NFL Power Rankings Week 14

We finally have some movement among the top end teams this week as a couple in the top 10 lost and for the first time in a long time, there is a new king of the mountain. There are some really good games to look forward to this week and playoff pictures are starting to get pretty clear. The week ended on a bit of a down note as the Bengals and Steelers continued their cheap shotting of the other team. These games continue to be the worst on the schedule because of the danger it presents to the players. There was still a lot of great football this week so let’s jump into week 14’s NFL Power Rankings.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Power Ranking: 1

  • Record: 10-2
  • Previous Rank: 2
  • Week 13 result: Win versus Cincinnati Bengals, 23-20
  • Week 14: versus Baltimore Ravens

This game was ugly, there’s just no way around it. Dirty hits were everywhere and there is serious concern about the health of linebacker Ryan Shazier. He made a tackle and dropped to the ground and was put on a backboard and carted into an ambulance to the hospital. There is not much know as of this writing about his condition, but hopefully, it works out for the best. There’s also a lot of conversation on the block rookie Juju Smith-Schuster laid on linebacker Vontaze Burfict. Anyone who says it wasn’t a dirty hit is wearing Steelers tinted glasses. On the scoreboard, Pittsburgh charged back to erase a 17 point deficit to win the game. Given the concern for their teammate and the circus that followed, this was an unreal effort. Pittsburgh now gets a short week to face Baltimore on Sunday night.

Minnesota Vikings

Power Ranking: 2

  • Record: 10-2
  • Previous Rank: 3
  • Week 13 result: Win versus Atlanta Falcons, 14-9
  • Week 14: at Carolina Panthers

The Minnesota Vikings might just be the team to beat in the NFC. I’m still trying to wrap my head around saying that with Case Keenum being their quarterback, but he’s playing well. Even in games where he’s not really above average, the offense has enough weapons to make things work. They also have one of the nastiest defenses in the league, which can carry them in any given game. There’s always a little hesitation in getting behind a team when it feels like the QB situation could potentially come back to bite them at the worst moment, but here we are. Teams aren’t going to want to go into Minnesota in the playoffs to try and beat the Vikings. As it stands right now, they are the number one seed in the NFC.

Philadelphia Eagles

Power Ranking: 3

  • Record: 10-2
  • Previous Rank: 1
  • Week 13 result: Loss versus Seattle Seahawks, 24-10
  • Week 14: at Los Angeles Rams

For basically the first time all season, the Eagles got smacked right in the mouth. They’re not the first or last team to suffer that fate against the Seahawks, although it was surprising that the Seattle defense played so well with their injuries. Philly and their offensive line really scuffled when Seattle ran a defensive line stunt. They gave up a quarterback pressure on 16 of the 17 stunts Seattle ran. Carson Wentz passed for over 300 yards, but that seemed hollow on a night when the offense didn’t do much. He did make a few spectacular throws that only a handful of quarterbacks could make. The running game was out of the equation almost right off the bat. This could serve as a wake-up call for Philadelphia or could be some cracks in the armor. We’ll get a better idea when they play the Rams this week. It’s also a smart move by Doug Peterson to stay out West.

New England Patriots

Power Ranking: 4

  • Record: 10-2
  • Previous Rank: 4
  • Week 13 result: Win versus Buffalo Bills, 23-3
  • Week 14: at Miami Dolphins

It’s just another week of smacking around a division rival for the Patriots. It seems strange, but there isn’t a lot to talk about here. The Pats do what they do and are in cruise control. Quarterback Tom Brady didn’t put up any crazy stats but he also wasn’t needed in this game. As a couple quick asides, it’s funny how he Brady can scream at coaches and be a competitor but if Odell Beckham or Dez Bryant did it, they’d get demolished in the press. Also, it was good to see the NFL suspend tight end Rob Gronkowski for his garbage hit on Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White. He gave another player a concussion with a dirty hit. If not for the display the Bengals and Steelers put out there, it would have been the worst incident of the week. Kudos to Coach Bill Belichick for apologizing to Bills Coach Sean McDermott. There’s no place for those type of shots in the NFL.

