Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz has said the door remains open for a reunion, but the team has also made clear it wants to give its younger receivers, including Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston, room to develop. That dynamic has left Allen watching from the outside as camps approach, with no clear resolution yet in sight.
Drafted in the third round out of California back in 2013, Allen has built a long, productive career, but one with limited postseason opportunities. That history likely factors into how he’s approaching this free agency, with a shot at a genuine playoff contender carrying real weight in his decision.
Allen’s 2025 season, spent back in Los Angeles after a one-year detour with the Chicago Bears, produced modest but respectable numbers: 81 catches for 777 yards and four touchdowns across 17 games. It marked the lowest per-game fantasy output of his career, a signal that his role, even in a make-or-break contract year, has shifted toward more of a complementary piece than a true focal point of a passing game.
Even without a landing spot yet, Allen’s track record of reliable, veteran production makes him a name worth monitoring as camps open. If he signs with a team that offers a real role in the passing game, he still profiles as a low-cost, late-round option capable of outperforming his draft slot in fantasy formats.
