Texans News: WR Boutte Added Through Trade
The much-speculated trade of Kayshon Boutte is official. The New England Patriots have traded the wide receiver to the Houston Texans in exchange for safety Jaylen Reed and a draft pick, according to Tom Pelissero, with Ian Rapoport confirming the deal shortly after.
The move comes directly in response to Houston losing Jayden Higgins for the season to a torn ACL suffered in a joint practice with the Raiders. Houston Chronicle reporting had indicated the Texans contacted multiple teams about receiver help in the days following the injury, with Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 first identifying Boutte, along with Baltimore’s Rashod Bateman, as names Houston had explored. New England’s initial asking price reportedly gave the Texans pause, but the two sides ultimately found common ground.
Boutte, a sixth-round pick out of LSU in 2023, spent three seasons in New England, totaling 78 receptions for 1,159 yards and nine touchdowns. He set career highs in 2025 with 33 catches for 551 yards and six touchdowns across 14 games, production that came even with his playing time somewhat limited by a hamstring injury. He still played 55.48% of New England’s offensive snaps last season, second on the team behind only Mack Hollins, and emerged as one of the Patriots’ most explosive downfield threats, ranking fourth in the NFL in yards per reception (16.7) and pushing that average up to 18.7 in the playoffs.
The writing had been on the wall in New England for months. Boutte reportedly requested a trade as far back as April, shortly after the Patriots acquired A.J. Brown via trade and signed Romeo Doubs in free agency, a buildup that left him buried behind two significant additions in a contract year.
In Houston, Boutte joins a receiver room that got busy fast in the wake of Higgins’ injury. The Texans also worked out and signed free agents Zay Jones and Sterling Shepard within the past week, meaning Boutte arrives to a suddenly reshuffled group that includes Nico Collins, Jaylin Noel, Xavier Hutchinson, Tank Dell, Jones, and Shepard. Even so, Boutte’s downfield ability and 5-foot-11, 203-pound frame give him a distinct role as a big-play threat for quarterback C.J. Stroud, something Houston’s offense could use given its struggles to consistently stretch the field.

Obviously, Boutte now lands on a team clearly in need of an offense, giving him a real opportunity to carve out a role behind Collins as the season progresses, particularly if his chemistry with Stroud develops quickly. Gridiron Experts will be moving him up in our Draft Rankings today.
One side note: The Patriots added depth by adding Jayln Reed and must feel very comfortable about their current WR depth; however, AJ Brown is 29 and has missed time in each of the last two seasons. I’m a little surprised they would make this move considering Brown’s injury history.
