NFL Power Rankings Week 12

In preparation for Thanksgiving, Week 11 was an ideal bye week for the Gridiron Experts’ Power Rankings. Rested and re-energized for a late-season push, we’re back and psyched for Week 12! Though the Saints seem to increase their stranglehold on the #1 spot with each passing week, the Rams and Chiefs put on a Monday Night Football game for the ages.

At this point in the season, I could see any of the top 5 teams winning the Super Bowl. And speaking of, these rankings loosely reflect my current Super Bowl odds.

New Orleans Saints

Power Ranking: 1

  • Record: 9-1
  • Week 11: Win vs Eagles, 48-7
  • Week 12: Thursday Night Football vs ATL

Can anyone stop the Saints’ offense?

Los Angeles Rams

Power Ranking: 2

  • Record: 10-1
  • Week 11: Win vs Chiefs, 54-51
  • Week 12: Bye

Their Week 12 bye is a well-earned reward for the Rams’ impressive 10-1 start to the season. Even more impressive? They can potentially clinch the NFC West without even playing this weekend.

Kansas City Chiefs

Power Ranking: 3

  • Record: 9-2
  • Week 11: Loss @ Rams, 54-51
  • Week 12: Bye

Teams rarely score 51 points and lose. Teams also rarely give up 54 points.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Power Ranking: 4

  • Record: 7-2-1
  • Week 11: Win @ Jaguars, 20-16
  • Week 12: @ DEN

In some ways, the Steelers’ fourth-quarter performance in Jacksonville was more impressive than their 52-point outburst against Carolina on TNF the week prior.

New England Patriots

Power Ranking: 5

  • Record: 7-3
  • Week 11: Bye
  • Week 12: @ NYJ

The Pats will have had almost two weeks to think about their Week 10 manhandling in Nashville when they travel to MetLife Stadium this weekend. For the Jets, that’s prognosis negative.

Los Angeles Chargers

Power Ranking: 6

  • Record: 7-3
  • Week 11: Loss vs Broncos, 23-22
  • Week 12: vs ARI

Game-wrecking DE Joey Bosa finally returned in Week 11, and should be a big difference-maker for the defense as his snaps increase.

Chicago Bears

Power Ranking: 7

  • Record: 7-3
  • Week 11: Win vs Vikings, 25-20
  • Week 12: Thanksgiving 12:30 @ DET

The Bears have been playing great football, but besides the fact that QB Mitchell Trubisky is doubtful for Week 12, their Thanksgiving game in Detroit has “trap” written all over it.

Houston Texans

Power Ranking: 8

  • Record: 7-3
  • Week 11: Win @ Redskins, 23-21
  • Week 12: Monday Night Football vs TEN

After starting 0-3, the Texans have won 7 in a row and now have a realistic shot at a first-round bye.

Carolina Panthers

Power Ranking: 9

  • Record: 6-4
  • Week 11: Loss @ Lions, 20-19
  • Week 12: vs SEA

Ron Rivera has to hope his decision to go for two and the win in Detroit doesn’t come back to haunt the Panthers for playoff seeding.

Minnesota Vikings

Power Ranking: 10

  • Record: 5-4-1
  • Week 11: Loss @ Bears, 25-20
  • Week 12: Sunday Night Football vs GB

After a tough loss in Chicago, Minnesota will host the Packers in a de facto playoff elimination game on SNF.

Seattle Seahawks

Power Ranking: 11

  • Record: 5-5
  • Week 11: Win vs Packers, 27-24
  • Week 12: @ CAR

A potential playoff matchup with the Seahawks would have to be a legitimate concern for the Rams.

Indianapolis Colts

Power Ranking: 12

  • Record: 5-5
  • Week 11: Win vs Titans, 38-10
  • Week 12: vs MIA

Frank Reich has very quickly transformed the Colts from a punchline to a legitimate contender, and the biggest key has been the team’s improved protection of Andrew Luck.

Baltimore Ravens

Power Ranking: 13

  • Record: 5-5
  • Week 11: Win vs Bengals, 24-21
  • Week 12: vs OAK

Do the Ravens have a new starting QB? It’s a riddle that may not be resolved this week.

Tennessee Titans

Power Ranking: 14

  • Record: 5-5
  • Previous Rank: 18
  • Week 11: Loss @ Colts, 38-10
  • Week 12: Monday Night Football @ HOU

Which version of the Titans will show up for their crucial MNF matchup with the Texans? The answer will likely define the rest of their season.

Green Bay Packers

Power Ranking: 15

  • Record: 4-5-1
  • Week 11: Loss @ Seahawks, 27-24
  • Week 12: Sunday Night Football @ MIN

Mike McCarthy arguably coached the Packers out of a chance to win in Seattle on TNF. Barring Green Bay running the table, McCarthy’s days as head coach appear to be numbered.

