[the_ad id=”105842″]Chris Godwin of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is making progress in his recovery from a dislocated ankle suffered in Week 7 of last season. He has returned to practice on a limited basis. The Buccaneers remain cautious about rushing him back. Sources familiar with the team believe that Godwin’s return in Week 3 against the New York Jets is unlikely; however, they see Week 4 against the Philadelphia Eagles as a far more realistic target for his first game back.
Godwin avoided being placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list to begin the 2025 season, which means he may return at any time once cleared. Despite that, the limited-practice status suggests he is not yet at full capacity.
Also affecting Tampa Bay’s receiving corps is rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, who is contributing in Godwin’s absence. Egbuka has posted strong numbers through the first two games, but missed practice this past Wednesday with hip and groin issues. He remains part of the plan moving forward, although it’ll be interesting how targets are disrupted amongst the receivers when Godwin is back.
The Buccaneers enter Week 3 with a 2-0 record. They will host the Jets on September 21 at Raymond James Stadium.
Returning Godwin would add depth and veteran presence to Tampa Bay’s passing offense. He is expected to play outside receiver roles and work alongside players like Mike Evans and Emeka Egbuka. The hope is that his involvement will help balance the receiving game and provide more matchup flexibility for the head coach and the offensive coordinator.
Medical clearance remains pending. If he is not ready by Week 4, the team may continue easing him in rather than pushing for large snap counts immediately.
