Weekend too short? Stuck holiday shopping on a Sunday? Either way, Sunday evening usually means an easy going night around the tube, searching for something good on. For us NFL freaks, it means fantasy football playoffs and being glued to the T.V., screaming for big plays, high scores, and touchdowns…and the Eagles at Giants game delivered.

Regardless of the winner of this game, the entertainment factor was huge, Al Davis “Huuuge”. The Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants were playing playoff football in December, and in my opinion get the nod for the best NFL game of the year thus far. This will be the one they replay all summer, this will be the one that Eagles fans hang their hat on, this is the one that sees dollar signs with the ratings for NBC.

After a quick start, the Philadelphia Eagles found themselves with a 14 point lead that they carried for most of the game, but the Giants refused to give up. In fact on paper the G-Men had 512 total yards in tonight’s grudge match, but mistakes were costly.  Eli and company couldn’t overcome a few miscues from the first half and played catch-up football for most of the game. Their biggest brain fart was punting the ball to Eagles WR DeSean Jackson, a young but talented lethal weapon for the Boo-Birds. D-Jack had a 72 yard punt return for a score along with 172 receiving yards and a touchdown that came from a bomb pass that hushed the New York crowd after a productive offensive drive.

The Giants will hang their heads low after this loss, but they really shouldn’t.  New York had the ability to move the ball up and down the field with ease, and were very impressive despite falling short in the end. Eli Manning was a hair shy of 400 passing yards and had 3 nice TD passes in a smart, productive game. The local media of course will not focus on that, and instead will have catchy headlines like “Slip and Slide” or “Butter Fingers” for an embarrassing fumble and turnover that came from Eli sliding head first and losing  the ball.

Turnovers were a major factor,  but the nail in the coffin had to be the Eagles 91 yard touchdown drive that ate up 7 plus minutes of the clock, which included zero third downs and was capped off by a McNabb two point conversion.

Is DeSean Jackson Gangsta or Concussed?

What are we to make of this? Fantasy owners and Eagles fans are dying to know the status of 2nd year wide receiver DeSean Jackson’s injury and his twitter page isn’t helping.

If you look at some of his other tweets DeSean talk’s like this all the time…but with a concussion getting inside info from these personal messages is near impossible. Maybe a concussed Jackson would write with perfect grammar?

DeSean Jackson  was injured on a hit after running a short crossing pattern in the third quarter. He didn’t lose consciousness and left the field on his own.

Mike Vick Is A Waste Of Time

Excitement, anticipation, eagerness. These words don’t do justice to describe the once long awaited return of Michael Vick.  Now that he’s back however, these words have been replaced with melancholy, inaccurate, and out of shape. Michael Vick has been a big waste of time for the Philadelphia Eagles unless he proves himself to be valuable over the second half of the season.

Prior to the Eagles vs. Redskins game in week 7, a whole to do was made about Michael Vick’s playing weight. It wasn’t until this week that he had gotten back to his playing weight of 2006. This is a huge on field factor and is coupled with the fact that others have gotten into the heads of the coaching staff suggesting not to trust this former all pro QB. The Eagles favorite play for Michael Vick is a handoff out of the Wildcat formation, and his stat line consists of 6 attempted passes, 2 completions for 6 yards, and 11 rushes for 25 yards.

The Eagles have a great history of team management over the past decade, so why did they opt to pick up perhaps the most controversial player in NFL history? It’s simple, because of what he could have brought to the team for only $1.6 million on the season. At this price the three time pro-bowler is a steal for the Eagles who were adding offensive weapons like rapid fire this offseason (Peters, Maclin, McCoy, Weaver, Ingram, Gibson, Stacey Andrews). Vick’s contract has an option for next season at $5.2 million; rest assured he will not be seeing that from the Eagles.

Vick’s presence on the field still has the ability to throw off any NFL defense, however not in the manner in which the Eagles use him. It’s known now that if Michael Vick gets on the field he will be taking the snap out of the Wildcat and either handing it off, or running the QB option. With this in mind, Vick’s presence is rendered null, and he is no longer even a decoy, just a waste of time.

The bottom line to the whole Michael Vick scenario might just be the presence of Eagles WR Desean Jackson. Jackson is a magnet for electricity, he’s virtually a human lightning rod, so it’s clear that Michael Vick is standing too close to him on the sidelines, but with those rubber cleats he is more grounded than electrified. Vick was once called the most “electric” player in the NFL, now he functions as the most prolific NFL decoy.

