NFL Power Rankings Week 14

As you might have guessed, the top two teams traded places this week. But in fact, none of the top teams look unbeatable.

The Saints, who overmatched the Rams a few weeks ago, only scored 10 points in a strange Week 13 loss. The Chiefs’ star running back is no longer a Chief. The Chargers needed a miracle comeback (and arguably some help) to pull out their last-minute road win against the Steelers, who may be without James Conner for a few weeks.

Are things falling into place for the Patriots or Texans in the AFC?

As always, these rankings loosely reflect my current Super Bowl odds.

Los Angeles Rams

Power Ranking: 1

  • Record: 11-1
  • Previous Rank: 2
  • Week 13: Win @ Lions, 30-16
  • Week 14: @ CHI

The Rams have regained the #1 seed in the NFC, but can only afford to lose as many games as the Saints do the rest of the way if they want to keep it, as they’d lose the head-to-head tiebreaker.

New Orleans Saints

Power Ranking: 2

  • Record: 10-2
  • Previous Rank: 1
  • Week 13: Loss @ Cowboys, 13-10
  • Week 14: @ TB

Was their loss in Dallas just a trap game, or did the Cowboys give the rest of the NFC the blueprint for beating the Saints?

Kansas City Chiefs

Power Ranking: 3

  • Record: 10-2
  • Previous Rank: 3
  • Week 13: Win @ Raiders, 40-33
  • Week 14: vs BAL

The Chiefs only scored 40 points in their first game without Kareem Hunt. Their matchup with an excellent Ravens defense this week will be interesting to watch.

Los Angeles Chargers

Power Ranking: 4

  • Record: 9-3
  • Previous Rank: 4
  • Week 13: Win @ Steelers, 33-30
  • Week 14: vs CIN

An exciting SNF win in Pittsburgh was really a tale of two halves, which left me wondering who the real Chargers are: the team who was dominated for the first 30 minutes, or the one who, led by their future-HOF quarterback, overcame a 16-point deficit in a hostile environment? I suspect it’s somewhere in between.

New England Patriots

Power Ranking: 5

  • Record: 9-3
  • Previous Rank: 6
  • Week 13: Win vs Vikings, 24-10
  • Week 14: @ MIA

With only one game remaining against a winning team (Week 15 @ PIT), the Patriots seem like a lock for 12 wins and a bye week.

Houston Texans

Power Ranking: 6

  • Record: 9-3
  • Previous Rank: 8
  • Week 13: Win vs Browns, 29-13
  • Week 14: vs IND

FiveThirtyEight says Houston only has a 29% chance at a first-round bye, but their remaining schedule is quite favorable, and the Chiefs could still slip up with games left against the Ravens, Chargers, and Seahawks.

Chicago Bears

Power Ranking: 7

  • Record: 8-4
  • Previous Rank: 5
  • Week 13: Loss @ Giants, 30-27
  • Week 14: Sunday Night Football vs LAR

It only took career backup Chase Daniel 2 starts to cost the Bears a game against an inferior opponent. You can bet that Mitchell Trubisky will return for the showdown in L.A. on SNF.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Power Ranking: 8

  • Record: 7-4-1
  • Previous Rank: 7
  • Week 13: Loss vs Chargers, 33-30
  • Week 14: @ OAK

Though the Steelers again found ways to beat themselves in Week 13, the officiating certainly played a role in the outcome.

Seattle Seahawks

Power Ranking: 9

  • Record: 7-5
  • Previous Rank: 10
  • Week 13: Win vs 49ers, 43-16
  • Week 14: Monday Night Football vs MIN

The Seahawks continue to roll toward the playoffs, but will host a desperate Minnesota team on Monday night.

Dallas Cowboys

Power Ranking: 10

  • Record: 7-5
  • Previous Rank: 14
  • Week 13: Win vs Saints, 13-10
  • Week 14: vs PHI

The Cowboys defense was excellent in their surprising defeat of the Saints on TNF. They now host the Eagles in a Week 14 game with monumental NFC East implications.

Baltimore Ravens

Power Ranking: 11

  • Record: 7-5
  • Previous Rank: 13
  • Week 13: Win @ Falcons, 26-16
  • Week 14: @ KC

Rookie Lamar Jackson has the Ravens on a roll, and only half a game out of the AFC North division lead.

Indianapolis Colts

Power Ranking: 12

  • Record: 6-6
  • Previous Rank: 11
  • Week 13: Loss @ Jaguars, 6-0
  • Week 14: @ HOU

Not only was the Colts’ unexpected loss in Jacksonville one of the most boring, low-scoring games in recent memory, it also severely impacted their playoff hopes. Their odds to make the playoffs dropped from 30% to 10%, per FiveThirtyEight.

Minnesota Vikings

Power Ranking: 13

  • Record: 6-5-1
  • Previous Rank: 9
  • Week 13: Loss @ Patriots, 24-10
  • Week 14: Monday Night Football @ SEA

So much for the Vikings being built to beat the Patriots. Their season is hanging by a thread, and a daunting MNF game at CenturyLink Field probably needs to be the start of a winning streak if Minnesota wants to make the playoffs.

Philadelphia Eagles

Power Ranking: 14

  • Record: 6-6
  • Previous Rank: 15
  • Week 13: Win vs Redskins, 28-13
  • Week 14: @ DAL

Are the Eagles merely salvaging a respectable finish to their 2018 season, or building toward a potential playoff run? Sunday’s NFC East showdown may answer that question.