Los Angeles Rams

Power Ranking: 5

  • Record: 9-3
  • Previous Rank: 5
  • Week 13 result: Win versus Arizona Cardinals, 32-16
  • Week 14: versus Philadelphia Eagles

As Jeff Fisher continues to stew about how he could’ve led the Rams to these type of results, quarterback Jared Goff and Coach Sean McVay continue to smash all expectations. Goff looks like a totally different quarterback than last season and running back Todd Gurley shows he’s one of the more well-rounded backs in the league. The Cardinals were outmatched early and often in this game. What could be a very important development, defensive coordinator Wade Phillips seems like he’s figuring out his personnel. If the defense can routinely hold their opponents to around 20-24 points, the Rams will continue to win a lot of games. A very interesting matchup is on the docket with Philadelphia this week.

New Orleans Saints

Power Ranking: 6

  • Record: 9-3
  • Previous Rank: 6
  • Week 13 result: Win versus Carolina Panthers, 31-21
  • Week 14: at Atlanta Falcons, Thursday night

Alvin KamaraThe final score of this game makes it look closer than it was, but New Orleans had control of this game for a significant chunk. The defense played well and that came without star cornerback Marshon Lattimore, who was held out with an injury. It’s unclear if he’ll make it back for the Thursday night showdown in Atlanta. New Orleans just keeps on smashing teams with the combo of Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara and could really seize control of the NFC South with a victory versus the Falcons. They have beaten the Panthers twice to hold a one-game lead and the tiebreaker. The Saints are close to a complete team and represent a real threat in the NFC.

Seattle Seahawks

Power Ranking: 7

  • Record: 8-4
  • Previous Rank: 7
  • Week 13 result: Win versus Philadelphia Eagles, 24-10
  • Week 14: at Jacksonville Jaguars

I really wanted to move the Seahawks up, but every team in front of them with the exception of the Eagles won again. Full credit to Seattle for taking it to the Philadelphia offense. They really applied a ton of pressure on Carson Wentz and forced a key turnover as Wentz dove for a touchdown. I’m fully on board with the idea that quarterback Russell Wilson should be the MVP this season. The fact this offense moves the ball at all is almost entirely on his shoulders. This is going to come back and haunt them at some point. The offense can’t survive with Wilson running around until someone breaks open or they draw a flag. A very interesting matchup with the Jaguars is up next in Jacksonville.

Los Angeles Chargers

Power Ranking: 8

  • Record: 6-6
  • Previous Rank: 10
  • Week 13 result: Win versus Cleveland Browns, 19-10
  • Week 14: versus Washington Redskins

The Chargers are playing some good football right now. Maybe the score wasn’t as wide as some thought, but Cleveland is trying to not go 0-16. Every time out is their Super Bowl. It makes a lot of sense the offense is playing well when wide receiver Keenan Allen is at the center of it. He went through a spurt where he wasn’t seeing more than 5-7 targets a game. The past three games, he’s totaled over 30 receptions, 400 yards and scored four touchdowns. That’s also part of the reason quarterback Philip Rivers is red hot as well. The defense can get after any opposing quarterback and they’re now in a position to take the AFC West. They draw a beat up Redskins team that is traveling cross-country this week.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Power Ranking: 9

  • Record: 8-4
  • Previous Rank: 11
  • Week 13 result: Win versus Indianapolis Colts, 30-10
  • Week 14: versus Seattle Seahawks

Jacksonville beat up on division rival Colts for the second time in the past month. What has been impressive is that quarterback Blake Bortles has actually played slightly above average lately. That’s not super high praise and may not sound like a good thing, but the running game has struggled a little bit recently. Jacksonville is still winning because of the defense and Bortles. The group of Marqise Lee, Keelan Cole, and now Dede Westbrook have stepped up in the season-long absence of Allen Robinson. They could still beat any team in the AFC and are on track to make the playoffs. Jacksonville could be a tough out if their defense plays well. We’ll get to learn more about them when they host Seattle this week.

