NFL 2010 Predictions: 3 Rookies to Draft and Avoid

As the NFL Preseason finally looks closer to being over, the predictions can now be made. Over the next week or so, the Gridiron Experts team will make some predictions to the season, here is Christopher Gabel’s thoughts on this years Fantasy Rookie class

3 Rookies to take under consideration

Dez Bryant – This guy’s career is already off to one peculiar start, even for a receiver. He missed his entire senior season in Stillwater, a GM asked him if his mother was a hooker, he signed before every other first round pick only to raise a stink about the tamest hazing ritual we’ve ever heard, and as a result things are supposed to be tense between him and Roy Williams. Still, he was one of the more talented players in the draft, and any discussion of him being a “head case” seemed completely manufactured by uptight, overly-conservative NFL suits. It’s almost certain he’ll be under-estimated in fantasy drafts.

Jahvid Best – Fallen under the radar a tad due to Spiller going to Buffalo, but Best is arguably the better back and the Lions will actually be less reliant on him than the Bills on Spiller. Since CJ Spiller isn’t Jones-Drew or Chris Johnson, I’m not a huge fan of the hand he’s been dealt. …Continue reading NFL 2010 Predictions: 3 Rookies to Draft and Avoid

Sam Bradford Signs For $78 Million, 50 In The Bank.

The St.Louis Rams got their future at quarterback signed on Friday night. Sam Bradford has agreed to a six-year, $78 million contract that reportedly has $50 million guaranteed according to multiple reports. The deal has a max value of $86 million.

Last year, the Detroit Lions gave No. 1 overall pick Matthew Stafford a six-year deal that included $41.7 million in guaranteed money….Can anyone say “Lockout”. The rookie contacts are a major problem in the NFL and inflation is not the excuse.

Bradford threw for 4,721 yards and 50 TDs with just eight interceptions. The newest Ram also beat out fellow 2010 draft picks Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow to win the Heisman Trophy.

NFC West Fantasy Football Stock Market

NFC West Fantasy Football Stock Market
This series of articles focuses on how the new breed of talent from the NFL draft plans to affect overall fantasy football player value. Continuing with our stock market report, Gridiron Experts takes a look at the NFC West.
Previous Articles: NFC EAST | AFC EAST | NFC SOUTH | AFC SOUTH

*NFC West: Finally Gridiron Experts can talk shop, as the last two divisions were heavy on Defense.  Each team may not have added instant on the field play-makers, but the sleeper factor is definitely there. Teams like the 49er’s seemed quiet with their crop of players, but the talent they did add help the fantasy players you’re holding.

St.Louis Rams

Mardy Gilyard WR 5″11 187 lbs.

The Rams may have set in stone their future by selecting Sam Bradford first overall,  but the fantasy football water cooler chat starts with a little guy named Mardy Gilyard. Personally, there were two wide receiver sleepers I had an eye on, and they both ended up in this division.

Gilyard has blazing speed and will step into kick and punt returning duties immediately.  With back to back 11 touchdown seasons at the university of Cincinnati, the Rams need to figure out a way to use this deadly after-the-catch weapon in their offense ASAP. My guess is we could see a learning curve type season for Gilyard, where simple plays like wide receiver screens will be put into action just until he can run pro style routes. Gilyard had a shaking senior bowl, which may have dropped his draft value, but the Rams have high hopes for this little guy.

Opportunity: WR2
Stock Value: High – If you’re fantasy league counts individual players for KR/PR yards than circle this guy now. With a …Continue reading NFC West Fantasy Football Stock Market

St. Louis Rams Select Sam Bradford 1st overall

St. Louis Rams Select Sam Bradford 1st overall

Smart pick, this team has a lot of holes but none bigger than the quarterback position. Bradford has the skills to be a star but will have an uphill battle in St.Louis. Bradford shows excellent accuracy with his throws, but will need more zip on intermediate and downfield routes. Time will make this kid the star.

Gridiron Experts Mock Draft 2.0

Gridiron Experts Mock Draft 2.0

1. QB- Sam Bradford, Oklahoma.

A future quarterback that can slowly learn and one day lead the Rams to many winning seasons. Grooming of a guy that can be the future for the Rams has more long-term value than drafting an instant starter like Suh. The Rams do need to find a “In the mean time” QB that can play and teach their huge investment. Trading for a player like Jason Campbell or Mike Vick could add a solid 8 game starter, before throwing the kid into the fire mid-season.

2. OT- Russell Okung, Oklahoma State.

The Lions drafted their future quarterback last year (M.Stafford), now they need to keep him healthy. Drafting Okung at 2 allows the offense to grow and gives their QB more time in the pocket.

3. DT- Ndamukong Suh, Nebraska.

Best player available. We think Suh should go first overall, but with the Rams QB problems and the Lions upgrading their defensive line through free agency, the Buc’s are laughing here at pick 3. Suh adds the motor, size, and youth that could fire up any front four.

4. OT -Trent Williams, Oklahoma.

Age is taking its toll on the Redskins offensive line. The new strategy will be to get back to a running game and give McNabb time to throw the deep ball. Maybe the only key left to the Redskins bounce back season is a left tackle.