Carolina Panthers

Power Ranking: 15

  • Record: 6-6
  • Previous Rank: 12
  • Week 13: Loss @ Buccaneers, 24-17
  • Week 14: @ CLE

Cam Newton may actually have to turn into Superman to get Carolina into the playoffs.

Tennessee Titans

Power Ranking: 16

  • Record: 6-6
  • Previous Rank: 17
  • Week 13: Win vs Jets, 26-22
  • Week 14: vs JAC

With a win on Sunday against the Jags, Tennessee’s playoff chances would increase to 27%.

Denver Broncos

Power Ranking: 17

  • Record: 6-6
  • Previous Rank: 16
  • Week 13: Win @ Bengals, 24-10
  • Week 14: @ SF

The Broncos still had justifiable optimism about making the playoff’s after Sunday’s win in Cincinnati. After Wednesday’s practice, that optimism has to be fading fast.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Power Ranking: 18

  • Record: 5-7
  • Previous Rank: 23
  • Week 13: Win vs Panthers, 24-17
  • Week 14: vs NO

Despite a turbulent season, the Bucs could still finish at 8-8 or better…though 7-9 seems more likely.

Miami Dolphins

Power Ranking: 19

  • Record: 6-6
  • Previous Rank: 25
  • Week 13: Win vs Bills, 21-17
  • Week 14: vs NE

The Dolphins simply refuse to veer too far from .500, which is probably where they’ll finish.

Green Bay Packers

Power Ranking: 20

  • Record: 4-7-1
  • Previous Rank: 18
  • Week 13: Loss vs Cardinals, 20-17
  • Week 14: vs ATL

Mike McCarthy won a Super Bowl as the Packers’ head coach, but now he’s out of a job.

Atlanta Falcons

Power Ranking: 21

  • Record: 4-8
  • Previous Rank: 19
  • Week 13: Loss vs Ravens, 26-16
  • Week 14: @ GB

The Falcons won’t make the playoffs this season, but with better health, this team could really make some noise in 2019.

Cleveland Browns

Power Ranking: 22

  • Record: 4-7-1
  • Previous Rank: 20
  • Week 13: Loss @ Texans, 29-13
  • Week 14: vs CAR

The Browns won’t make the playoffs this season, but they’ll be a good team sooner rather than later.

Detroit Lions

Power Ranking: 23

  • Record: 4-8
  • Previous Rank: 22
  • Week 13: Loss vs Rams, 30-16
  • Week 14: @ ARI

Under first-year coach Matt Patricia, the Lions seem to have found more questions than answers.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Power Ranking: 24

  • Record: 4-8
  • Previous Rank: 26
  • Week 13: Win vs Colts, 6-0
  • Week 14: Thursday Night Football @ TEN

The 2018 Jaguars still stink, but they stunk a lot less against the Colts on Sunday, when their defense flashed its great potential.

Washington Redskins

Power Ranking: 25

  • Record: 6-6
  • Previous Rank: 21
  • Week 13: Loss @ Eagles, 28-13
  • Week 14: vs NYG

The Redskins are now down to Mark Sanchez at quarterback. At least he has a good sense of humor about the Butt Fumble.

P.S. Did you know the Butt Fumble has its own Wikipedia entry? What a time to be alive.

New York Giants

Power Ranking: 26

  • Record: 4-8
  • Previous Rank: 27
  • Week 13: Win vs Bears, 30-27
  • Week 14: @ WAS

Let it never be said that Eli Manning has lost his sense of humor.

Cincinnati Bengals

Power Ranking: 27

  • Record: 5-7
  • Previous Rank: 24
  • Week 13: Loss vs Broncos, 24-10
  • Week 14: @ LAC

With QB Andy Dalton and now WR A.J. Green on IR, the rest of a once-promising season isn’t much more than a formality for the Bengals.

Buffalo Bills

Power Ranking: 28

  • Record: 4-8
  • Previous Rank: 28
  • Week 13: Loss @ Dolphins, 21-17
  • Week 14: vs NYJ

Last week, QB Josh Allen had more rushing yards than the league’s marquee running backs, and the Bills release presumed #1 WR Kelvin Benjamin. Even in Week 14, the Buffalo Bills are full of surprises.

New York Jets

Power Ranking: 29

  • Record: 3-9
  • Previous Rank: 29
  • Week 13: Loss @ Titans, 26-22
  • Week 14: @ BUF

The Jets-Bills game this week will be the first Sam Darnold versus Josh Allen matchup, setting the stage for a rivalry that both teams hope lasts a long time.

Arizona Cardinals

Power Ranking: 30

  • Record: 3-9
  • Previous Rank: 32
  • Week 13: Win @ Packers, 20-17
  • Week 14: vs DET

Fun fact: WR Larry Fitzgerald has more career tackles (37) than dropped passes (29). He’s also one of the nicest guys in the league.

Oakland Raiders

Power Ranking: 31

  • Record: 2-10
  • Previous Rank: 31
  • Week 13: Loss vs Chiefs, 40-33
  • Week 14: vs PIT

The Raiders played the Chiefs very tough in Week 13. Despite the double-digit point spread, the Week 14 matchup is unlikely to be a cakewalk for the Steelers, who have struggled in their last few trips to Oakland.

San Francisco 49ers

Power Ranking: 32

  • Record: 2-10
  • Previous Rank: 30
  • Week 13: Loss @ Seahawks, 43-16
  • Week 14: vs DEN

Despite this ranking, the 49ers will have enough draft capital and key players returning from injury to improve dramatically in 2019.