Quick Preview: Cowboys at Eagles

It’s amazing how the NFL betting landscape changes in a matter of weeks. Remember when the Giants were dominating the NFC East at 5-0, and the Cowboys and Eagles were underachieving? Now the Giants are stuck in third place while the Cowboys and Eagles battle for first in Week 9’s Sunday nighter. Go figure.

Despite their recent success, both teams have demons to conquer this week. The Cowboys are finally stringing wins together but haven’t done so against elite defenses; can Tony Romo avoid one of his occasional mistake-prone efforts on the road? Meanwhile, the Eagles look explosive as ever of late but also have a knack for losing games they’re supposed to win, so they have something to prove too.

Dallas Cowboys @ Philadelphia Eagles

Sportsbook odds: Eagles -3

As any NFL fantasy picks expert will tell you, Tony Romo is on a hot streak. Roy Williams may have blown off Michael Irvin’s offseason advice but Miles Austin sure didn’t; he’s exploding off the line and erupting for big plays galore, giving Romo a legit No. 1 option he hasn’t had since early 2008. Austin has five scores in his last three games and the Cowboys need him to continue that success to keep pace with the high-octane Eagles.

The problem for Dallas: their last three victims – Kansas City, Seattle, and Denver – don’t exactly have scary pass defenses. The Eagles sure do, allowing less than 200 yards per game and ranking second in the NFL with 23 sacks. It’ll be interesting to see how Romo responds when hurried all day; the last time he visited Philadelphia was in Week 17 last season. He threw for 183 yards and turned the ball over three times as Philly romped 44-6.

Pivotal Game: Eagles vs. Redskins

I hate it when someone hypes up a game beyond its value early in the season. We have all seen the late season rallies, the hot streak of wins, or the stars aligning for an open window to the playoffs (Eagles last season). But under the circumstances, the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins seasons could be at the turning point situation this Monday night.

Haynesworth

The Redskins have spent a typical mountain of money to bring in the top free agents to help win it all. An excellent draft can also be noted for the high expectations that this team had at the start of the season. So where are all the wins? Well, the Detroit Lions own one of them, thanks to a very unbalanced, frustrating offense.

The Redskins are the definition of flat football on offense these days, ranking at the bottom of most, if not all offensive categories. Injuries are starting to become a factor and jobs are on the line, including starting quarterback Jason Campbell who was benched in last weeks game against the winless Kansas City Chiefs. It’s also not a good sign when the head coach is rumored to be hanging it up midseason. Of course now it seems he will be here for the remainder, but nothing is in stone.

Philadelphia is 3-2 with a brutal uphill battle ahead of them. Not only have the Eagles yet to face a divisional opponent, they still get to see the likes of the Falcons, Chargers, Broncos, and Bears. Confidence has surely been tested in this last week, and now with questions at offensive line and linebacker, fans can’t shake that sinking feeling.

The Eagles just gave everyone the definition of what an overlook game is last week. Anyone who uses the phrase “overlook” could never give aAAA quick example, but the Eagles will come to mind for quite some time now. Philadelphia wasn’t just looking past the Oakland Raiders to the Redskins match-up, the Birds were preparing to face all three of their divisional opponents in a row, and they fell asleep at the wheel on the road in what should have been an easy “gimme win”. It stings even harder when a team like the New York Jets makes the same cross country trip to Oakland, only to blow the doors off the Silver and Black with a power running game.

The Eagles & Skins did buy a little breathing room on Sunday night when the Cardinals did the NFC East a favor by beating the 5-1 Giants at home.

Either way, if the Redskins lose at home on Monday they’ll drop to 2-5 and have to deal with a  media frenzy, surely forcing coach Zorn to stick his tail between his legs and call it a year. The Eagles could fall to 3-3; they are used to the gouging media so nothing would be out of the ordinary, but will they be able to battle such a difficult schedule after back to back losses to below .500 teams? I would like to think my pick of the Eagles winning (26-17) would give fans some reassurance, but despite a great start to the season of picking games, the NFL has become a weekly headache of upsets making it that much more exciting and making the phrase “Any Given Sunday” that much more true.

Eagles Strong Even Without McNabb

DonovanMcNabb1

In week 2 the Eagles may not “Brees” through the Saints like they did through the Panthers. The word out of Philadelphia is that Kevin Kolb will be starting in place of Donovan McNabb if he is unable to play on Sunday due to his broken rib. The players and coaching staff in Philadelphia have expressed their confidence in Kolb getting the start, but not everyone feels this way, especially Philly fans.

