Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Cecil Shorts is expected to miss several weeks after being forced from practice on Friday. The Jaguars expect Shorts to be ready for the start of the season but his progress will be monitored.
The Jag’s aren’t exactly a prime target for fantasy options outside of Toby Gerhart, although you would think the team would like to have their passing game in rhythm prior to the start of the season. With Shorts missing time the rest of the young WR group will see more snaps, but having a leader amongst the group does accelerate the learning curve.
Offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch confirmed Toby Gerhart will be the “workhorse” and play all three downs for the rebuilding Jaguars. Sounds great for fantasy owners targeting the ex-Viking in the mid rounds of their drafts, yet one has to wonder about opposing defenses stacking the box with 8-man-fronts. If Shorts is going to miss training camp and the team can’t fast track the handful of rookie WR’s they brought in, Gerhart may see all three downs, just not a lot of first downs. The key to any great rushing attack is balance, and if the Jaguars can’t move the chains Gerhart might become a frustrating fantasy starter.
