Defensive Rookie of the Year Odds 2018

Defensive ROTL Odds 2018

In the NFL, offensive rookies tend to see more of the media spotlight, but in terms of snap counts, defensive players are often getting more playing time in their first season. Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore, and last years 2017 defensive rookie of the year was arguably a major reason why the Saints made the playoffs last season. Lattimore had 52 tackles, 5 INTs, one of which he returned for a touchdown. A defensive rookie that can start in his first season can become an impact player and make a world of difference to a defensive unit. Even a player who only subs in on a rotation can still find themselves making huge plays at the biggest moment of a key game. Nobody knows that better than Eagles 2017 first round pick Derek Barnett, who had the foresight to quickly jump on the Tom Brady Fumble in Super Bowl 52. Barnett coming away with the Brady fumble lead to the Eagles victory.

Defensive players haven’t taken over Fantasy Football just yet, but many leagues are slowly adopting the format. IDP (Individual Defensive Players) fantasy leagues open up a new element to the game we know and love. The following defensive rookie of the year odds can be found on online. Check out a rating guide of the top betting sites before placing some action on these NFL odds. As for the odds themselves, fantasy IDP owners can get a glimpse into what the sports betting community thinks about this year’s crop of defensive players. Drafting a stud IDP rookie, depending on your scoring format, could have a major impact on your chances of making the playoffs in your Fantasy Football league.

As a long time Dynasty IDP player, the following are my thoughts on which defensive rookie could win the award in 2018.

VITA VEA  +2000

History of the Defensive ROTY

  • 2010 Ndamukong Suh Detroit Lions DT
  • 2011 Von Miller Denver Broncos LB
  • 2012 Luke Kuechly Carolina Panthers LB
  • 2013 Sheldon Richardson New York Jets DE
  • 2014 Aaron Donald St. Louis Rams DT
  • 2015 Marcus Peters Kansas City Chiefs CB
  • 2016 Joey Bosa San Diego Chargers DE
  • 2017 Marshon Lattimore New Orleans Saints CB

From 2000 to 2012, 11 of the 13 defensive rookie award winners were linebackers. However, since that time, the last linebacker to win the award was Luke Kuechly in 2012. One could argue that the total number of tackles you make doesn’t justify the rights to being the winner anymore. Having two corners win in the last three seasons shows how the Defensive rookie of the year award has changed in the NFL, adapting to a very heavy passing league.

My Pick:  Defensive ROTY

Cleveland Browns Corner, Denzel Ward, has a tall order in his first season in the NFL. Not only is he going to be asked to step in and start right away, but he’ll likely be covering division rival Antonio Brown twice a year. As much as I like Ward as being an impact player for the Browns this season, and the trend of Corners earning more respect for the defensive award in general, I think Ward will be my runnerup.

Rashaan Evans and Mike VrabelMy pick for the 2018 Defensive rookie of the year award winner is LB Rashaan Evans from the Titans. I have become a big fan of Mike Vrabel, and I think his coaching style will bring out the best in Evans. The 2017 first round Linebacker has already stated that Vrabel’s coaching has been intense, but that drive and attention to detail should make a difference in Evans first season.

The Titans 2018 schedule features defensive matchups against running backs Ezekiel Elliott, Saquon Barkley, Melvin Gordon and Leonard Fournette (twice). Is it any wonder the team invested draft stock into beefing up their linebacker unit with Evans and defensive front with 2nd round pick Harold Landry.

Rashaan Evans at +1800 would be a nice payout if you were also interested in placing a wager for the season.
