Evaluators have pointed to what one described as “proprioceptive feel,” Mendoza’s ability to sense pressure and locate his outlets even with all five eligible receivers running routes, as one of the unteachable traits he carried over from his time at Indiana, where he led the Hoosiers to a 16-0 record and a national championship. Breer also highlighted Mendoza’s mental resilience, recounting a recent practice in which he answered a pick-six with a completion down the seam on the very next snap, a sign of the kind of short memory that scouts often look for in quarterbacks expected to handle adversity at the next level.
How quickly Mendoza works his way into first-team reps, and eventually a starting role, will likely come down to a combination of his own readiness and how prepared the coaching staff is to build the offense around him. Breer indicated Mendoza has a real chance to begin seeing more first-team snaps over the next couple of weeks, which would mark a meaningful step in his development, even if it stops short of an outright quarterback competition with Cousins.
For fantasy purposes, Mendoza remains a name to file away rather than one to actively roster in most formats. Even in deep bench Superflex leagues, where teams often stash rookie quarterbacks with long-term upside, his path to meaningful snaps in 2026 still runs through Cousins holding the job to open the season. Still, the early buzz around his work ethic and instincts is exactly the kind of foundation that makes a rookie quarterback worth monitoring closely as the summer progresses and the Raiders continue shaping their plan at the position.
