Monday Night Football Packers Bears

Welcome to the Gridiron Experts Ultimate Guide to Monday Night. Whether you are a fan of the teams doing battle, have fantasy football or gaming implications, or you’re simply looking for creative ways to increase your alcohol intake during the Monday Night Football telecast, we’ve got you covered. MNF this week hosts the oldest rivalry in the league, as the 4-3 Chicago Bears visit the 5-2 Green Bay Packers.

Chicago Bears at Green Bay Packers (-8.0)

After starting the season 3-0, the Bears have lost three of their last four games, and in Week 7 lost their quarterback to injury. With Jay Cutler sidelined, Josh McCown will make his first start since 2011, as Chicago looks to get back into the thick of the NFC North race. The change at quarterback has Brandon Marshall outside of the top-10 in our fantasy wide receiver rankings for the first time in recent memory, but we still consider Matt Forte a top-5 option at running back. Green Bay’s defense has been more susceptible to the pass than the run this season, however, so McCown will likely have to take some shots to Marshall and Alshon Jeffrey if the Bears want to keep pace with a Packers team that averages almost 440 yards per game. While McCown isn’t someone you want to be counting on in fantasy leagues, don’t be surprised if he puts up a decent effort as he takes the reins of the Marc Trestman offense.

The Packers’ season has been almost the exact opposite of Chicago’s, as they go off to a 1-2 start before winning their last four games. While Aaron Rodgers continues to lead one of the league’s best passing attacks, Green Bay has found success running the ball for the first time in years. The Packers enter Week 9 as the third best rushing team in the NFL, and rookie Eddie Lacy has eclipsed 100 total yards in each of the last three games. Meanwhile, Chicago has been gouged on the ground in recent weeks, including the 209 rushing yards surrendered to Washington in their last game. Expect a heavy dose of Lacy from the Packers on Monday night, while Rodgers continues with his usual stellar play. We had Rodgers, Lacy, and wide receiver Jordy Nelson each within the top-4 at their respective positions for fantasy purposes in Week 9.

My Prediction:

Outside of Denver, the Bears and Packers are the two highest-scoring teams in the NFL, both averaging better than 30 points per game. All signs point to Green Bay having continued success on offense, but it will be interesting to see if Chicago can keep pace without Jay Cutler. The Packers have dominated this rivalry in recent years, winning six games in a row dating back to Week 17 of the 2010 season, and three of the last four contests have been decided by 10 point or more. Chicago should be able to put some points on the board, but they will not be able to keep pace with Aaron Rodgers and company. I’ll take the Packers minus the points this week.

Green Bay 34, Chicago 23

DSCN0093Beer of the Week

The Beer of the Week represents a tasty offering from the city/region hosting the week’s Monday Night Football contest. Feel free to incorporate the Beer of the Week into the MNF Drinking Game.

Hinterland Luna Coffee Stout – Located less than 10 minutes from Lambeau Field, Hinterland is a small artisanal brewery that produces just six year-round selections, the darkest of which is the Luna Coffee Stout. This beer has a bold but not overwhelming aroma of coffee, with a hint of chocolate, and the taste builds on that flavor profile. Roasted coffee notes develop into a dark malt feel, but the Luna Coffee Stout is surprisingly light and easy to drink. Overall, a very nice offering from Title Town USA.
