Stefon Diggs Signs With Commanders
The Washington Commanders officially signed veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs on Thursday, finally cementing him as their WR2 opposite Terry McLaurin. The one-year deal, worth up to $12 million, brings the four-time Pro Bowler home to the DMV after he was released by the New England Patriots in a cost-saving move this spring. Diggs led New England with 1,013 yards and four touchdowns on 85 catches in 2025, and he’s expected to work primarily out of the slot and underneath in Washington, an area of the field the Commanders lacked a true weapon for a year ago.
While Diggs should see substantial volume in 2026, McLaurin is still set up for a big year of his own. After a lost 2025 season, during which he battled a quad injury that limited him to a career-low 10 games, McLaurin is looking to replicate his 2024 campaign, when he caught 82 passes for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns playing alongside a healthy Jayden Daniels. Even in his shortened 2025 season, McLaurin’s underlying efficiency metrics remained elite, ranking among the league’s best in yards per route run and first downs per route run, evidence that his down year was largely a product of missed games and offensive dysfunction rather than a decline in ability.
The coordinator change from Kliff Kingsbury to David Blough should also benefit McLaurin. Kingsbury was known for deploying him almost exclusively as a boundary receiver, limiting his versatility within the formation. Blough has been direct about his plans for a different approach. “This thing’s going to be built around how do we get Terry 10 targets a game,” Blough said this offseason, “and get him explosive receptions after explosive receptions to kind of flip the field.” That volume would be unprecedented for McLaurin, who has topped 10 targets in a game only 21 times across 107 career contests, but even a more modest step toward that number, combined with more varied usage across the formation and out of the slot, represents real added opportunity.
Fantasy Impact
McLaurin remains the unquestioned WR1 in this offense, and Diggs’ arrival should only help by drawing coverage away from him rather than competing for the same targets. With both McLaurin and Daniels healthy, and a coordinator publicly committed to featuring him more aggressively, McLaurin is in strong position to return to the top tier of fantasy receivers in 2026.
