Noah Fant Fantasy
When it comes to the 2019 NFL Rookie class, there are two Iowa tight ends to get to know. The first one is Noah Fant and is a borderline first-round pick in your rookie drafts. The other is T.J. Hockenson and could end up being a second-round pick depending on where he lands. Fant could very well be the first tight end taken in the 2019 NFL Draft, and his combination of athleticism, size, and playmaking ability gives him a very nice ceiling as a dynasty asset.
With his size, the NFL Combine will be huge for Fant. Rumors have been going around about him having a 42 inch vertical. He’s got the speed and agility to put up some excellent numbers in just about every event. If he can put up sub-4.5 40-yard dash time at his size, I’ll be even more excited. With his size and athleticism, expect dynasty owners and NFL fans to start drooling over him when he lights up the Combine.

Fun Fact
One part of his game that I love about Fant is his ability to be a red zone threat. In his 2018 season, Noah Fant saw nine targets in the red zone. Of those nine targets, he brought in five of them for touchdowns.

Strengths and Weaknesses
When it comes to strengths for a guy like Fant, one of the biggest factors that we care about for dynasty leagues is upside. Anyone that comes into the league with the polished skills as a receiver that he has, in addition to his size and athleticism, cannot be overlooked. His combination of these skills along with his involvement in the passing game makes him someone with all the upside in the world. He runs great routes, has strong hands, is a mismatch for opposing defenders, and should thrive in the red zone.
One of the most obvious weaknesses that I saw in Fant’s game was his blocking. I do think the downplay on his blocking has been a bit overblown, and he’s shown that he’s capable. He spent more time running routes. He could definitely improve on his route running, but has the tools and basic skills and I expect this to improve with time.
Best Fit: NFL Scheme
As far as a fit in the NFL goes, I don’t see a particular scheme being better or worse for Fant. The biggest thing that I’m concerned about with him is the opportunity. Last year we saw a very highly touted rookie in Dallas Goedert land in one of the worst possible spots for a rookie tight end and we saw just how quickly his dynasty value fell. Being more of an offensive weapon than a pass-blocker, all Fant needs is the opportunity.
It’s hard to think of any NFL team that couldn’t use a pass-catching playmaker of a tight end. With his ability to stretch the field and provide a mismatch for opposing defenders, he just needs the opportunity and a fairly pass-heavy offense in order to make an immediate impact.
Dynasty Factor
Fant is going to be a matchup nightmare for opposing defense as a 6’4″ athletic playmaker who can stretch the field. He’s used to running routes as a tight end rather than blocking, which is already a good sign for him as he looks forward at his career in the NFL. Look for him to be a highly involved part of an NFL offense regardless of which team he lands within the red zone as well as between the 20’s.
It’s hard to think of any NFL team that couldn’t use a playmaker at the tight end position. There’s only a handful of landing spots that would really hurt Fant’s value, and that’s where the late first-round pick makes more sense. With his skill set, I don’t expect any team to draft him for the purpose of blocking. I fully expect him to be drafted on an offense that wants to utilize him early on. If he was more of a project type of prospect (i.e. David Njoku in the 2017 NFL Draft), I wouldn’t be as keen to use a first-round pick on him. With his unique combination of size, skills, and athleticism, Fant has a legitimate chance at being an Ertz or Kelce type of tight end in the NFL, and ultimately, for your dynasty team.