Tennessee Titans

Power Ranking: 10

  • Record: 8-4
  • Previous Rank: 12
  • Week 13 result: Win versus Houston Texans, 24-13
  • Week 14: at Arizona Cardinals

As much as I want to believe in an 8-4 team that I loved all offseason, the Titans feel like one of the biggest frauds in the AFC outside of the West division. The running game needs to give the boot to DeMarco Murray, quarterback Marcus Mariota has regressed and his receivers have really struggled as well. Rookie Corey Davis has had a difficult adjustment to the NFL so far and the only reliable option has been old man Delanie Walker. They barely beat a Texan team that is ravaged by injuries and let Tom Savage throw the ball almost 50 times. Derrick Henry salted the game away in garbage time on a 75-yard touchdown run to make the score look worse. Tennessee actually has a negative point differential so far and it feels like even if they make the postseason, they’ll be a quick out. They travel to Arizona this week.

Carolina Panthers

Power Ranking: 11

  • Record: 8-4
  • Previous Rank: 9
  • Week 13 result: Loss versus New Orleans Saints, 31-21
  • Week 14: versus Minnesota Vikings

Carolina joined the number of teams this season that have been slapped by the Saints. The problem for them is they’re now a game behind the Saints and have lost both head to head matchups. With only four games left, it seems like Wild Card or bust for the Panthers. They have to prioritize some type of explosiveness on the perimeter this offseason. Even with quarterback Cam Newtons unique skill set, the offense can be easy to guard. Receiver Devin Funchess has really surprised this year but it seems to be a lot to ask for him to be a number one option. Wouldn’t it be fun to see running back Christian McCaffrey in the Saints offense? Alvin Kamara(deservedly) is getting all the buzz, but it would be interesting to see them switch spots. The road gets even harder for the Panthers this week when they host the Vikings.

Atlanta Falcons

Power Ranking: 12

  • Record: 7-5
  • Previous Rank: 8
  • Week 13 result: Loss versus Minnesota Vikings, 14-9
  • Week 14: versus New Orleans Saints, Thursday night

I’m not going to crush the Falcons for losing to the Vikings, especially since the score was close. However, Atlanta is also on the outside looking in as far as the postseason goes right now. It goes to show just how stacked the NFC appears this season. Running back Devonta Freeman came back into the lineup and played well. Quarterback Matt Ryan was under siege through a lot of the game. Receiver Julio Jones didn’t show up on the stat line but he actually had some space against cornerback Xavier Rhodes on some plays. He just didn’t get the ball. The defense played extremely well as the Viking offense was on fire coming into this game. A critical Thursday night showdown with the Saints is up next.

Baltimore Ravens

Power Ranking: 13

  • Record: 7-5
  • Previous Rank: 16
  • Week 13 result: Win versus Detroit Lions, 44-20
  • Week 14: at Pittsburgh Steelers

Speaking of fraudulent AFC teams, we come to Baltimore. The score is another very misleading one as the game was close until the fourth quarter. Baltimore got a key turnover and just kept scoring as the floodgates opened up. The defense could be dealt a big blow if cornerback Jimmy Smith is lost for the season. He suffered a non-contact injury and could not put any pressure on his leg when he left the field. Seeing as how the offense is scattershot at best, the defense needs to continue to be the engine on this team. The Ravens could sneak in as a six seed and potentially win against the AFC South champion. It’s not likely and even if they pull off the upset, they’d draw New England or Pittsburgh the next round. They actually draw the Steelers next Sunday night in Pittsburgh.

Dallas Cowboys

Power Ranking: 14

  • Record: 6-6
  • Previous Rank: 19
  • Week 13 result: Win versus Washington Redskins, 38-17
  • Week 14: at New York Giants

This was possibly the biggest and most improbable win of the season for Dallas. Most expected Washington to be able to handle their business seeing as how Dallas had been struggling to put points on the board. They flipped the script on the Redskins and put up a whopping 38 points. Running back Alfred Morris continued to run well and smoked his former team for 100+ yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Dak Prescott suffered a hand injury but played through it. Even receiver Dez Bryant got into the act this week for once. The Dallas defense feasted on the Washington offensive line and got after Kirk Cousins all night long. The Cowboys kept faint hopes alive for a playoff berth and face a Giants team that is in utter disarray.