Philadelphia Eagles

Power Ranking: 16

  • Record: 4-6
  • Week 11: Loss @ Saints, 48-7
  • Week 12: vs NYG

Hosting the Giants is a great way for the defending champs to get back on track. Unfortunately, it may be too little, too late.

Dallas Cowboys

Power Ranking: 17

  • Record: 5-5
  • Week 11: Win @ Falcons, 22-19
  • Week 12: Thanksgiving 4:30 vs WAS

Consecutive wins have the Cowboys back in the NFC playoff picture. A win on Thanksgiving would get them back above .500.

Atlanta Falcons

Power Ranking: 18

  • Record: 4-6
  • Week 11: Loss vs Cowboys, 22-19
  • Week 12: Thursday Night Football @ NO

The Week 11 loss to Dallas dealt a significant blow to the playoff hopes for an Atlanta team that appeared to be rebounding from early-season struggles. Traveling to New Orleans on a short week will likely be the nail in the coffin.

Washington Redskins

Power Ranking: 19

  • Record: 5-5
  • Week 11: Loss vs Texans, 23-21
  • Week 12: Thanksgiving 4:30 @ DAL

Even in a wide-open NFC East, the Redskins were dealt a huge blow by QB Alex Smith’s gruesome, season-ending leg injury. It’ll be Colt McCoy the rest of the way.

Cincinnati Bengals

Power Ranking: 20

  • Record: 5-5
  • Week 11: Loss @ Ravens, 24-21
  • Week 12: vs CLE

The Bengals graduated from giving up 500 yards of offense to “only” giving up 400 yards against the Ravens in Lamar Jackson’s first career start.

Denver Broncos

Power Ranking: 21

  • Record: 4-6
  • Week 11: Win @ Chargers, 23-22
  • Week 12: vs PIT

With a few improvements on defense and a proper franchise QB in place for 2019, the Broncos could be one of the best teams in the AFC.

Detroit Lions

Power Ranking: 22

  • Record: 4-6
  • Week 11: Win vs Panthers, 20-19
  • Week 12: Thanksgiving 12:30 vs CHI

On playoff life support, the Lions will be catching a huge break if Bears’ QB Mitchell Trubisky can’t play on Thanksgiving.

Miami Dolphins

Power Ranking: 23

  • Record: 5-5
  • Week 11: Bye
  • Week 12: @ IND

It sounds like QB Ryan Tannehill could return for Miami’s crucial Week 12 matchup with the Colts.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Power Ranking: 24

  • Record: 3-7
  • Week 11: Loss vs Steelers, 20-16
  • Week 12: @ BUF

A dominant 55-minute performance by the Jags’ defense wasn’t enough to beat the Steelers in Week 11. Jacksonville can now start thinking about 2019.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Power Ranking: 25

  • Record: 3-7
  • Week 11: Loss @ Giants, 38-35
  • Week 12: vs SF

Does it matter who starts at quarterback the rest of the season? For Dirk Koetter, the end is nigh.

Cleveland Browns

Power Ranking: 26

  • Record: 3-6-1
  • Week 11: Bye
  • Week 12: @ CIN

Will this week’s trip to Cincinnati be a Hue Jackson revenge game?

New York Jets

Power Ranking: 27

  • Record: 3-7
  • Week 11: Bye
  • Week 12: vs NE

Will Le’Veon Bell join Sam Darnold in the Jets’ backfield in 2019? He’s more likely to be a Jet next season than Todd Bowles.

New York Giants

Power Ranking: 28

  • Record: 3-7
  • Week 11: Win vs Buccaneers, 38-35
  • Week 12: vs SF

Either the Giants are getting better, or their competition is getting worse. I suspect it’s a little of Column A, a little of Column B.

San Francisco 49ers

Power Ranking: 29

  • Record: 2-8
  • Week 11: Bye
  • Week 12: @ TB

The race for the #1 pick is on!

Oakland Raiders

Power Ranking: 30

  • Record: 3-7
  • Week 11: Win @ Cardinals, 23-21
  • Week 12: @ BAL

The 2018 Raiders can’t even tank properly, likely blowing their shot at the #1 pick by beating the Cards in Week 11. At least they have acquired two other first rounders in 2019?

Arizona Cardinals

Power Ranking: 31

  • Record: 2-8
  • Week 11: Loss vs Raiders, 23-21
  • Week 12: @ LAC

Good news for the Cardinals: their Week 11 loss to the Raiders gave them the inside track for the #1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Buffalo Bills

Power Ranking: 32

  • Record: 3-7
  • Week 11: Bye
  • Week 12: vs JAC

It’s actually a little sad that we won’t get to see Nathan Peterman start another game for the Bills this season. It’s a win for the Bills, but a loss for NFL Twitter.
