Jim Harbaugh Becomes LA Chargers New Head Coach

Chargers

On Wednesday, the National Champion Michigan Wolverines revealed that Jim Harbaugh would be leaving the team to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.

Sources told Adam Schefter of ESPN that Harbaugh’s contract is five years.

Jim Harbaugh’s impact at Michigan? Wins, controversies, and nine years that will never be forgotten. He had been successful in both college and professional football; Ryan McGee Harbaugh was seen as one of the best choices for this coaching job. Since his first job as a head coach at the University of San Diego in 2006, Harbaugh has succeeded at Stanford, Michigan, and in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers.

“Jim Harbaugh is football personified, and I can think of no one better to lead the Chargers forward,” owner Dean Spanos said in a statement. “The son of a coach, brother of a coach and father of a coach who himself was coached by names like Schembechler and Ditka, for the past two decades Jim has led hundreds of men to success everywhere he’s been — as their coach. And today, Jim Harbaugh returns to the Chargers, this time as our coach. Who has it better than us?”

While most people are looking at Fanduel DFS odds for the NFL championship weekend, Harbaugh and company might be looking a little further ahead. Despite the loaded Chargers roster, the team currently holds the 5th overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Getting to coach Justin Herbert and building a running game for the struggling yet talented Austin Ekeler are enticing reasons why Harbaugh took the job, but this first-round pick may be worth its weight in gold. With the team already set at Quarterback, the offers from QB-hungry teams could be massive, setting the Chargers up for years to come.

Daniel Jeremiah’s first mock draft included three quarterbacks to start the draft. That means the Chargers can go in any direction outside of the projected WR Marvin Harrison Jr. at pick 4. With a projected 5 QBs worthy of the first-round pick, someone might be willing to move up and pay a heavy ransom for pick 5. That or Harbaugh can build the Chargers around a talented top 5 rookie.

Jim Harbaugh Impact

Harbaugh is a former quarterback who is known for building explosive attacks and working with quarterbacks. Herbert has never had a coach like Harbaugh. David Lombardi of The Athletic says that Harbaugh has brought out the best in many players, such as Josh Johnson at the University of San Diego, Andrew Luck at Stanford, Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick with the 49ers, and J.J. McCarthy at Michigan.

In his four years with the Chargers, Herbert has thrown for 4,306 yards, scored 29 touchdowns, and picked off 10.5 passes. Since he coached Andrew Luck at Stanford, this is the best quarterback Harbaugh has had.

He’s also 30-32 as a starter and hasn’t won a knockout game yet.
