NFL Power Rankings Week 13

NFL Power RankingsThe regular season is nearing the end and this past week saw a few teams really put a stranglehold on their divisions. The Eagles, Steelers, Vikings, and Patriots all have almost insurmountable leads and are more focused on home field advantage and a coveted bye week. Other teams like the Saints, Falcons, Rams, Seahawks, Jaguars, and Titans all have a lot of work left to do if they want to take the division crown. The Chiefs are well on their way to choking away a 5-0 start to the season and the Chargers are looking to take advantage of their fall. With only a precious few weeks to go, let’s see how the ranks shake out this week.

Philadelphia Eagles

Power Ranking: 1

  • Record: 10-1
  • Previous Rank: 1
  • Week 12 result: Win versus Chicago Bears, 31-3
  • Week 13: at Seattle Seahawks

Carson Wentz 1The gap in talent between these two teams was evident right out of the gate. Philly was basically a python snake, squeezing the life out its prey. Both sides of the ball are loaded and the Eagles were able to do whatever they wanted to, led by quarterback Carson Wentz. The defensive line is likely the best in football and they key that side of the ball. LeGarrette Blount continues to keep Jay Ajayi at bay for the “lead back” role in the offense. It’s still mildly surprising that Philly isn’t using Ajayi very much considering they made a trade for him. Granted, it was only a fourth-round pick. Philly heads into Seattle next week to continue their march towards the number one seed in the NFC.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Power Ranking: 2

  • Record: 9-2
  • Previous Rank: 2
  • Week 12 result: Win versus Green Bay Packers, 31-28
  • Week 13: at Cincinnati Bengals, Monday Night Football

It was a very ugly win Sunday night for Pittsburgh but an ugly looking win beats an ugly looking loss. If anyone wants to know who the best receiver in the NFL is, pop in the game tape and watch Antonio Brown. Falcons wideout Julio Jones is more physically gifted, but there is no one who can match Brown. Running back Le’Veon Bell continues to churn out yardage even if the touchdowns haven’t followed. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has been much sharper in recent weeks but still has another level he can get to. The biggest issue is the defense. This unit carried the team through the first half but got ripped up by Brett Hundley. That’s not a good look for a team who wants to knock off the GOAT Tom Brady later this season, once in the regular season and possibly again in the playoffs. A tough divisional game on the road in Cincinnati looms on Monday Night.

Minnesota Vikings

Power Ranking: 3

  • Record: 9-2
  • Previous Rank: 4
  • Week 12 result: Win versus Detroit Lions, 30-23
  • Week 13: at Atlanta Falcons

Adam ThielenIt had taken a back seat to the Saints ripping off win after win coming into Week 12 but the Vikings have been just as impressive. I’m just as surprised as anyone that Case Keenum is leading a high powered offense and Latavius Murray is leading the way in the run game. Receiver Adam Thielen has had a meteoric rise to being one of the better and most consistent in the league. Stefon Diggs could explode at any time and the offense continues to be excellent. The defense is very good, even though they got torched by receiver Marvin Jones on Thanksgiving. That seems like a bump in the road, although a tough road test in Atlanta is up next. Win or lose next week, they are a legitimate threat to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

New England Patriots

Power Ranking: 4

  • Record: 9-2
  • Previous Rank: 5
  • Week 12 result: Win versus Miami Dolphins, 35-17
  • Week 13: at Buffalo Bills

The most predictable result of the week came when New England stomped out the Dolphins on Sunday. Quarterback Tom Brady did what he pleased, which included hitting tight end Rob Gronkowski for two touchdowns. The duo of Rex Burkhead and Dion Lewis out of the backfield was lethal on Sunday and they will likely continue that trend. The defense has been worlds better than the first half of the season. If both teams hold up their end of the bargain, the Patriots should roll into Heinz Field Week 15 and play for home field through the AFC playoffs. New England will continue their path next week in Buffalo.

