Rookies usually need time.

History has shown that the pro level is difficult to adjust to with complex route patterns and playbooks along with elite defensive coverages that can cause a young wide receiver a lot of adversity in their first year. The 2014 wide receiver class is not the case, and are in fact in a league of their own. This years WR rookie class might very well be the best group of young pass catchers to enter the NFL in decades.

On the first play of the second quarter of Sunday night’s game against the Dallas Cowboys Odell Beckham Jr connected on a pass from Eli Manning that has to be seen to be believed. People are calling it the “Catch of the Year “. Beckham’s amazing catch tops the highlight reel from this years rookie wide receiver class and has fans wondering what next week will bring.

Every summer I like to throw a few bucks on a NFL future prop bet in hopes of nailing the offensive rookie of the year award. It’s not that hard to find a site for betting online that offers these types of rookie odds, yet I always lean towards a wide receiver as the NFL is very much a passing league. This year I was completely torn. Sammy Watkins, Mike Evans, Odell Beckham, Brandin Cooks, Kelvin Benjamin are all making contributions as first round picks. Yet the list doesn’t stop there, Eagles Jordan Matthews, Dolphins Jarvis Landry and even Packers Davante Adams are becoming weekly flex players for fantasy owners. As the season progresses, you can be sure that players further down the list will began to make an impact. Josh Huff just set an Eagles record with an 107-yard kickoff return TD vs. Titans on Sunday and John Brown from the Cardinals played very well against the Seahawks and has made some lethal deep catches and might even get the best TD celebration award of the season, if that was a real thing.

With the NFL Draft already becoming one of the most exciting off-season events and the insanely NFL-ready crop of new talent entering the league each year, it’s any wonder why the NFL is such a monster for ratings and excitement.
