Jayden Daniels Knee Injury Clouds Commanders’ Outlook

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels sprained his left knee in Thursday’s 27-18 loss to the Green Bay Packers, raising questions about his availability for the upcoming matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders. The injury occurred late in the game, and Daniels was seen leaving the locker room with an ice pack on his knee and a noticeable limp. An MRI the next day revealed a sprain but no major structural damage. His status remains uncertain heading into Week 3, but it is possible he will miss his first career start.

If Daniels cannot go, Marcus Mariota would take over under center. The veteran has stepped in before, including last season when Daniels briefly exited two games. Mariota is expected to handle first-team reps in practice this week in preparation for the Raiders.

The loss to Green Bay was damaging for Washington in more ways than one. Running back Austin Ekeler suffered a torn Achilles tendon and will miss the rest of the season. The offseason acquisition had been brought in to add versatility to the backfield, providing both rushing and receiving ability. His absence leaves a significant gap, with rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt and other reserves now expected to shoulder the workload.

Defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. also suffered a season-ending injury. He tore a quadriceps muscle, which will require surgery. Wise had been an experienced presence on the defensive line, and his loss will test Washington’s depth on the edge. The team will now rely more heavily on younger players to generate pressure.

The injuries did not stop there. Receiver Noah Brown and tight end John Bates both exited the game with groin injuries, and their availability for the Raiders game is uncertain. Cornerback Jonathan Jones also left with a hamstring injury. The status of all three will be monitored closely this week. Losing multiple pass catchers could further complicate matters for an offense already adjusting to life without Ekeler.

Daniels had started the season strong, building on his Offensive Rookie of the Year campaign in 2024. Through two games, he had thrown for more than 400 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions while also contributing on the ground. His dual-threat ability has been central to Washington’s offense, and his potential absence looms large.

Head coach Dan Quinn emphasized after the game that the team would prepare for all scenarios. Protecting the football and limiting penalties will be key as the Commanders face a Raiders defense that has shown aggressiveness early in the season. Washington will need a clean performance to overcome the rash of injuries.

The Commanders were relatively healthy during last year’s 12-5 season, which helped fuel their run to the NFC Championship Game. This year has already presented a different challenge. Losing Ekeler and Wise for the season in the same week is a significant setback, and the possibility of Daniels missing time only adds to the adversity. Monday’s updates will be critical as Washington shapes its plan for the week.