Rightfully so, Kolb has not been too impressive in his regular season performances. Last year Kolb was only called in for the second half of the Ravens game in which McNabb was benched, or if a game was clinched and they wanted to give him some snaps for experience.  Whatever his reasons may have been for being called on, in 34 pass attempts Kolb has thrown four interceptions and only completed 50 percent of these passes. If he does throw up a stinker don’t be surprised to see the recently re-acquired Jeff Garcia clip up the chinstrap and trot onto the field.

15008112353_eagles_v_ravens_featureKolb himself on the other hand is rather confident that he will do fine on game day and believes he has a more firm grip on the offense now and at game time. “I think I pressed too much, I tried to show everyone I was ready, you can’t press as a quarterback. That’s in the forefront of my mind: relax and play smooth. Let the guys we have out there make plays.”

Kolb has it correct, in order for the Eagles to keep up against the Saints this weekend, the players the Eagles do have on the field have to make plays. Kolb needs to get the ball into the hands of Brian Westbrook early and often. The most important key to victory in this game is keeping the Saint’s powerhouse offense off of the field.

Philadelphia Eagles 2009 PreviewEagles

As the saying goes: the game is played on the field, not on paper.

If there ever was a team that looked great on paper but didn’t reciprocate with the Championships, it would be the Philadelphia Eagles. NFL odds makers know that they haven’t been short on regular season wins this decade but have never won a Super Bowl. Coming close only counts with horseshoes and hand grenades, so if the Eagles want to win it all they’ll have to fix their short yardage game and be more of a threat in the redzone, both could be fixed with smarter play calling.
Off-season Transactions

The Eagles did some renovations in the off season, which should have plenty of fantasy implications. They upgraded their offensive line by acquiring Jason Peters and Stacy Andrews, but they will take some time to gel. The Eagles added some offensive depth in the draft with first-round pick Jeremy Maclin and second-round pick LeSean McCoy, but their most underrated acquisition might be fullback Leonard Weaver, who can help in their areas of need in the red zone and 3rd and shorts.

The media is making Michael Vick out to be the greatest weapon the Eagles picked up, but we are still waiting on a decision on when he can play in the regular season; rumors are that the Commissioner will announce a decision on Monday.

Does Shawn Andrews Even Want To Play Football?

phi2Posted on Philly.com and the Philadelphia Eagles message board- “Who has time for football, when you’re an aspiring super producer!” was the comment listed with 4 videos of Pro bowl Eagles guard screwing around on his computer in his basement. The videos are all of the “Big Kid” writing songs on his computer and describing them in detail. In one of the videos Shawn goes on to describe his passions in life: “For me, it’s God, family, then music…………” Eagle fans are a little confused, as football was never mentioned.

Coach Andy Reid is preparing to open the regular season without injured two-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman Shawn Andrews.

“I have no idea when or where,” Reid said Saturday when asked if he knew when his starting right tackle would return to practice. “Right now Winston Justice is the guy. That’s how I have to look at it.”

Andrews missed the entire preseason a year ago because of depression. He returned in time to start the regular season opener against St. Louis, but then hurt his back against Dallas the next week. Read more about the troubled offensive lineman here, after you watch this video

Mike Vick Buy Low Sell High

Mike Vick Buy Low Sell HighMike Vick

No team has made bigger headlines than the Philadelphia Eagles this off-season. They have sort of a Lindsay Lohan obsession with being the center of attention in the sports world these days. Whether it’s McNabb’s contract and demand for offensive weapons, or shocking the world with the signing of Mike Vick, there is always some news coming out of Philadelphia.

The Mike Vick signing seems almost pointless and troublesome for the Eagles. A shot at a Super Bowl run is definitely a realistic goal, but with questions and interviews from all types of media including those outside of the sports world, the distraction seems like more baggage than what Vick is worth. The notion that the Wildcat formation is the missing link to this team’s success is just stupid, as the NFL will no doubt adapt to the one-hit-wonder offense that so many teams ran last year. You have to figure defensive coordinators spent countless hours game planning for the Wildcat all off-season, just in case teams still decide to run it again this year.

Click on image to see videoProbably one of the stupidest things I saw all weekend was Jamie Dukes on the NFL Network drawing up plays on how the Eagles were going to use Vick in their offense. Jamie, a former offensive lineman, had four plays that fit more into a Harlem Globetrotters playbook than a real NFL offense. Crazy plays included McNabb flipping the ball to Vick only to then have Vick throw the ball to McNabb for a touchdown. Really? Such plays wouldn’t work in Madden ‘10 the video game let alone an NFL offense. At best you’ll see a couple option plays where Vick will be put in motion with the opportunity to throw, but I’m sure he’ll be more of a distraction to the defense and be used more as a decoy than anything.
