[the_ad id=”105842″]The New York Jets placed running back Braelon Allen on injured reserve Thursday after he suffered a knee injury during Monday night’s loss to the Miami Dolphins. Head coach Aaron Glenn announced Friday that Allen will miss eight to twelve weeks with an MCL sprain.
Allen sustained the injury while returning a kickoff late in the second quarter of the Jets’ 27-21 defeat in Miami. He was quickly ruled out and did not return to the game. The second-year back had rushed four times for 26 yards before the injury occurred.
Glenn confirmed Allen faces a decision between surgery and rehabilitation. Either path requires the same recovery timeline. The coach emphasized the choice belongs to the player and his representatives.
“There are two different ways he can go about it,” Glenn said Friday. “He could actually rehab this or he could have surgery and get it cleaned up. But the rehab time will be exactly the same. That will be a decision him and his agent will have to make. I’m not making that decision for him.”
The timeline places Allen’s earliest possible return in early December for Week 13 against the Atlanta Falcons. If recovery extends to twelve weeks, he may not return until Week 17. The Jets would then need to determine whether activating him makes sense for the season’s final games. The Jets moved quickly to address the roster void. They signed veteran running back Khalil Herbert from the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad on Thursday. Herbert brings 1,905 career rushing yards and nine touchdowns from four NFL seasons, primarily with the Chicago Bears.
Isaiah Davis will assume expanded duties behind starter Breece Hall. The second-year back from South Dakota State averaged 5.8 yards per carry in limited work during his rookie campaign. Davis now steps into the primary backup role vacated by Allen. Kene Nwangwu remains sidelined with a hamstring injury that has kept him out for three consecutive games. His status for Sunday’s home game against the Dallas Cowboys remains uncertain. Glenn indicated Nwangwu will be a game-time decision.
The injury compounds challenges for the winless Jets. Allen had established himself as a key contributor with 76 rushing yards and one touchdown through four games. His physical running style complemented Hall’s versatility in the backfield.
Allen was drafted in the fourth round of the 2024 draft out of Wisconsin. At 21 years old, he became one of the youngest players in NFL history after graduating high school in three years. He rushed for 334 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie while appearing in all 17 games.
The Jets face the Cowboys on Sunday at MetLife Stadium seeking their first victory of the season. Offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand confirmed Hall will see increased touches with Herbert working into the rotation.