Buffalo Bills

Power Ranking: 15

  • Record: 6-6
  • Previous Rank: 14
  • Week 13 result: Loss versus New England Patriots, 23-3
  • Week 14: versus Indianapolis Colts

Let’s be honest, we all knew the Bills didn’t have the weapons to hang with the Patriots over the course of a full game. The defense actually played pretty well, keeping Tom Brady uncomfortable. Holding New England under 25 points means you should have a chance…unless you’re the Bills. The pop-gun offense couldn’t put any points on the board against an improved Patriots defense. Quarterback Tyrod Taylor suffered a knee injury and had to be carted off. It would be less than ideal for next week if Buffalo had to play Nathan Peterman at quarterback again. They do still have a chance to sneak into the playoffs in the AFC, but it’s likely they continue to rebuild this team in the offseason.

New York Jets

Power Ranking: 16

  • Record: 5-7
  • Previous Rank: 20
  • Week 13 result: Win versus Kansas City Chiefs, 38-31
  • Week 14: at Denver Broncos

The New York Jets are just one game under .500 and that might be the craziest sentence I type this whole article. Not only does Coach Todd Bowles deserve a ton of credit for steering this team that was supposed to contend for the number one overall pick, how about coordinator John Morton? He’s taken quarterback Josh McCown and receiver Robby Anderson and Jermaine Kearse and fashioned an above average passing attack. They kicked the Chiefs when they were down this week and the season has exceeded expectations in almost every single way. They still will need to upgrade the roster in a major way this offseason but the coaching staff has earned the right to stick around and see the rebuild all the way through. The Jets travel to Denver this week.

Washington Redskins

Power Ranking: 17

  • Record: 5-7
  • Previous Rank: 13
  • Week 13 result: Loss versus Dallas Cowboys, 38-17
  • Week 14: at Los Angeles Chargers
Fantasy Football T-Shirts
The Redskins offense is basically in shambles right now due to injuries. Samaje Perine is one of the only running backs left healthy, and even he’s been banged up frequently. The offensive line has been battered and the only receivers they have left are Jamison Crowder and Josh Doctson. The usage of Doctson is puzzling. Washington only seems to want to target him deep, but it’s hard to do that with the offensive line being so injured. It’s rare to see him get targeted on just a slant or comeback route. The defense has been giving up a ton of points and it seems like it might be a lost season. The worst part will be if quarterback Kirk Cousins leaves. Washington has no apparent solution if he does. The Redskins head to Los Angeles to play the Chargers this week.

Cincinnati Bengals

Power Ranking: 18

  • Record: 5-7
  • Previous Rank: 17
  • Week 13 result: Loss versus Pittsburgh Steelers, 23-20
  • Week 14: versus Chicago Bears

There’s going to be a lot of outcry about Vontaze Burfict getting decleated on a dirty block from Steelers receiver Juju Smith-Schuster. There is no place for those type of hits(or the taunting that happened after), but those same folks chirping Juju should have the same venom towards safety George Iloka for laying another headshot on Antonio Brown on the game-tying touchdown. Both plays were dangerous and unacceptable. These two teams have to find a way to play hard without the dirty play that goes along with almost every game. A player is going to get severely hurt at this rate. It’s not why we watch football. Cincinnati blew a 17 point lead in this game and they continue to just have their hearts ripped out by Pittsburgh. They had over 170 yards in penalties and don’t have to look much further than that as to why they lost. Coach Marvin Lewis absolutely has to be gone after this season.

Oakland Raiders

Power Ranking: 19

  • Record: 6-6
  • Previous Rank: 21
  • Week 13 result: Win versus New York Giants, 24-17
  • Week 14: at Kansas City

Oakland rode out a victory on the back of running back Marshawn Lynch and this game is the definition of winning ugly. In fairness, the Raiders were without receivers, Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper. That’s going to hurt any offense but it’s still hard to take this team as a serious threat to the AFC West, even though they are tied record-wise. The defense can’t make enough plays versus a good offense. This Derek Carr-led offense is just so average and there’s no real explanation for that. They have a what should be a good offensive line, good receivers on paper and a nice group of running backs. They need to raise their level of play headed into Arrowhead Stadium this week for a showdown with the Chiefs.

