Colin Kaepernick: Fantasy Man Crush

Colin Kaepernick Fantasy 2013

After taking over for injured 49ers QB Alex Smith, Colin Kaepernick took the fantasy world by storm. Fresh off the bench Kaepernick combined for 2,029 total yards – 304 rushing – while scoring 13 total touchdowns over the final eight weeks of the regular season.

Fresh off the bench, Kaepernick combined for 2,029 total yards – 304 rushing – while scoring 13 total touchdowns over the final eight weeks of the regular season.

His dynamic play was matched by his efficiency, as he turned the ball over only three times through the air on 218 passing attempts.

Kaepernick continued his effectiveness during the 49ers run to the Super Bowl, scoring seven total touchdowns in three post-season starts.

As a dual-threat quarterback with the potential to rush for 100 yards on any given night, there is (understandably) an enormous amount of hype surrounding Kaepernick heading into the 2013 fantasy football season.

Though he’s only started seven career regular season games, Kaepernick has been consistently selected amongst the Top-5 Overall quarterbacks in mock drafts, sometimes ahead of marquee gunslingers like Matt Ryan and Tom Brady.

Given his short resume but high upside, just where should Kaepernick be drafted in 2013?

Without a doubt, Kaepernick is an intriguing fantasy player. Surrounded by a strong 49ers receiving corps that features Michael Crabtree, Vernon Davis, and new addition Anquan Boldin, Kaepernick will be able to spread the ball around while keeping defenses on their toes with his big-play rushing ability.

Compared to quarterbacks like Eli Manning and Matt Schaub, who have struggled with consistency from year-to-year, Kaepernick is a sexy pick.

However, the consistent high-end production of passers like Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, and Matt Ryan push Kaepernick down to the second tier of starting fantasy quarterbacks in 2013.

Because he plays on a dominant 49ers team that relies on a run-first attack, Kaepernick’s passing attempts will be limited, as they were in 2012. He only attempted 30-or-more passes twice in 2012, and threw for more than 250 yards only once (276). Compare that to the similarly skilled Cam Newton, who attempted 30+ passes in half of his 16 starts and threw three 300+ yard games.

Kaepernick’s rushing totals will help him keep pace with the yardage marks of the NFL’s best pocket passers, but there is limited potential for a 4,000 yard passing season.

More to that point, with a backfield sporting star running back Frank Gore, as well as up-and-comers Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James, there may be a cap on the number of goal line rushing attempts Kaepernick is allowed due to fear of injury.

This may especially be true later in the season if the 49ers have clinched a post-season berth, which doesn’t bode well for fantasy football owners competing in playoff match-ups.

Still, there is lots of upside with Kaepernick, and if you decide to choose him as your starting quarterback in 2013, you’re likely to be rewarded with reliable production.

Just make certain that you’re not selecting him if Tom Brady – and his 73 passing touchdowns over the past two seasons – is still on the board.

Tier 1: Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Matt Ryan
Tier 2: Colin Kaepernick, Andrew Luck, Cam Newton, Tony Romo, Matthew Stafford
