Ameer Abdullah’s Dynasty Value Looks to Free Fall

Lions to Target RB

There was optimism this season that Ameer Abdullah could have a potential “come back player of the year” type season for the Detroit Lions after suffering a Lisfranc injury when he hurt his foot last season. The Lions 2nd round pick (54th overall) from the 2015 NFL Draft showed flashes in his rookie season but hasn’t emerged as the player the team had hoped.

On Tuesday, Lions GM Bob Quinn hinted that the team will target an RB in the upcoming NFL Draft or through free agency.

“I think our running backs, they didn’t perform as good as everyone thought,” Quinn said. “Will we add someone? Probably, to that room. Absolutely.”

Dynasty Impact:

Ameer Abdullah's Dynasty ValueAbdullah was a late first round pick in many Dynasty rookie drafts in 2015. His stock value had a mini-surge last year when some Dynasty owners invested in the potential return from injury narrative, but as it seems his value will continue to plummet after news of the team’s obvious plans to target an RB in the offseason. At this point, your best strategy is to hold on to Abdullah in hope that he is traded or cut in the offseason. The Lions aren’t financial stuck to the three-year RB and could release him if they feel they have completed the upgrade to the teams RB position.

Prediction: With all the recent success of rookie running backs making immediate impacts in their first season, and with the loaded 2018 RB draft class, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Lions used their 20th overall pick on an RB this season. I also think they add a cheap veteran RB through free agency. To go one step further, I expect the team to try to trade Abdullah and would also not be surprised to see them cut him. The team seems to prefer Theo Riddick, who is signed for two more seasons and letting Abdullah walk would save $1M on the Lions bloated salary cap, while only taking on a minor cap hit of $320K.