Detroit Lions

Power Ranking: 20

  • Record: 6-6
  • Previous Rank: 15
  • Week 13 result: Loss versus Baltimore Ravens, 44-20
  • Week 14: at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The final score looks terrible but the Lions made this a game in the third quarter. It just got out of hand late. What faint hopes remain for the playoffs hinges on how serious an injury quarterback Matthew Stafford suffered to his throwing hand. It didn’t look good and if he can’t play, it’s all over in Detroit. Given how tight the playoff race is in the NFC, Detroit likely would have to win out to sneak in. They start on that path in Tampa Bay this week.

Kansas City Chiefs

Power Ranking: 21

  • Record: 6-6
  • Previous Rank: 18
  • Week 13 result: Loss versus New York Jets, 38-31
  • Week 14: versus Oakland Raiders

This could potentially be rock bottom for the Chiefs but I’ve also said that before. The offense finally woke up as quarterback Alex Smith threw for over 350 yards and four touchdowns. Kareem Hunt was left out in the cold yet again but Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce both had big days. The defense bears a big portion of the latest loss as the Jets hung almost 40 points on them. It culminated with a total meltdown from cornerback Marcus Peters. Not only did he throw a penalty flag into the stands, he then decided to leave the field. The Chiefs are in danger of blowing a 5-0 start to the season and missing the playoffs altogether. A huge game looms this week against the Oakland Raiders.

Green Bay Packers

Power Ranking: 22

  • Record: 6-6
  • Previous Rank: 26
  • Week 13 result: Win versus Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 26-20 in OT
  • Week 14: at Cleveland Browns

The Packers kept their postseason hopes alive after a walk-off victory against the Bucs. It’s hard to get a bead on quarterback Brett Hundley. He torched the Steelers defense in Pittsburgh but couldn’t crack 100 yards at home against a terrible defense. Jamaal Williams was the spark that made the offense go and the Packers need to beat the Browns this week. If they do, quarterback Aaron Rodgers is waiting in the wings to make his return and we all know he can cover a lot of weaknesses in a football team.

[ari] Arizona Cardinals

Power Ranking: 23

  • Record: 5-7
  • Previous Rank: 23
  • Week 13 result: Loss versus Los Angeles Rams, 32-16
  • Week 14: versus Tennessee Titans

Arizona has to be sick of playing the Rams this season. In their two games, the Rams outscored them 65-16. The Cardinals are just playing out the string and Larry Fitzgerald just keeps building on that Hall of Fame resume. He’s now fourth in receiving yards all time and also about the only reason to turn on the Cardinals right now. This team is another that could make a fast turnaround if they have quarterback Carson Palmer and running back David Johnson back at full health next season. For now, they get the Tennessee Titans this week.

Houston Texans

Power Ranking: 24

  • Record: 4-8
  • Previous Rank: 22
  • Week 13 result: Loss versus Tennessee Titans, 24-13
  • Week 14: versus San Francisco 49ers

For the life of me, I can’t understand why the Texans had Tom Savage throw almost 50 passes in a game that wasn’t out of hand until the very end. There just has to be a better way. Houston lacked weapons in the passing game coming into the contest and then lost Braxton Miller and C.J. Fiedorowicz to injury during the game. Injuries have derailed a promising season and they’ll continue to play out the string against the 49ers this week.

Chicago Bears

Power Ranking: 25

  • Record: 3-9
  • Previous Rank: 24
  • Week 13 result: Loss versus San Francisco 49ers, 15-14
  • Week 14: at Cincinnati Bengals

It’s hard to lose a game when the other team doesn’t score a touchdown, but that is exactly what the Bears pulled off on Sunday. The only highlight came on a fantastic punt return from rookie Tarik Cohen. He should be seeing plenty of work in this offense but they can’t figure out a way to involve him. Coach John Fox should not be long for this job when the season is over. The offense has some work to do, but there is potential for a reload here in a short time.

