NFL Power Rankings Week 7

After bullying the 49ers in Week 7, the Rams maintain the top spot in this week’s rankings, and the rest of the top ten sees some stability for the first time in 2018. There is little change (or hope) among the bottom teams in our rankings.

As always, these rankings loosely reflect my current Super Bowl odds.

Los Angeles Rams

Power Ranking: 1

  • Record: 7-0
  • Previous Rank: 1
  • Week 7: Win @ 49ers, 39-10
  • Week 8: vs GB

Another week, another dominant performance from the best team in the league. Without our first Le’Veon Bell sighting of 2018, Todd Gurley has made a pretty open-and-shut case that he’s the best RB in football.

New England Patriots

Power Ranking: 2

  • Record: 5-2
  • Previous Rank: 2
  • Week 7: Win @ Bears, 38-31
  • Week 8: Monday Night Football @ BUF

Playing without Gronk, the Patriots also lost emerging rookie RB Sony Michel early on in Week 7. New England prevailed in a very entertaining game, and got some encouraging news on Michel on Monday.

New Orleans Saints

Power Ranking: 3

  • Record: 5-1
  • Previous Rank: 3
  • Week 7: Win @ Ravens, 24-23
  • Week 8: Sunday Night Football @ MIN

New Orleans won an incredibly tough game, on the road, against a good team last week. Let no missed extra point overshadow that.

Kansas City Chiefs

Power Ranking: 4

  • Record: 6-1
  • Previous Rank: 4
  • Week 7: Win vs Bengals, 45-10
  • Week 8: vs TB

The Chiefs offense put on an absolute laser show against the Bengals on Sunday Night Football. It’s scary to think of what they might do against a much worse Tampa defense.

Baltimore Ravens

Power Ranking: 5

  • Record: 4-3
  • Previous Rank: 5
  • Week 7: Loss vs Saints, 24-23
  • Week 8: @ CAR

Even though the way the Ravens lost to the Saints (K Justin Tucker missed his first extra point of his career) was shocking for everyone watching and gut-wrenching for Baltimore fans, it’s the reason NFL fans tune in every week.

Minnesota Vikings

Power Ranking: 6

  • Record: 4-2-1
  • Previous Rank: 7
  • Week 7: Win @ Jets, 37-17
  • Week 8: Sunday Night Football vs NO

After dominating the Jets in Week 7, the Vikings will host a formidable Saints team that hasn’t forgotten about the Minneapolis Miracle.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Power Ranking: 7

  • Record: 3-2-1
  • Previous Rank: 8
  • Week 7: Bye
  • Week 8: vs CLE

The Steelers get their first look at Baker Mayfield this week. Imagine telling someone prior to the season that Mayfield would play at Heinz Field before Le’Veon Bell in 2018.

Los Angeles Chargers

Power Ranking: 8

  • Record: 5-2
  • Previous Rank: 9
  • Week 7: Win vs Titans, 20-19
  • Week 8: Bye

Philip Rivers and WR Tyrell Williams continued to showcase a big-play rapport in London. For their flaws, the Chargers should be thrilled to enter their bye week at 5-2.

Carolina Panthers

Power Ranking: 9

  • Record: 4-2
  • Previous Rank: 13
  • Week 7: Win @ Eagles, 21-17
  • Week 8: vs BAL

The Panthers’ fourth quarter comeback in Philadelphia felt like a signature win for Carolina. They have a chance for another when the Ravens come to Bank of America Stadium this week.

Green Bay Packers

Power Ranking: 10

  • Record: 3-2-1
  • Previous Rank: 10
  • Week 7: Bye
  • Week 8: @ LAR

The Packers travel to L.A. to face the Rams in one of the marquee matchups of Week 8. Green Bay could finish the weekend anywhere from first to last in the NFC North.

Philadelphia Eagles

Power Ranking: 11

  • Record: 3-4
  • Previous Rank: 6
  • Week 7: Loss vs Panthers, 21-17
  • Week 8: @ JAC (London)

The Eagles stunningly blew a 17-0 fourth quarter lead at home in Week 7 and are now below .500. They’ll head to London to play a dangerous Jacksonville team whose backs are also against the wall.

Chicago Bears

Power Ranking: 12

  • Record: 3-3
  • Previous Rank: 14
  • Week 7: Loss vs Patriots, 38-31
  • Week 8: vs NYJ

The Bears played the Patriots incredibly tough, and were half a yard away from tying the game on a Hail Mary as time expired. They should bounce back at home against the Jets.

Cincinnati Bengals

Power Ranking: 13

  • Record: 4-3
  • Previous Rank: 11
  • Week 7: Loss vs Chiefs, 45-10
  • Week 8: vs TB

On Sunday night, the Bengals looked like a team that gave up in the first quarter. They’ll have to play much harder, for much longer to beat the Buccaneers in Week 8.

Atlanta Falcons

Power Ranking: 14

  • Record: 3-4
  • Previous Rank: 15
  • Week 7: Win vs Giants, 23-20
  • Week 8: Bye

The Falcons take an up-and-down 3-4 record into their bye week wondering what could have been, but a playoff spot is still within the realm of possibility.

Houston Texans

Power Ranking: 15

  • Record: 4-3
  • Previous Rank: 16
  • Week 7: Win @ Jaguars, 20-7
  • Week 8: Thursday Night Football vs MIA

The Texans defense is finally starting to play up to its potential. Conversely, QB Deshaun Watson is very obviously playing hurt.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Power Ranking: 16

  • Record: 3-4
  • Previous Rank: 12
  • Week 7: Loss vs Texans, 20-7
  • Week 8: vs PHI (London)

QB Blake Bortles was benched in another ugly Jags’ loss. Surprisingly, he’s already been announced as the starter for this week’s game in London.