5. DT- Gerald McCoy, Oklahoma.

The Chiefs can’t invest in Thomas Jones and not think that an upgrade to the offensive line doesn’t need to happen. But, with McCoy slipping on our board the chiefs have to take the best player available. McCoy at 5 is a steal.

6. SS-Eric Berry, Tennessee.

Eric Berry is the top safety in this year’s draft class, and a white knight as far as the message boards and fan bases go around the NFL. People love this guy, and the Seahawks would be stupid to let him slip by.

7. WR- Dez Bryant, Oklahoma St.

While receivers are not always the safest first round selection, the Browns are in need of adding talent to this position. Bryant is a fairly safe here pick at 7 and would have very little competition heading into training camp. The future signal caller might be found in the later rounds of the draft or even next year for that matter.  …Continue reading Gridiron Experts Mock Draft 2.0

Gridiron Experts Mock Draft 1.0

Gridiron Experts MOCK DRAFT

1. QB- Sam Bradford, Oklahoma.

The Rams need a future leader in the quarterback position who they can build the team around. If 2010 goes the way most are predicting for the Rams (another pitiful season), then at least fans can get excited about the grooming of a guy who could be the next Manning or Roethlisberger…no guarantees that will ever happen, but hope is a powerful tool and ticket sales need to be considered.

2.  DT- Ndamukong Suh, Nebraska.

The offseason of overspending is a good thing for the Lions. Their goal in repairing a pathetic defense is the right step towards a winning season. Suh adds the motor, size, and youth that could fire up the Lions front four. Having to face A. Peterson twice a year is setting off alarms all over the Detroit area, but with Suh and a few new veterans added, the easy yards become more difficult.

3. DT- Gerald McCoy, Oklahoma.

Most if not all of the teams at the top are looking for size and strength to add to either the offensive or defensive line. Some may find this strange, but the big uglies are where the game is won or lost. 3rd and short is a lot easier with the right monster lineman in place. McCoy is a combination of speed and size, which is rare. The Buccaneers can’t ignore glaring needs.

4. OT- Russell Okung, Oklahoma State.

Age is taking it’s toll on the Redskins offensive line. The new strategy will be to get back to a running game that works. We expect to see a young RB added in maybe the second or third round for the Skins, who will be complemented by the addition of a potential Pro Bowl offensive tackle here at pick 4.

5. OT -Trent Williams, Oklahoma.

Our guess is that the interview in which new RB Thomas Jones had with the Chiefs went as following: “I’ll sign with you guys, but I want the ball, and holes to run through”.

The Chiefs can’t invest in a 30 year old RB and not think that an upgrade to the offensive line doesn’t need to happen. Kansas City was a pretty good running team last year, but the future at tackle needs to be added. Branden Albert is the only OT that the Chiefs have added in the last decade with a high draft pick. This team needs an upgrade.

6. SS-Eric Berry, Tennessee.

The recent additions to the Seahawks has our confidence in the decision making of the front office ranked right around where we’d put the Raiders these days. But that can all be straightened out with the selection of Eric Berry. Berry is the top safety in this year’s draft, and a white knight  as far as the message boards and fan bases go around the NFL. People love this guy, and the Seahawks would be stupid to let him slip by.

7. WR- Dez Bryant, Oklahoma St.

The Browns are going to be building their team around a strong offensive line and a tough defense. It’s hard to see a QB going to Cleveland this high with all of the offseason movement. The future signal caller might be found in the later rounds of the draft or even next year for that matter. Expect a smash mouth Browns team that will roll up their sleeves and get down and dirty in a tough, run first offense. Saying that, the lack of receiving options for the Browns is a priority, and with Bryant falling to them at pick 7,  an easy …Continue reading Gridiron Experts Mock Draft 1.0

NFL Draft Prospect: Sam Bradford

Written by: Kevin Roberts | Monday, January 4th, 2010 | 3 Comments

Player Profile: Sam Bradford

Like most college quarterbacks with the hype of Sam Bradford, it’s not a question of “if” he’ll be drafted in the first round, more a question of “where”.

Sure, the injuries Bradford sustained this season raise some minor questions about his durability and his immediate health, but are likely temporary hindrances in what appears to be a polished and refined NFL-ready game. After declaring for the Draft, we know for sure where Bradford will be before his name is called in April. Now it’s time to start thinking about where he’ll be after an NFL team calls his name. Here’s a look at the positives and negatives of Bradford’s game as he prepares a transition to the pro stage, followed by a few teams that should be targeting him.

The Good:

Statistically (short of the 2009 season), there are few quarterbacks that match-up with what Bradford did from 2007-2008. Over that span, he led an elite Oklahoma offense by throwing 86 touchdowns through the air, along with nearly 8,000 passing yards. Throw in his mere eight interceptions in each of those two seasons, and Bradford was a near lock to be the top pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Of course, it’s not just all about stats with Bradford. He shows great range on all his passes, while having the accuracy and arm to make every necessary throw at the next level.

His already adequate height and frame will only get bigger and stronger, which will hopefully help him rid of any durability concerns.

The level of competition he faces was regularly at a borderline elite level, and Bradford …Continue reading NFL Draft Prospect: Sam Bradford
