Update- Jerick McKinnon’s MRI showed “just a muscle strain.”

49ers rumorsESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting San Francisco 49ers beat writer Jerick McKinnon (knee) will undergo an MRI on his right knee for an undisclosed injury suffered at Sunday’s practice. This could be devastating news for the 49ers and McKinnon’s fantasy football owners alike. The worst case scenario would be losing him for the 2018 season in its entirety a la Derrius Guice. The best case, well, McKinnon could just be getting the MRI as a precaution. Either way, I don’t expect to see a lot of Jerick McKinnon in preseason action. A high-end RB2 with RB1 upside who holds the second round ADP across all formats, if McKinnon is lost for the year, tremendous fantasy implications would certainly follow.

However, McKinnon wasn’t the only injury to the 49ers offense. Starting TE George Kittle (shoulder) and RB2 Matt Brieda (shoulder) both succumbed to shoulder injuries in the preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys and are will reportedly remain out for the duration of the person. Though on a positive note, both potential impact players are expected to be ready for Week 1. Since the 49ers top two running backs could possibly be sidelined for an extended period, I believe they will have to bring in someone from the street — Adrian Peterson or Orleans Darkwa — or acquire one via trade — Kenneth Dixon or Mike Gillislee. And although he recently retired, it wouldn’t surprise me if the 49ers or even the Redskins are buzzing Murray’s cell phone as we speak. As far as whats left on the San Francisco RB depth chart, Joe Williams (RB3), Raheem Mostert (RB4) and Jeremy McNichols (RB5), a trio of unproven talent, are poised to see increased reps in the interim.