Los Angeles Rams

Power Ranking: 5

  • Record: 8-3
  • Previous Rank: 7
  • Week 12 result: Win versus New Orleans Saints, 26-20
  • Week 13: at Arizona Cardinals
[the_ad id=”66786″]The Rams bounced back from a disappointing loss last week in Minnesota to stop the Saints win streak at eight. Quarterback Jared Goff was once again lights out, throwing for over 350 yards and two touchdowns. He was helped by the fact that the Saints defense was missing a lot of key players to injury, but Goff and Coach Sean McVay continue to be a dynamic duo. All the pieces of the offense chipped in as Sammy Watkins and Cooper Kupp did a lot of damage in the passing game and running back Todd Gurley kept the chains moving all day long. The Rams defense did get shredded by New Orleans running back Alvin Kamara, but that might just be par for the course for a lot of teams. The Rams should be able to win easily in Arizona next week, but divisional games are always a different animal.

New Orleans Saints

Power Ranking: 6

  • Record: 8-3
  • Previous Rank: 3
  • Week 12 result: Loss versus Los Angeles Rams, 26-20
  • Week 13: versus Carolina Panthers

Alvin KamaraThe Saints winning streak came to a halt in Los Angeles but perhaps the biggest story of the day was the play of rookie running back Alvin Kamara. The young gun looks to be the complete package and a seamless fit into the New Orleans offense. The Saints were behind on the scoreboard early and Kamara went through the Rams defense like a hot knife through soft butter. He racked up 188 yards of offense on just 11 touches. It might be time to get him more touches. It’s hard to judge the Saints on this loss because they were missing so many components of the defense. It would be a lot of fun to see this game again with both teams at full health. New Orleans will look to bounce back this week against Carolina.

Seattle Seahawks

Power Ranking: 7

  • Record: 7-4
  • Previous Rank: 8
  • Week 12 result: Win versus San Francisco 49ers, 24-13
  • Week 13: versus Philadelphia Eagles

Seattle remains very difficult to rank because their longevity in this spot is highly questionable. There is very literally almost nothing to this team past quarterback Russell Wilson. Receiver Doug Baldwin and tight end Jimmy Graham are good weapons but opposing defenses can really key in on them and limit their damage since they don’t fear a run game. On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Bobby Wagner remains one of the best in the league but will likely have a hard time dealing with better offenses. The fairest assessment of this team seems to be they can handle the bad teams like San Francisco but likely will fall short in the playoffs(if they get there). The best team in the NFL comes to call this week when Philadelphia comes into Seattle.

Atlanta Falcons

Power Ranking: 8

  • Record: 7-4
  • Previous Rank: 11
  • Week 12 result: Win versus Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 34-20
  • Week 13: versus Minnesota Vikings

Atlanta fans have been waiting all season for this kind of game from the offense and it finally happened as receiver Julio Jones went bonkers, accumulating over 250 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Quarterback Matt Ryan had on of his better games and Tevin Coleman once again filled in admirably for injured Devonta Freeman. They put up plenty of points but they still let the Bucs crawl back into this game. It has to be frustrating as Falcon fans to see this team not capitalize on putting teams away when they can. That’s not a good trait to have. The road to the postseason gets very difficult this week when the Minnesota Vikings come to Atlanta.

[the_ad id=”73965″][the_ad id=”63198″]

Carolina Panthers

Power Ranking: 9

  • Record: 8-3
  • Previous Rank: 9
  • Week 12 result: Win versus New York Jets, 35-27
  • Week 13: at New Orleans Saints

The Panthers didn’t move up even with a win because they spent a lot of this game playing with fire. Only a defensive score and a point return for a touchdown pulled this game out. The offense was mediocre and lost tight end, Greg Olsen, almost as soon as he came back when he re-aggravated his foot injury. Given the Panthers weapons and their total reliance on quarterback Cam Newton, it’s stunning to see running back Christian McCaffrey receiver nine touches in this game. Frankly, it’s just not enough for a running back who has been playing well and the team spent such a high pick on. Carolina will have to play much better this week in New Orleans to get a win.