Washington Redskins

Power Ranking: 17

  • Record: 4-2
  • Previous Rank: 18
  • Week 7: Win vs Cowboys, 20-17
  • Week 8: @ NYG

The Redskins’ Week 7 win against Dallas was saved by the upright. They have a chance for another NFC East win this weekend in New York.

Seattle Seahawks

Power Ranking: 18

  • Record: 3-3
  • Previous Rank: 17
  • Week 7: Bye
  • Week 8: @ DET

Surprisingly, Seattle’s resurgent rushing attack — not franchise QB Russell Wilson — has pushed the team back toward playoff contention.

Tennessee Titans

Power Ranking: 19

  • Record: 3-4
  • Previous Rank: 19
  • Week 7: Loss @ Chargers, 20-19
  • Week 8: Bye

The Titans nearly pulled off an exciting comeback win in London, but lost when head coach Mike Vrabel decided to go for two and the win instead of kicking the game-tying extra point at the end of regulation. They’ll have an extra week to prepare for the Cowboys.

Detroit Lions

Power Ranking: 20

  • Record: 3-3
  • Previous Rank: 23
  • Week 7: Win @ Dolphins, 32-21
  • Week 8: vs SEA

The Lions are starting to look like a complete team. A win over Seattle this week would give them a winning record for the first time this season.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Power Ranking: 21

  • Record: 3-3
  • Previous Rank: 21
  • Week 7: Win vs Browns, 26-23
  • Week 8: @ CIN

The Bucs blew a fourth quarter lead but eventually won a game that seemed destined to end in a tie. The loss of LB Kwon Alexander hurts an already poor defense.

Denver Broncos

Power Ranking: 22

  • Record: 3-4
  • Previous Rank: 22
  • Week 7: Win @ Cardinals, 45-10
  • Week 8: @ KC

Thursday Night Football was the Emmanuel Sanders Show on offense and a throwback performance by the Broncos defense. It’s safe not to expect the same result in Arrowhead.

Cleveland Browns

Power Ranking: 23

  • Record: 2-4-1
  • Previous Rank: 20
  • Week 7: Loss @ Buccaneers, 26-23
  • Week 8: @ PIT

Another week, another overtime game for the Browns. Is Hue Jackson part of the problem or part of the solution?

Indianapolis Colts

Power Ranking: 24

  • Record: 2-5
  • Previous Rank: 24
  • Week 7: Win vs Bills, 37-5
  • Week 8: @ OAK

Andrew Luck and the Colts will look to continue their not-dead-yet tour this weekend against the dumpster-fire Raiders.

Dallas Cowboys

Power Ranking: 25

  • Record: 3-4
  • Previous Rank: 26
  • Week 7: Loss @ Redskins, 20-17
  • Week 8: Bye

Dallas followed their frustrating Week 7 loss by trading (overpaying?) for a potential go-to WR for Dak Prescott. Perhaps they shouldn’t have waited until mid-season to address their receiving corps?

Miami Dolphins

Power Ranking: 26

  • Record: 4-3
  • Previous Rank: 25
  • Week 7: Loss vs Lions, 32-21
  • Week 8: Thursday Night Football @ HOU

Besides getting thoroughly outplayed in their Week 7 loss, the Dolphins also lost emerging playmaker Albert Wilson to a potentially serious injury.

New York Jets

Power Ranking: 27

  • Record: 3-4
  • Previous Rank: 27
  • Week 7: Loss vs Vikings, 37-17
  • Week 8: @ CHI

The Jets played the Vikings much tougher than the final score indicated, but it was another rough outing for rookie QB Sam Darnold.

San Francisco 49ers

Power Ranking: 28

  • Record: 1-5
  • Previous Rank: 28
  • Week 7: Bye
  • Week 8: @ ARI

If they play like they did in Week 6, the 49ers have a shot at their second win this week in Arizona.

Buffalo Bills

Power Ranking: 29

  • Record: 2-5
  • Previous Rank: 29
  • Week 7: Loss @ Colts, 37-5
  • Week 8: Monday Night Football vs NE

The Bills offense is a mess, and somehow even more so without rookie QB Josh Allen.

New York Giants

Power Ranking: 30

  • Record: 1-6
  • Previous Rank: 30
  • Week 7: Loss @ Falcons, 23-20
  • Week 8: vs WAS

The Giants seemingly find new lows to hit on a weekly basis. This week, there were several strange calls by head coach Pat Shurmur and one of the most pathetic onside kick attempts in recent memory.

Oakland Raiders

Power Ranking: 31

  • Record: 1-5
  • Previous Rank: 32
  • Week 7: Bye
  • Week 8: vs IND

Even during the Raiders’ bye week, they found a way to divide their fanbase when they traded WR Amari Cooper to Dallas for a 1st Round pick. They do, however, now have three 2019 1st Round picks.

Arizona Cardinals

Power Ranking: 32

  • Record: 1-6
  • Previous Rank: 31
  • Week 7: Loss @ Broncos, 45-10
  • Week 8: vs SF

QB Josh Rosen made some costly rookie mistakes on Thursday night in a blowout loss, and now the team’s best defensive player is requesting a trade. Everything is fine in Arizona.
