Favre Magic

Favre MNF

This was the first of two, and if we’re lucky, there could be more.

True, Brett Favre turns 40 in a week, the very number that analysts and experts are afraid to say, weary of an old man’s bones breaking mid-sentence, but at the same time can’t help but blurt out with laughter.

Favre is an old dude, and he can still sling it. Even the Favre (and Packer) faithful found it interesting, that even at his new home, with Adrian Peterson backing him up, and a tenacious and relentless Jared Allen getting him the ball back, that Favre looked so good. Flawless, if you will (and even if you won’t). Save for a called back interception from one yard away from the end zone, Favre made no mistakes. He exposed the Packers aging corners. You know, the ones who everyone tags “the best corner duo in the league”.

And he helped destroy the Packers linebackers, forcing them to pile-up the tackles, while his receivers took slants further than they should have, one of them for a score.

In the end, Favre was mostly sitting on the sidelines, pondering over whether or not this Rodgers kid had that “Favre magic” in him, while Brad Childress and co. played it safe, almost giving the game away.

But before that happened, we were being hand-delivered an epic battle. Between the young and the old. Between the praised and the forgotten. The king and the heir. And while the heir (Rodgers, of course) performed remarkably well, especially considering the fact that his line gave up eight sacks, the king still prevailed.

He was in his new home, and despite very little help from his newest partner in crime (Peterson), Favre tossed three scores (and nearly a fourth), 271 yards, and completed over 77 percent of his passes.

Unbelievable Brett Favre

I was flipping between games as this was going on; the Redskins were in roughly in the exact same area of the field and needed the exact same throw to beat the Lions, but fell short. I turned back to see this pass with perfect timing only to form the most incomplete sentence in disbelief, I was an infant for 10 seconds while jumping out of my seat forming words like a caveman trying to describe the amazing play. Only Favre could’ve made that throw.

This was worth all the indecisive pre-season garbage, and Vikings fans will speak of this game for years.

Although, not much love going out to Greg Lewis in this highlight. “Brett Favre did it” the announcer says after watching the replay, how about “nice grab Greg Lewis”, aka Glew in his Eagle days. Lewis has been bounced around the league like a beach ball at a Nickelback concert lately, it’s nice to see him still making catches.

Brett FavreBelieve it or not, Brett Favre may come out of retirement for the second straight season after he asked the Jets to release him last week. Thestandard_wheelchair Vikings are now the team of interest and in talks with number 4 about playing this coming season. Head coach Brad Childress and Favre plan to meet at an undisclosed location later this week to discuss the possibility of renouncing his retirement from the NFL.

I loved watching Brett Favre play for years in Green Bay, but last year was obvious that he doesn’t have the arm to last the whole season. If Brett does play in Minnesota this year, the Vikings need to use him in a much more reserved role, meaning the team needs to continue to run the ball with A. Peterson and use the pass only in key situations, play action, or only 3rd and longs. Farve’s arm fell off at the end of last year and a return is hurting his chance of entering the Hall of Fame, but a team where he’s not asked to do as much might give one last chance for a ring.

Brett FavreFar Favre Away
After frustrations have blown over and any harsh words said about Pro Bowler Brett Favre have been retracted, feelings still seem to be hurt. There’s no doubt that after blowing the month of December and missing the playoffs, some players on the New York Jets would have some resentment towards Brett Favre and his QB play. Favre threw only 2 touchdown passes in their final 5 games, but had 9 gut wrenching interceptions including 3 in a must win game in week 17. Running Back Thomas Jones ran his mouth after the loss, saying Favre was not playing well and needed to come out of the game. His rant was more due to the frustration of the loss, as he quickly back peddled to the media days later, saying he’s got respect for Brett.

Personally, I was glad to see someone finally speak up about Brett Favre’s performance. There’s no doubt that Favre is a hall of fame quarterback, but in the last 2 years this guy has been getting away with murder when it comes to bad games. Thomas Jones was right when he basically said that they should have benched Favre. Benching a quarterback in the NFL is a funny thing; egos are everything, and at times it almost seems like a coach would rather let his guy play through the problems than deal with the media, even if it costs him a win.

Brett Favre is now saying that he is leaning towards retirement telling the New York Jets to ‘look in different direction’.

Did Favre escape the Madden Curse?

Category : Around the League, Fantasy Football

For years now, the Madden curse has been a fantasy nightmare for keeper leagues, and even for people who don’t believe in it. I remember being at a fantasy draft and the guy who had Shawn Alexander said that it wouldn’t affect him. “Alexander is too good of an RB” he said-lol. Shawn Alexander isn’t even on a team this year!
Brett Favre is a different story though; can he escape the Madden curse? He’s wearing a Green Bay jersey on the cover, not a NYJ jersey, so does this mean Green Bay gets the curse? (technicality ??) I know I’m taking the good out of having Brett Favre back in football, but hey, my Dad is a die hard Packers fan and will pout all year over the loss of his favorite player.

Fantasy players that will be affected from the Favre deal: (value)
QB- Brett Favre
(even). Big game here and there, but the Pats and other AFC opponents are no walk in the park.
RB-Thomas Jones (somewhat increased value). The NYJ’s biggest problem in the past few years was that they couldn’t stretch the field. With Favre firing the ball, the defenders can’t pinch up and will have to play honest. This will allow T. Jones the chance to do some damage, and will also increase his opportunities for receiving yards.
WR-Jerricho Cotchery (jackpot). Might as well change your name to Jennings and practice your TD celebrations. Cotchery was a great fantasy player with only 2 TD’s! Put the sleeper tag next to this guy, but don’t reach for him.
WR- Laveranues Coles (increased). I see Cotchery having the bigger numbers, but Favre will spread the love.
TE- Dustin Keller (from nothing to something). Favre loves TE’s, but there are still 10 other guys I’d rather have before Keller. Sleeper value.
QB- Aaron Rodgers (couldn’t be better). Favre burned his bridges and pissed off some fans with his distractions. Insert Rodgers into this feud, and people may cheer for Aaron out of spite. Look for A. Rodgers to have a great season.
WR- Greg Jennings (loses value). I don’t think this will affect him too much, but he won’t repeat his 12TD season of 2007.
WR- Donald Driver (big loss). Favre made Driver, and without him expect poor numbers. Also, James Jones and Jody Nelson have been gaining ground with the coaching staff.