Los Angeles Chargers

Power Ranking: 10

  • Record: 5-6
  • Previous Rank: 14
  • Week 12 result: Win versus Dallas Cowboys, 28-6
  • Week 13: versus Cleveland Browns

Melvin GordonDon’t look now, but the Chargers have gone 5-2 in their last seven games and suddenly look like a real threat to snag the AFC West crown and make the postseason. The talent has been there all along even when they had the horrible 0-4 start. Led by defensive stalwarts Joey Bosa, Melvin Ingram, and Casey Hayward, the Chargers are playing good football and they smacked the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving day. It’s not a coincidence the offense is performing better when they feed the ball to Keenan Allen. There shouldn’t be a game that he doesn’t see 10-12 targets. It will be interesting to see how the backfield shakes out. The Chargers need to continue to win and rookie Austin Ekeler had out-produced Melvin Gordon on far fewer touches. They should be able to easily outclass the Cleveland Browns this week.

[jax] Jacksonville Jaguars

Power Ranking: 11

  • Record: 7-4
  • Previous Rank: 6
  • Week 12 result: Loss versus Arizona Cardinals, 27-24
  • Week 13: versus Indianapolis Colts

I’ve said it before in this space, but every time I want to buy into Jacksonville is for real, they drop a game they shouldn’t lose. This was the case again this past week when they let third-string quarterback Blaine Gabbert put up 27 points on what is supposed to be one of the best defenses in the league. They still are a great unit, but this was a very poor performance. It highlights the biggest issue on the Jaguars which is if they can’t control the flow with Leonard Fournette and the run game, they’re likely toast. The trust just isn’t there with quarterback Blake Bortles and if we know it sitting on our couch, he knows it too. They head home to face a far inferior Colts squad that they destroyed in Indy just a few weeks ago.

[the_ad id=”72096″][the_ad id=”69556″]

Tennessee Titans

Power Ranking: 12

  • Record: 7-4
  • Previous Rank: 12
  • Week 12 result: Win versus Indianapolis Colts, 20-16
  • Week 13: versus Houston Texans

They may sit at 7-4 and the number three seed in the AFC as of this moment, but the Tennessee Titans are far from a scary team right now. The offense just isn’t clicking and the Titans coaching staff has to realize that they need to hitch their wagons to Derrick Henry. DeMarco Murray just isn’t cutting it right now and it’s a disservice to the team to pretend otherwise. He’s had 20 rush attempts for 19 yards the past two weeks. Henry has had the same number of rush attempts and has churned out 109 yards on the ground. The Titans offense will not be effective without a good running game because many of the passing concepts are built off the run. This also includes designed run plays for quarterback Marcus Mariota, who needs to step up as well. They have a home game versus a Houston squad that should be a win this week.

Washington Redskins

Power Ranking: 13

  • Record: 5-6
  • Previous Rank: 15
  • Week 12 result: Win versus New York Giants, 20-10
  • Week 13: at Dallas Cowboys, Thursday Night Football

Kirk CousinsWashington hasn’t looked very good doing it at times this year, but they just keep fighting and clawing even though the team is decimated by injuries. From the offensive line to the skill players to the defense, the Redskins have had it rough so far this year. The offense is going to have to be built on quarterback Kirk Cousins and his receiving duo of Jamison Crowder and Josh Doctson with running back Samaje Perine doing his best to keep the chains going. They eked out a victory versus the Giants on Thanksgiving night As long as Cousins remains upright, they have a chance to beat any team on any given week. They should be able to hammer the Dallas defense this Thursday night.

Buffalo Bills

Power Ranking: 14

  • Record: 6-5
  • Previous Rank: 21
  • Week 12 result: Win versus Kansas City Chiefs
  • Week 13: versus New England Patriots

Isn’t it just amazing what happens when you have a competent, NFL-level quarterback on the field? Tyrod Taylor may not be what everyone wants him to be but he’s clearly in the top 20 as far as quarterbacks go. That may not sound great, but teams like the Denver Broncos would sure take it right now. The Bills defense came to play as well after being non-existent for the last three weeks. They shut down the Chiefs in Arrowhead, which is impressive. Buffalo has themselves firmly in the Wild Card hunt, despite the coaching staff and front office trying to sabotage it at certain points. It’s a good thing they pulled this one out because the Patriots come to Buffalo this week.

