San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan believes star RB Christian McCaffrey is ready to reestablish himself as one of the league’s top offensive weapons in 2025. McCaffrey, who was limited to just four games last season, has looked sharp throughout the offseason and training camp.

“He came in healthy this year. He had a hell of an offseason, he’s had a hell of a training camp, and I believe that’s going to lead to a hell of a year,” Shanahan told reporters.

2024 Setbacks

McCaffrey entered last season battling Achilles tendinitis in both legs, which slowed his preparation and delayed his ramp-up. Once he returned, his year was cut short by a PCL sprain in his right knee. The injuries forced him to miss the majority of the campaign, leaving the 49ers without their most dynamic offensive player for a crucial stretch of the season.

Fresh Start in 2025

Now 29 years old, McCaffrey is looking to prove that he still belongs among the elite running backs in the NFL. Reports out of camp suggest he has regained his trademark explosiveness, vision, and versatility. Healthy for the first time in over a year, he has been a full participant in practices and appears ready to take on a significant workload once again. For Shanahan, McCaffrey’s ability to contribute in multiple phases of the offense remains invaluable.

Risk vs. Reward in Fantasy Football

Fantasy football managers face a familiar dilemma with McCaffrey: his talent is undeniable, but his injury history cannot be ignored. Even with the risks, he continues to be one of the rare backs capable of producing league-winning numbers when healthy. His current draft price in the late first round reflects both the uncertainty surrounding his durability and the enormous upside he brings if he can stay on the field.

If McCaffrey holds up physically, he could easily be a league winner in 2025.
