NFL Best Bets: Week 16
A lot of people don’t realize that sports prognosticators make Santa’s naughty or nice list based on how well they performed with their picks this year. Since we’ve been profitable, we made the nice list! Turns out Santa reads this column, and thanks to the picks we’ve nailed, he made enough money to enchant the sleigh with a turbo boost and treat the reindeer to some premium hoof polish. Let’s see if we can keep spreading holiday cheer with another set of winning NFL picks this week!
Last week, we posted another winning record, going 2-1 against the spread, which brings our season tally to an impressive 29-16. The Bengals and Jets delivered as expected, covering the spread and keeping us on track. Unfortunately, the Commanders let us down in heartbreaking fashion, falling victim to a last-second Saints touchdown that flipped a sure win into a loss. Betting against the spread means no game is truly over until it’s over, even when the winner is no longer in doubt. It’s not for the faint of heart, but that’s half the fun.
This week’s picks don’t have any common themes or trends tying them together. While my model backs them, they’re also what I’d call “vibe” picks. Some teams are giving off bad vibes, while I’m picking up good vibrations from others (shout out to The Beach Boys). Analytics are the cornerstone of long-term profitability in betting, but sometimes, you’ve got to listen to your gut.

Lions -6.5 at Bears
I’m getting some seriously bad vibes from the Bears this week. Since Matt Eberflus was fired, Chicago has looked like a team that’s completely lost its way. They’ve dropped their last two games by an average of 21.5 points, and their offense has been abysmal, producing the fewest first-half yards in the league over the past three weeks.
This feels like a matchup where Detroit’s urgency and offensive firepower will outweigh their defensive struggles. Chicago just doesn’t have the tools to fully exploit the Lions’ injury-depleted defense, especially with how out of sync they’ve been on offense.
Detroit knows what’s at stake in the NFC North, and even though they’re not perfect, they’re far more capable of taking control of this game than the Bears. With Chicago spiraling, I like the Lions to cover here.
Commanders +3.5 vs Eagles
I’m getting good vibes from the Commanders this week. I like them to cover the +3.5 spread at home. Jayden Daniels looks fully recovered from the rib injury that limited him earlier in the season, and Washington is finally getting healthier on both sides of the ball. Marshon Lattimore has made an immediate impact in the secondary, shutting down opposing receivers, and the offense is coming off a bye week with a chance to reset and refocus.
The Commanders’ methodical offensive approach might not be flashy, but it’s effective at controlling the pace of the game. Jayden Daniels has been one of the league’s best in tight-window throws, and with Terry McLaurin leading the way, this offense can keep the chains moving and put points on the board. Add in the home crowd and the chance to make a statement, and I’m feeling good about Washington here.
Jets +3 vs Rams
I’m getting good vibes from the Jets this week, especially from Aaron Rodgers and the offense, which has shown signs of life in recent games. Rodgers is coming off his best two performances of the season, including a comeback win over the Jaguars where he and Davante Adams reestablished their magical connection. The Jets have also won and covered in two straight games, and with the Rams traveling cross-country for a cold-weather game, I like New York’s chances to keep it rolling at home.
Rodgers looks like he’s finding his rhythm, and while the Jets’ season hasn’t gone as planned, this team has shown that it can compete when Rodgers is on his game. The Rams may be riding high, but they’re in a tricky spot here, coming off two emotional divisional wins and with two more critical games ahead. This feels like a perfect spot for the Jets to take advantage of a letdown and make things interesting.
The weather at MetLife could also play a factor. Temperatures in the 20s and gusty winds are far from ideal for a Rams team that has avoided cold-weather games this season. Meanwhile, Rodgers is no stranger to these conditions and has a history of delivering in late-season games. I like New York to cover the +3 spread at home.