Detroit Lions

Power Ranking: 15

  • Record: 6-5
  • Previous Rank: 10
  • Week 12 result: Loss versus Minnesota Vikings, 30-23
  • Week 13: at Baltimore Ravens

Detroit remains a fringe playoff contender and their team is fairly simple at this point – they will go as far as quarterback Matthew Stafford will take them. The offense doesn’t have many standouts after Stafford and receiving duo Golden Tate and Marvin Jones. Tate is coming off two stinkers in a row and the Lions have only won one of those contests. Their defense is just very mediocre and they don’t have the talent to really hold down a great offense. There’s not a lot of shame in giving up points to the Vikings like they did this past Thursday as Minnesota is just that good. Stafford did suffer a leg injury in this contest but didn’t miss a snap at it does not appear major. They travel to face a stout Ravens defense this week.

Baltimore Ravens

Power Ranking: 16

  • Record: 6-5
  • Previous Rank: 17
  • Week 12 result: Win versus Houston Texans, 23-16
  • Week 13: versus Detroit Lions
[the_ad id=”71961″]The Ravens are a playoff team as it stands but it’s hard to believe they can beat anyone in the postseason with this popgun offense. Quarterback Joe Flacco threw the ball 32 times and managed just 142 passing yards. Even though the defense is very good, that offense just isn’t going to get the job done. There are no explosive elements at all and they try to work in three different running backs. This team seems like a lot of smoke and mirrors and it wouldn’t be surprising at all if they fall from this spot in the ranks soon.

Cincinnati Bengals

Power Ranking: 17

  • Record: 5-6
  • Previous Rank: 18
  • Week 12 result: Win versus Cleveland Browns, 30-16
  • Week 13: versus Pittsburgh Steelers, Monday Night Football

Joe MixonIt took 12 weeks but running back Joe Mixon finally had a breakout game. The rookie piled up total yards and scored a touchdown. Cincinnati handled their business against Cleveland without much issue and it’s hard to grade any team that plays the Browns at the moment. The Bengals have recovered from their poor start pretty nicely and could make a run at a Wild Card spot. A victory against the Steelers this week would go a long way towards that goal.

Kansas City Chiefs

Power Ranking: 18

  • Record: 6-5
  • Previous Rank: 16
  • Week 12 result: Loss versus Buffalo Bills, 16-10
  • Week 13: at New York Jets

The Chiefs have fully disintegrated after a loss to the Bulls on Sunday. They were held to one first down in the entire first half! Quarterback Alex Smith seems to be feeling the pressure and has to be hearing the calls for rookie Patrick Mahomes at this point. The running game isn’t helping either as Kareem Hunt has vanished. The Bills had been gouged on the ground for the past few weeks and Hunt couldn’t even crack 20 yards. Critics will point to 11 carries but the Chiefs didn’t have the ball enough in this game. They need to come up with answers in a hurry because the Chargers are breathing down their neck. It’s a borderline must win this week in New York, which happens to be where the Chiefs just lost to the Giants.

Dallas Cowboys

Power Ranking: 19

  • Record: 5-6
  • Previous Rank: 13
  • Week 12 result: Loss versus Los Angeles Chargers, 28-6
  • Week 13: versus Washington Redskins, Thursday Night Football

Dak Prescott Fantasy FootballSpeaking of teams that have totally fallen apart, how about them Cowboys?? I would have never dreamed that running back Ezekiel Elliott meant so much to the Dallas offense. That’s not a knock on Zeke either. He’s an incredibly talented player. Still, this offense can’t do anything without him. Even the return of left tackle Tyron Smith didn’t help against the Chargers. Quarterback Dak Prescott looks lost and the defense can’t stop anyone without linebacker Sean Lee. The difference between Elliott in the lineup and without him has been incredible to see. The Cowboys are in dire straits and badly need a win versus the division rival Redskins on Thursday.

New York Jets

Power Ranking: 20

  • Record: 4-7
  • Previous Rank: 19
  • Week 12 result: Loss versus Carolina Panthers, 35-27
  • Week 13: versus Kansas City Chiefs

The Jets really gave the Panthers all they wanted on Sunday and a lot of that was on the strength of wide receiver Robby Anderson. He’s been a stud for over a month now and has been one of the biggest positives in this season for New York. It would have been a cherry on top to beat the Panthers, but the Jets have exceeded expectations this season. They will be one of the teams looking to draft a QB in this year’s draft as Josh McCown is obviously not the long-term answer. It won’t be surprising to see Bryce Petty or Christian Hackenberg at the end so the Jets see what they have. They have every chance to beat the Chiefs this week.

