Green Bay Packers at Arizona Cardinals-1.5

Before this article grabs Green Bay fans by the wrists and drags them into the depths of painful, realistic punishment, let’s adore the facts. Green Bay just beat the Arizona Cardinals. They did so handily, 33-7, and after winning seven of their last eight games, there really isn’t much to suggest a first round exit.

If you truly believe that, you’re either a naive Cheesehead from Wisconsin, or you simply don’t follow the NFL.

After seeing the Minnesota Vikings beat the New York Giants and end any chances of the Cardinals obtaining a first round bye, Arizona head coach Ken Wisenhunt “wizened up” (pun intended) and sat all of his offensive starters after less than a quarter of play. What transgressed was the Green Bay Packers (who left their starters in for nearly the entire game) demolishing the Cardinals. Add the soul-pounding victory by Green Bay with it’s other six victories out of it’s last eight games, and you’ve got a confident group of players and coaches on your hands.

But, really, are they that confident?

They’re going back to the same place they just played in less than a week. Only, this time they get the real deal. The Cardinals saw what the Packers are capable of. They saw their offense going to work, how their defense works in it’s 3-4, and what tendencies Mike McCarthy and co.

OMG! That’s Why The Packers Lost

The Buccaneers won for the first time since Nov. 30, 2008, snapping an 11-game losing streak by beating the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. Buccaneers CB Aqib Talib had an interception, and Rodgers was sacked six times in a surprise upset. Every football fan across the country was shocked with the outcome of this game….but we know why the Packers lost.

Who in their right minds can pick up blocks, run passing routes or make tackles when there are girls on the sidelines dressed like this?

This game has been circled on the calendar for a while now, pretty much since Brett signed with the Vikings. Last year, as a member of the New York Jets, Favre didn’t face the Packers, but as soon as he decided to come out of retirement and join the Minnesota Vikings, the immediate focus shifted to when he would return to Green Bay to face his former team and his scorned fans.

While many people are looking at all of the side stories, the real story here is that this is a match-up for first place in the NFC North. As it turns out, the battle at the top of the NFC North is very competitive, and although the Vikings were undefeated before last weeks loss in Pittsburgh, they could essentially be tied with the Packers if they lose for a second straight week.

NFL odds: Packers -3

When the Packers and Vikings met up in Minnesota a few weeks back on Monday Night Football it was a tight game, but the real story of the contest was the Packers offensive line. The Vikings totaled eight sacks overall and defensive end Jared Allen had four on his own.

While the Vikings and Bears are the talk of the town, NFL odds makers like a different team in the NFC North: the Green Bay Packers. Having arguably one of the best offenses in the division (even with Farve back), an improved defense, and excellent coaching, the Packers might be able to make the Lambeau Leap back into first place.

Off-season Transaction

The Packers didn’t make a ton of personnel changes in the off-season but they did make a few tweaks. The biggest change will be at defensive coordinator, where Dom Capers takes over and will employ the 3-4 scheme. Newcomers on the team are critically acclaimed draft picks B.J. Raji (first-round) and Clay Matthews (second-round). Aside from that, the Packers roster is very much status quo.

Favre Will Decide July 30th Do You Still Care?

Favre-portrait-1Favre Will Decide July 30th, Do You Still Care?

Brett Favre told The Associated Press that he’ll give the Vikings an answer on whether or not he’ll play by July 30, the start of training camp. I’m sure the deadline will be pushed back again as Favre’s indecisive off-season has been one long boring “maybe”.

I like Brett Favre, I enjoyed watching him for years with the Packers, but 10 years down the road I hope we don’t remember this on again, off again love affair with playing for the NFL.

I know what you’re thinking, why doesn’t Favre get into coaching, or get a job with ESPN like all the other washed up players do when the time comes? He could be the next John Madden, adding funny jokes in the booth like he did during commercial breaks or during pre-game warm ups. If anyone could add

insight to the quarterback position or tell a great story I’m sure it’s Brett Favre. But the reason why we’ll never see him put on the company tie is simple, he’s old school. Brett Favre wants the ball. He needs to call the shots, read the defenses and throw the deep pass for a score. He is football, and for that I respect him.

For all of the ups and downs that this great NFL Quarterback has had to go through over the years, he deserves one more chance, but you know the old saying: it’s always better to burn out than fade away….unless your name is Favre.

This video is wicked!

green_bay_packersGridiron Experts is randomly picking NFL teams to evaluate their off-season acquisitions. We are predicting their game plan heading into the NFL Draft, using last year’s stats as a guide for improvement.

The post Favre days are among us. Fans have moved on; although still reminiscing the days when number 4 led the NFL, Aaron Rodgers has won over most of the die hard cheese-heads. The Packers had a roller coaster of a season in 2008, with streaks of wins and losses, just toying with the fans for a playoff appearance. Overall, Green Bay ranked above average in many categories on offense and defense, but the glaring stat that stood on it’s own was the rushing defense. The Packers allowed an average of 131 rushing yards per game, and gave up 20 rushing touchdowns. Stats can be distorted, as the Packers do face the Vikings Adrian Peterson twice a year, but when the Detroit Lions are running for 100+ yards on you in both of their games, there are no excuses.

The Packers did nothing in free agency, which is a surprise considering there were a few cheap players that could have helped Green Bay’s run defense. Grady Jackson has bj-rajibeen in the league for 12 seasons and is the size of a truck. Jackson is not an every down player but would have been great on 1st downs, but the Lions signed him early. The Packers need a Defensive Tackle, but could also use a pass rusher to help compliment Aaron Kampman. With the 9th overall pick, the Packers could be in a good position to draft B.J. Raji, although there are rumors that teams might be willing to leap frog up the draft board to grab this unique nose tackle. B.J Raji from Boston College is 6′1″, 335 pounds, and for a big guy he has great speed. Raji has the strength to play in a 3-4 or 4-3 defense, but may be too heavy to play in a single gap scheme. While Raji is tempting, the smarter move might be to move down and gain an extra 2nd round pick, drafting a speed rusher like Everette Brown or Brian Orakpo, while going after a big nose tackle in the second round. Ron Brace who is also from Boston College is a monster nose tackle that could be there in the second round. Gridiron Experts thinks that whatever goes down on draft day, the Packers must address their defensive line. So all you Packer fans hoping for an offensive weapon to come to town, you might want to pop in the game tape against the Vikings from last season, where Purple Jesus nearly ran for 200 yards on you.
