[the_ad id=”105842″]San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is questionable to play Thursday night against the Los Angeles Rams due to recurring toe soreness.
The injury setback surfaced Monday after Purdy returned from a two-game absence to play in Sunday’s loss to Jacksonville. He completed 22 of 38 passes for 309 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in the defeat. Purdy also lost a fumble late in the game when hit by former 49ers defensive lineman Arik Armstead.
General manager John Lynch addressed Purdy’s status during a team briefing Monday. Lynch said the quarterback’s availability depends on whether he can turn it around on a short week. The 49ers were listed as estimated non-participants on Monday’s injury report, which is required despite the team not practicing due to the Thursday game.
Purdy originally injured his toe in the season opener against Seattle on September 7. The injury kept him out of victories over New Orleans and Arizona in Weeks 2 and 3. He returned to practice last week as a limited participant before being cleared Friday to start against Jacksonville.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Monday that Purdy experienced soreness after Sunday’s game. The quarterback practiced throughout last week and felt fine during the contest, but the adrenaline wore off afterward. Shanahan described the short turnaround as a totally different element regarding Purdy’s availability.
Backup Mac Jones would likely start if Purdy cannot play Thursday. Jones stepped in during Purdy’s absence and led the 49ers to wins in both starts. He completed 53 of 80 passes for 563 yards with four touchdowns and one interception over those two games.
Jones is dealing with his own injury concern. He re-aggravated a PCL sprain in his left knee during the Week 3 win over Arizona. The injury originally occurred during training camp in August. Jones told reporters after the Arizona game that the knee affected his play, though he finished the contest wearing a brace in the fourth quarter.
Despite the setback, Jones was listed as a full participant on Monday’s estimated injury report. He served as Purdy’s backup Sunday against Jacksonville and appears healthier than he was last week when he was limited in practice.
The 49ers enter Thursday’s game with a 3-1 record following the loss to Jacksonville. The Rams also stand at 3-1 after defeating Indianapolis in Week 4. Both teams are tied atop the NFC West standings alongside Seattle.
Purdy has thrown for 586 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions in two games this season. He was selected in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft and has been San Francisco’s starter since taking over during his rookie year.
The Thursday night kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 PM Eastern Time at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. San Francisco has won seven of its last nine regular season road games against Los Angeles since the Rams returned to the city in 2016.