[the_ad id=”66460″][the_ad id=”66090″]

Oakland Raiders

Power Ranking: 21

  • Record: 5-6
  • Previous Rank: 23
  • Week 12 result: Win versus Denver Broncos, 21-14
  • Week 13: versus New York Giants

The “highlight” of this game was a wild brawl that was sparked by receiver Michael Crabtree and Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib. It was a pretty ridiculous display of selfishness from both players and not a good look for the league. The NFL agreed and suspended Crabtree and Talib both two games. The Raiders rode out the game on the back of Marshawn Lynch, who had his best game yet. It didn’t help they lost receiver Amari Cooper to a concussion and his status for this week is up in the air at best. Oakland is not a very good team but they have a chance in the suddenly wide open AFC West. They have a very winnable matchup versus the Giants this week, although it will be harder if Crabtree and Cooper are both missing.

Houston Texans

Power Ranking: 22

  • Record: 4-7
  • Previous Rank: 20
  • Week 12 result: Win versus Houston Texans, 23-16
  • Week 13: at Tennessee Titans

Another week and it’s the same old story for the Texans. They are too beat up to get that win. It’s really a shame that Deshaun Watson got hurt because the only player worth watching on the offense is DeAndre Hopkins. My word is he a good receiver. Past that, don’t be surprised if we see T.J. Yates next week in Tennessee. Tom Savage can’t stop turning the ball over and had an egregious pick in the closing moments to seal the game. The Texans will have to wait for next year to make a run in the AFC.

Arizona Cardinals

Power Ranking: 23

  • Record: 5-6
  • Previous Rank: 29
  • Week 12 result: Win versus Jacksonville Jaguar, 27-24
  • Week 13: versus Los Angeles Rams

I’m still trying to figure out how the Cardinals are 5-6 at this point of the year. They lost running back David Johnson immediately and then quarterback Carson Palmer around the middle of the year. Still, they keep on fighting and one of the more fascinating stories heading into 2018 for this team is Coach Bruce Arians breathing life into the career of Blaine Gabbert. He’s performed admirably and given the dearth of quality quarterback play around the league, it’s bound to attract attention. Do the Cardinals keep him given the age of Palmer or try to capitalize on his play and move him? It will be interesting to find out. They have a tough matchup against the Rams on tap, who whitewashed Arizona the last time they met.

[the_ad id=”73518″][the_ad id=”61518″]

Chicago Bears

Power Ranking: 24

  • Record: 3-8
  • Previous Rank: 22
  • Week 12 result: Loss versus Philadelphia Eagles, 31-3
  • Week 13: versus San Francisco 49ers

This result was almost as predictable as the Patriots rolling over the Dolphins. Chicago had no chance from the opening coin flip and Coach John Fox should be gone shortly. When you’re on the road and facing a 4th and 2 or a 56-yard field goal, just go for it. You’re up against a far superior team and need to take some chances to win the game. The Bears finished with just six yards rushing on the day and given the lack of receivers, they will never win a game with that lack of production on the ground. Only fantasy players will be interested in the Bears versus the 49ers this week.

Indianapolis Colts

Power Ranking: 25

  • Record: 3-8
  • Previous Rank: 24
  • Week 12 result: Loss versus Tennessee Titans, 20-16
  • Week 13: at Jacksonville Jaguars

Indy looked sluggish coming off of their bye and couldn’t quite hold onto the victory as Tennessee eventually ground them out. The Colts continue to slog their way through a lost season and will look to rebuild in 2018. Receiver T.Y. Hilton was quiet yet again and this time it was a game where he should have been able to come through. It’s also time to see what running back Marlon Mack can do with a full workload. It was a bit of a surprise to see the offense do so little. The road gets much tougher in Jacksonville this week.

