The Atlanta Falcons are planning to release wide receiver Darnell Mooney, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Thursday, ending a two-year run that began with promise and finished well short of expectations. Mooney was set to carry an $18.4 million cap charge in 2026 with no guaranteed money remaining on his deal. The release saves Atlanta $7.4 million in immediate cap relief, with the possibility of saving more than $11 million if the team designates him as a post-June 1 cut.
Mooney, 28, finished the 2025 season with 32 receptions for 443 yards and one touchdown on 72 targets in 15 games, the lowest yardage total of his six-year career and a sharp decline from the production that made him an appealing free-agent signing two years ago. His struggles were compounded by a collarbone injury suffered on the first day of training camp that multiple reports indicate affected him throughout the entire season. He never appeared fully healthy and never posted a single game with more than 74 receiving yards.
The contrast with his first year in Atlanta was stark. In 2024, Mooney caught 64 passes for 992 yards and a career-high five touchdowns, playing as a legitimate complement to Drake London in the Falcons’ passing game. His yards-per-reception average across the last three seasons, 13.4 in 2023, 15.5 in 2024, and 13.8 in 2025, suggests his underlying efficiency has remained intact even as volume and health have fluctuated.
Mooney signed a three-year, $39 million deal with Atlanta in March 2024 after playing out his contract with the Chicago Bears, where he posted his only 1,000-yard season in 2021 with 81 receptions for 1,055 yards. The release is the second major financial move by Atlanta’s new front office this offseason, following the announcement of quarterback Kirk Cousins’s release.
For the Falcons, the move exposes a significant receiver need behind London, who is approaching extension talks and remains the team’s only established pass-catcher under contract. For Mooney, a healthy spring could help reset his market value. His speed and field-stretching ability have consistently drawn targets in multiple offenses, and at 28, he enters free agency as a lower-cost depth option with legitimate upside for the right team and system.

He thrives when an offense uses him to create space and punish single coverage over the top. A pass-heavy offense with a quarterback who can push the ball downfield, think a Drake Maye in New England, a Lamar Jackson in Baltimore, or a Cam Ward in Tennessee if the Titans miss on bigger names, could unlock a bounce-back season with meaningful WR3 or flex upside in PPR formats. The Giants have also been connected to Mooney as a low-cost addition, and with Jaxson Dart developing under center, a full season of healthy Mooney in a featured role is not an unrealistic projection.
The risk is real. If he lands on a run-heavy team or a crowded depth chart, his target floor evaporates quickly.
