5 Offseason DFS Tips As We Count Down To The NFL Sesason

Deshaun Watson

The NFL offseason is long and painful; luckily, we have less than 80 days until the season opener between the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs.

As a huge fan of daily fantasy sports, I try my luck in all sports throughout the year, and I can honestly say MLB DFS is insanely difficult. I’m counting down the days until I can once again stack a quarterback and wide receiver in a game I’m excited to watch. Most of the best DFS sites have optimizers or stacking tools to help you throughout the season, but today, I thought I would recap my thoughts from my last year, a somewhat successful DFS NFL Season.

Find The Right Contest For You

Years back, I played in massive GPP tournaments that allowed 150 max entries and found little luck. This is the equivalent of playing the lotto. A few years back, I came 29th overall in a $3 GPP and one $800. That’s pretty cool, but there were 290,000 people in the contest.

Let that sink in.

I built a lineup that scored more fantasy points than 289,971 people, and I didn’t even win $1,000. GPPs are fun if you have an insane bankroll, but it’s really not worth your time.

Instead, gauge your level of success. What do you consider a good day? Does doubling your money sound like a good day? Maybe a couple of hundred dollars. If this feels more your level, look into 50/50s or cash games, as they are known. Personally, I love multipliers. There is a DraftKings $27 contest with less than 2500 people that pays the top 50 to 60 people $1,000. That, to me, is a fun game.

Hitting DraftKings Player Bonuses Should Be The Goal

  • 300+ Yard Passing Game +3 Pts
  • 100+ Yard Rushing Game +3 Pts
  • 100+ Receiving Yard Game +3 Pts

There are lots of casual DFS players who don’t even know the scoring and forget about scoring bonuses. When building your lineup, you should be asking yourself, does this player have a chance to get enough yards to hit the bonus? When the margins are razor-thin, you need every advantage you can get.

This is why I rarely build a lineup with a cheap quarterback. Yes I understand the huge savings you get going with a less expensive QB, and I understand that elite QBs are usually chalk, but I don’t care.

I had more success once I started looking at players with the bonus in mind.

Save The Best For Last

We’ve all been there. You’re having a great day as your players have performed well, and you’re in the top 5 to 10% of the slate, but you only have one player left playing in the late afternoon games. This makes for a very frustrating day. Your one player now has to have the game of their life to not only keep you alive but help you move up the ladder.

If you want to maximize your chances and keep Sunday’s fun, have at least two players going for the afternoon slate.

Be Bold With Defenses

I have never paid up for a DFS defense and thought, that was totally worth it. It’s so easy for a Defense to underperform, to the point I would much rather gamble with a random bottom feeder that no one will own. The New York Giants were +12 in turnover differential last year, while the Chicago Bears, as bad as they were, had 22 interceptions last season. Dig deeper when picking a defense, don’t let their record be the deciding factor. You can save a lot of DFS bucks if you’re willing to take a chance on a bottom-dweller team.

The Bring Back A Player(s) is an Absolute Must

You don’t want to have players on a great team that kick the crap out of their opponent because when the score is out of reach, they just run the ball and drain the clock. The perfect situation is a back-and-forth shoot-out. So when you look at the NFL schedule, think about which game will get out of hand and hit the Over. You want a 33-30 type game or higher.

I have had my biggest wins in random games where everyone thought the defenses were going to keep things tight, but it was an all-out barnburner. If you feel that the Browns vs. Cardinals will be a shoot-out, stack both sides.
