Daily Fantasy Optimal Plays: Conference Championships

Fantasy FootballWell, this is it. The Conference Championships will mark the final week of daily NFL action for most sites. There is no better time than now to get that last fantasy football fix of the year. There is sure to be some serious overlay as we only have a player pool of four teams to choose from, but that won’t stop the fun. While there are so many great options to choose from, the goal this week is to go with some off-the-board choices. As we have seen the last few weeks with players like Legarrette Blount and Alex Smith, some of the lesser chosen players can be the key to victory.

Quarterback: Colin Kaepernick will be my choice this week. Kap is the cheapest starter at the positions this week and offers the additional rushing yard upside. While the match-up isn’t great against the Seahawks defense, I would prefer to roll the dice on the upside with Kaepernick, rather than pay-up for the other quarterbacks and get let down as we have seen the last couple of weeks with guys like Drew Brees and Tom Brady.

Running Backs: Frank Gore is the value play at running back this week. Again, it’s a tough match-up against the Seattle defense, but he has fared well against them in the past few meetings and he is the cheapest starting RB play this week. I also like Knowshon Moreno against the Patriots. As always, you can take one or two of the Patriots running backs, but their prices have gone up and even though Legarrette Blount has been the hot hand lately, you just never really know with Belichick…

Wide Receivers: Because of the match-ups, I think it is safe to say to load up on Patriots and Broncos receivers this week. I will lean toward the Patriots though, as they are really only using Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola, which both can be rostered this week without paying a ridiculous price. I think the Pats will try and throw a bit more with CB Chris Harris out since the Broncos secondary could be a more vulnerable. If you are looking for a “punt” option for a tournament play, Seattle’s Doug Baldwin might not be a bad play.

Tight Ends: There are really only two reliable options this week in Julius Thomas and Vernon Davis. Both have been pretty steady as far as productions goes. You can always pair them up with your starting QB if you go with Colin Kaepernick or Peyton Manning, or depending on the rules of the site you play on, it might not be a bad play to start them both.

Kickers: I’m really feeling Phil Dawson and Steven Hauschka this week, as we could see this game turn into a battle of field goals. They are also the two cheapest kickers available this week, which is typically the correct strategy anyway.

Defense/Special Teams: I REALLY like the San Francisco 49ers this week. We saw last week how the Seahawks seem to struggle with the Saints defense, which is just average. It will be interesting to see how they can they produce against one of the NFL’s top defenses in crunch time.
