[the_ad id=”105842″]Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow will undergo surgery after suffering a severe toe injury during their 31-27 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The injury is expected to sideline him for at least three months. Burrow was injured in the second quarter when Jaguars defensive end Arik Armstead collapsed the pocket, sacking Burrow. He was trapped underneath other players falling on him. He limped off after the play, initially tried to walk but later required assistance from trainers. He left the field wearing a walking boot and using crutches.
Backup Jake Browning entered at quarterback. Browning completed 21 of 32 passes for 241 yards, tossed two touchdowns and threw three interceptions. He then capped the comeback with a one-yard sneak in the final seconds to secure the win for Cincinnati.
With Burrow’s recovery estimated at three months, the Bengals no longer have a veteran starter at quarterback for the near term. As of Monday morning, they have only Browning on the active roster in that role. They have been calling around the free agent market to find another quarterback to add depth during Burrow’s absence. Burrow’s injury was confirmed as a Grade 3 turf toe with ligament damage requiring surgical correction. The injury came at an inopportune time, just as Cincinnati was starting the season 2-0 for the first time since 2018. The next game on the schedule is against the Minnesota Vikings.
For Browning, the challenge now becomes sustaining production across more games under center. He has starter experience, notably in 2023 when Burrow was out for the final seven games. Team officials say they are evaluating both internal options and external free agents to avoid leaving the bench with sparse options.

With Burrow sidelined, Cincinnati now turns to Browning to lead an offense that still boasts Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Browning has prior experience stepping in for Burrow. In 2023, he started seven games after Burrow’s wrist injury and completed more than 70 percent of his passes during that stretch. He threw for 1,936 yards with 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions, while also adding 127 rushing yards and three touchdowns. That run gave the team confidence that he could manage the offense if called upon again.
This year, the Bengals have more depth at running back with Chase Brown complementing the ground game, but the passing attack remains the focal point of their identity. Browning is expected to operate in a similar scheme to Burrow, relying heavily on timing routes and the explosive ability of Chase downfield. The offensive line will face added scrutiny to keep the pocket clean for a quarterback who, unlike Burrow, has limited improvisational experience at this level.
From a team perspective, Burrow’s loss is a major setback. Cincinnati had opened the season 2-0 and looked poised to challenge in the AFC.
