowl LV Betting Preview

The Kansas City Chiefs will try to defend their Super Bowl title against the Tom Brady-led Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV on Feb. 7. The Buccaneers will be hosting the Chiefs, who had many fans biting their nails at first when they watched a hot start from the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game.

On the other side, it was not pretty for the Buccaneers either, but Brady and his team were able to ward off a second-half comeback from the Green Bay Packers to claim a victory in the NFC Championship Game. This also means that the Buccaneers will become the first NFL team in history to play in the Super Bowl in their home stadium.

Super Bowl Date and Location

  • Date: Sunday, Feb. 7
  • Location: Tampa Bay, Fla.
  • Time: 6:30 pm ET
  • TV and Live Stream: CBS, CBS All Access

Even though the Pro Bowl is canceled and we won’t be providing sports picks against the spread on this game, Super Bowl LV will still follow exactly two weeks after Championship Sunday. Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay will be the stadium hosting the event.

Kansas City Chiefs (14-2)

MVP candidate Patrick Mahomes was almost perfect in the regular season. He threw 38 touchdowns and just six interceptions while also finishing second in the NFL with a total of 4,740 yards.

He could have arguably been first in passing, but he fell short in passing yards to Deshaun Watson because Mahomes sat out Week 17. The Chiefs already had the number one seed in the AFC sewn up, so there was no need to claim it.

Kansas City’s only defeat with Mahomes under center was in Week 5 to the Las Vegas Raiders. However, the Chiefs were able to respond with a 10-game winning streak, which arguably quieted many who thought this team was in trouble.

The second loss, of course, was when Mahomes sat out in Week 17. So if you look at it, the Chiefs were never really in danger of not going over the expected regular-season total of 11.5 wins on the year. Even though Kansas City had a great year and record, bettors were not rewarded at the same time. Bettors would find themselves usually with large spreads, and the Chiefs ended up 7-8 against the spread in the 15 regular-season games in which Mahomes started.

Also, the Chiefs ranked first in passing attempts and only 23rd in rushing attempts. They are most likely going to put the ball in Mahomes’ hands even more in the Super Bowl since the Buccaneers have a great run defense.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (11-5)

Tampa Bay was once a +5000 longshot to be a part of the Super Bowl. Then, they rocketed up after signing Brady to land around the fifth-best odds to win the NFC.

Tampa Bay suffered a pair of losses to division-winning Saints, which ultimately put them in a Wild Card spot. Even though they were not able to earn the NFC South crown, the Buccaneers were still able to cruise through the playoffs.

So the question is whether or not Brady will have the correct arsenal of weapons and excellent defense for a chance at another ring. He arguably has both on his side, so the odds are increasing in his favor.

Brady is likely to get the ball to Rob Gronkowski in critical situations as needed. This is expected because of their long-established history together and due to the defensive matchups. Chiefs cornerbacks Charvarius Ward and L’Jarius Sneed are excellent athletes at that position. Brady may look to shake things up and exploit linebacker matchups with Gronkowski as a target.

For example, in the last meeting between Kansas City and Tampa Bay, Gronkowski caught six passes for a total of 106 yards. He most likely will not have a game of that degree in this second matchup, but it should not be counted out.

Super Bowl Betting Odds

DraftKings has the spread and the over/under currently at:

  • Chiefs: -3 (-120)
  • Buccaneers: +3 (+100)
  • Over/Under: 56.5

* odds are subject to change

Super Bowl Betting Prediction

The Chiefs are looking to have wide receiver Sammy Watkins and running back Le’Veon Bell returns from injury for the big game. Both missed the team’s win over the Buffalo Bills. Both teams showed in the conference championship games that their defenses could handle great offenses. This will be key in this matchup too. The Buccaneers’ front line will be back and healthy, which should bolster their stout defense. This one will be close but look for MVP candidate Mahomes and company to win a second straight championship.