Green Bay Packers

Power Ranking: 26

  • Record: 5-6
  • Previous Rank: 25
  • Week 12 result: Loss versus Pittsburgh Steelers, 31-28
  • Week 13: versus Tampa Bay Buccaneers

In a game nobody thought they could compete, the Packers almost walked into Heinz Field and stole a win. Quarterback Brett Hundley showed a little bit more reason to believe he can actually be an NFL backup. He made some good plays but balanced it out with some poor ones as well. The defense actually played pretty well outside of defending Antonio Brown, but there aren’t many teams that can. Green Bay could actually still contend for a Wild Card spot if they can find a way to beat the Buccaneers this week.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Power Ranking: 27

  • Record: 4-7
  • Previous Rank: 26
  • Week 12 result: Loss versus Atlanta Falcons, 34-20
  • Week 13: at Green Bay Packers

The final score may not reflect it, but the Buccaneers actually made this a game late until the Falcons slated it away with under two minutes to go. It still might be too late to save the season, but it is something small to try and build on in these last few weeks. The offense just isn’t consistent enough to stick with most teams and I’m not too sure what the gameplan was to try and defend Julio Jones this week. Whatever it was, it didn’t work.  Tampa will look to play spoiler this week in Green Bay and they might have quarterback Jameis Winston back as well.

New York Giants

Power Ranking: 28

  • Record: 2-9
  • Previous Rank: 28
  • Week 12 result: Loss versus Washington Redskins, 20-10
  • Week 13: at Oakland Raiders

Eli ManningNew York actually hung in this game a lot longer than most thought and they haven’t been playing that badly since their embarrassing loss to San Francisco a few weeks ago. It’s far too late for 2017, but it’s possible some players are saving their jobs right now. Running back Orleans Darkwa continues to be a pleasant surprise, especially since Paul Perkins was supposed to seize the job. The only thing left in this season for the Giants is to decide how much of a rebuild they need. One thing is for sure, they will be in the market for a quarterback in the draft in 2018. They actually could rise up and beat Oakland this week as the Raiders could be very short-handed on offense.

Denver Broncos

Power Ranking: 29

  • Record: 3-8
  • Previous Rank: 27
  • Week 12 result: Loss versus Oakland Raiders, 21-14
  • Week 13: at Miami Dolphins

This Broncos team is just an absolute mess. The defense has taken a large step backward. The offense is totally without direction and they don’t have a quarterback on the roster. The trio of Trevor Seimian, Brock Osweiler, and Paxton Lynch aren’t going to cut it. The run game is ineffective and Denver might be looking for a larger reload than some people realize. They flaws run deep on this team. They go on the road to Miami this upcoming week in what looks like a dreadful game on paper.

San Francisco 49ers

Power Ranking: 30

  • Record: 1-10
  • Previous Rank: 30
  • Week 12 result: Loss versus Seattle Seahawks, 24-13
  • Week 13: at Chicago Bears

Has any fanbase ever been so excited by three passing attempts than the San Francisco fans? I can’t say I blame them as they(possibly) got a glimpse of their future when quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo entered the game for three plays and threw a touchdown in the waning seconds of the game. When you’re 1-10, it’s time to see what you traded for. Jimmy G should be the starter the rest of the way. Coach Kyle Shanahan’s team will be interesting in the coming years. Playing in Chicago is one of the more boring matchups this week.

Miami Dolphins

Power Ranking: 31

  • Record: 4-7
  • Previous Rank: 31
  • Week 12 result: Loss versus New England Patriots, 35-17
  • Week 13: versus Denver Broncos

A word of advice to receiver Kenny Stills(yes, he reads this article. Why wouldn’t he?). Don’t attempt to trash talk Tom Brady. It will never end well for you. Stills gave Brady lip all game and apparently it didn’t work very well. He likely should have focused more on catching passes and putting points up. At some point, Coach Adam Gase’s reputation as a great offensive mind has to come into question. The offense is terrible and the roster looks thin at best. Do they have their quarterback for 2018 on the roster? Jay Cutler is almost certainly gone and they can get out from the Ryan Tannehill contract fairly easily. The Dolphins are in for a very interesting offseason.

Cleveland Browns

Power Ranking: 32

  • Record: 0-11
  • Previous Rank: 32
  • Week 12 result: Loss versus Cincinnati Bengals, 30-16
  • Week 13: at Los Angeles Chargers

This team is abject disaster personified. They have some budding stars in Myles Garrett and maybe Corey Coleman but they need to nail this upcoming draft. They have a ton of picks but it won’t matter if the picks don’t pan out. We’ll see if Coach Hue Jackson will be back, but the smart money is on he will not.
