Carolina Panthers Looking to Add Playmakers in 2025
The 2025 NFL Draft order is set for those who didn’t make the postseason, and it’s ugly. Ten NFL teams didn’t win more than six games in the 2024 season; that’s twice as many teams as the previous season. With only a couple of quarterbacks with first-round grades in next year’s draft class and arguably seven teams hungry for new QBs in the top 10 of the draft, this offseason should be interesting.
Despite a disappointing 5-11 season, the Carolina Panther’s future isn’t as bleak as some may think. Bryce Young’s performance down the season’s stretch was impressive; he definitely has talent, but it’s evident that he could use some help.
On Monday, Panthers general manager Dan Morgan used the word “aggressive” five times during his season-ending press conference.
“I’m not really into quick fixes,” Morgan said. “I don’t think there’s such thing as a quick fix. Obviously, you want to fix things as soon as possible. But I’m just going to go into it as, hey, listen, we know where we were on the defensive side of the ball. We do have to continue to add playmakers on that side of the ball, so I just think we have to look at every avenue and explore every avenue to find those playmakers.
“And, hey, if we find somebody and we like somebody, whether trade, whether draft, whether the free agency, we’re going to explore every path.”
The Panthers hold the 8th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft but don’t have their 2nd rounder (39th), which was traded to the Bears. They do have the Vikings second-round pick (54th), but if Dan Morgan wants to add playmakers, he will have to make the most out of that first-rounder. Bryce Young threw for 2403 yards, 15 touchdowns, and nine interceptions in 14 games this season. The Panthers went 4-8 with Young under center. The former Alabama QB and 2023 first-overall pick is only 23 years old – and if we’ve learned anything this year from watching Sam Darnold or Baker Mayfield, it’s that things take time. You shouldn’t throw the baby out with the bath water. Adding a reliable target through the draft will make a world of difference for their franchise quarterback. WR Tetairoa McMillan from Arizona is a name to remember. He’s 6’5, 210 lbs, and put up huge numbers for the Wildcats last year. Most mock drafts have McMillan going in the 6th to 10th overall spot, but with the high demand for Quarterback in the NFL, he may fall to the Panthers at pick 9.
However, Dan Morgan wants to beef up the defense as well, so there are a lot of directions he could go in the first round. NFL free agency always shakes up team needs in the spring. Teams that can bring in skilled veterans make the to-do list more reasonable when the NFL Draft comes around. Stefon Diggs, Tee Higgins, and Chris Godwin are just a few players who could become options for the Panthers if the team is willing to offer a contract that is big enough.