Indianapolis Colts

Power Ranking: 26

  • Record: 3-9
  • Previous Rank: 25
  • Week 13 result: Loss versus Jacksonville Jaguars, 30-10
  • Week 14: at Buffalo Bills

The Colts got rolled over again by the Jaguars and the only highlight was a long T.Y. Hilton touchdown. How Chuck Pagano is still the coach here is beyond anyone’s knowledge. The fate of this whole team rests on the surgically repaired shoulder of quarterback Andrew Luck. If he’s healthy, they have a chance. If not, this team likely should be blown up in totality. The Colts draw the Bills this week.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Power Ranking: 27

  • Record: 4-8
  • Previous Rank: 27
  • Week 13 result: Loss versus Green Bay Packers, 26-20 in OT
  • Week 14: versus Detroit Lions

Jameis WinstonCan we talk about Jameis Winston being almost as bad as Blake Bortles? It seems odd to me that Bortles gets dragged constantly for terrible play and turning the ball over constantly but Winston gets a pass in a lot of circles. He’s thought of as this up and coming QB, but he is a turnover machine. That’s not to say he can’t improve, but we do have almost a three-year sample size of him being terrible protecting the football. He has 53 turnovers to this point in his career. That’s just not acceptable. Also, any coaching staff that can’t figure out how to get Mike Evans the ball shouldn’t be around. This Buccaneers offense is a mess and the defense isn’t much better. They’ll look to play spoiler against Detroit this week.

San Francisco 49ers

Power Ranking: 28

  • Record: 2-10
  • Previous Rank: 30
  • Week 13 result: Win versus Chicago Bears, 15-14
  • Week 14: at Houston Texans

It’s only one full week and three plays from last week, but there is a reason to believe that the 49ers made a really smart trade for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. The stats won’t impress anyone but Jimmy G has only been there for a few weeks. He looked poised and mostly comfortable while making receivers Marquise Goodwin and Trent Taylor look good. Even though they didn’t score a touchdown, San Francisco fans should still be pretty happy with only giving up a 2nd round pick (maybe) to find their franchise QB. Coach Kyle Shanahan and Jimmy G could make some noise by the bay in short fashion.

Miami Dolphins

Power Ranking: 29

  • Record: 5-7
  • Previous Rank: 31
  • Week 13 result: Win versus Denver Broncos, 35-9
  • Week 14: versus New England Patriots, Monday Night Football

Miami took Denver to the woodshed this week and that’s a terrible look for the Broncos. This Dolphins squad shouldn’t be smoking any team. It was made easier given the offensive incompetence from Denver and Miami had better enjoy the win. New England comes to town next and even without Rob Gronkowski, the Dolphins will have their hands full.

Denver Broncos

Power Ranking: 30

  • Record: 3-8
  • Previous Rank: 29
  • Week 13 result: Loss versus Miami Dolphins, 35-9
  • Week 14: versus New York Jets

The Broncos are just wishing they could hit fast forward to the end of the season. This one has been a nightmare and it may have hit bottom in Miami. It could be interesting to see what direction they head this offseason. A lot of the pieces from their Super Bowl title are still there. Could they make a run at either Kirk Cousins or Eli Manning if they’re available? It could transform this team quickly, although some offensive line upgrades wouldn’t hurt either. They face the surprising Jets team this week in Denver.

New York Giants

Power Ranking: 31

  • Record: 2-10
  • Previous Rank: 28
  • Week 13 result: Loss versus Oakland Raiders, 24-17
  • Week 14: versus Dallas Cowboys
Fantasy Football T-Shirts
What an absolute clown show this team has been the past week. Coach Ben McAdoo left franchise QB Eli Manning out to dry and benched him for Geno Smith…and then got fired, along with GM Jerry Reese. This organization is totally adrift right now and a reload is on the way. There are plenty of pieces there for the new regime to figure things out and the job is attractive. Any potential head coach and GM should be interested.

Cleveland Browns

Power Ranking: 32

  • Record: 0-12
  • Previous Rank: 32
  • Week 13 result: Loss versus Los Angeles Chargers, 19-10
  • Week 14: versus Green Bay Packers

The only big takeaway from this game is Josh Gordon is a freak of nature. For him to walk onto a football field after not playing for over 1,000 days and reach 85 yards receiving against corner Casey Hayward is wildly impressive. He is in a really good spot this week versus Green Bay. It could be one of Cleveland’s last chances to win a game this year.

  • Trust me, next week when the Patriots meet the Steelers, Tom Brady will methodically take apart the Pittsburg team like he always does. The game will not even be close or have any real dramatic moments. It will be just a another day at the office for the Brady Bunch.
