Speaking after Wednesday’s practice, Maye explained that he needs to keep his focus on working through progressions but also make sure the team’s top wide receiver gets consistent opportunities. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels added that Diggs has not asked for more targets and has handled his role without complaint. McDaniels said the offense is built to find the open man and emphasized that Diggs remains central to their plans.
Through two games, Diggs has been active but not yet explosive. He leads the team with 12 targets and 10 receptions, totaling 89 yards. While the production has been steady, he has yet to reach the end zone. Maye said improving timing with Diggs is a priority as the season develops.
Maye, now in his second season, is off to a strong start. In Week 2, he completed 19 of 23 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns in a road win over the Miami Dolphins. He also ran for a score. The efficient performance showed progress in command of the offense, with passes spread across multiple receivers. Diggs caught six passes in that game but did not break a long gain.
The Steelers defense has shown strength up front, creating pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Their secondary has given up plays, leaving room for wideouts to produce when pass protection holds. That dynamic sets the stage for Diggs to play a key role if Maye can deliver him the ball in rhythm.
New England’s offense has leaned on a balanced approach. Rhamondre Stevenson has handled the bulk of the carries, while rookie Ja’Lynn Polk and veteran Kendrick Bourne have provided additional targets in the passing game. Tight end Hunter Henry has also been involved. Diggs, however, remains the most established option and is expected to be featured heavily against the Steelers.
McDaniels said the coaching staff continues to simplify reads for Maye and adjust formations to highlight Diggs’ strengths. That could mean more quick routes to get the ball into Diggs’ hands early, as well as designed shots downfield. The Patriots believe that steady involvement will keep defenses honest and open opportunities for others in the offense.
With preparation underway, the focus remains on execution. Maye is looking to build on his early success while strengthening his connection with Diggs. The Patriots will finalize their game plan later this week, but all signs point to Diggs being a focal point in their first home game of the season.
