On paper, the Cincinnati Bengals should have one of the best fantasy football teams in the NFL. They have a very good running back in Cedric Benson, an excellent group of pass catchers with a great blend of promising rookies ( Jermaine Gresham and Jordan Shipley) and proven veterans (Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco). So why are they not being talked about as one of the elite offenses? The answer, surprisingly, is Carson Palmer.
Once upon a time, Carson Palmer was an annual top 5 pick at quarterback in every fantasy football draft in the country. From 2005-2007, Palmer averaged 4000 passing yards a season, with 29 touchdown passes. He made the Pro Bowl in 2005 and 2006. When Palmer threw his 100th career touchdown pass, during the 2007 season, he became the 5th fastest in NFL history to achieve this feat. He was looking like he was going to become a Peyton Manning like elite fantasy figure for the next decade or more.
Since that time, Palmer has struggled to match his elite numbers of 2005 and 2006. His problems really began in 2008, when he started and played in only 4 games. He was placed on IR after being diagnosed with a torn ligament in his throwing elbow. He elected not to undergo Tommy …Continue reading Carson Pamler Fantasy Boom Or Bust
Of the few perks that accompany being an Ohio resident, is that you inevitably end up competing in fantasy leagues with Bengals fans. And for the past five years, they’ve always been reliably predictable in over-drafting Carson Palmer (or any Bengal, for that matter). Yes, for all their base-level skepticism, it has been my experience that the majority of Bengals fans are almost shamelessly hopeful year-in, year out, and naturally this spills over into their fantasy perceptions.
Here’s how that process generally works: the pick comes around to said Bengals fan, and with all the anxiousness and jubilation of they blurt it out all anxiously, “CARSON PALMER!”, like everyone before and after him was contemplating taking the once promising USC alum and they stole him out from everybody. Generally the response that everyone thinks but no one dares utter is something along the lines of: “Sorry man, I hate to break it to you, but we’re still in the fifth round, you could have waited until the 7th and he’d still be off everyone’s radar. I’d rather have Roethlisberger with his six game suspension and all the conflicted feelings …Continue reading Carson Palmer: How Long Will We Wait
Those who aren’t NFL Draft regulars might be interested to learn of the yearly Compensatory draft picks handed out. These extra draft picks are awarded to teams that were poached last year in free agency.
This year, the compensatory picks will be positioned within the 3rd through 7th rounds, based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost. The number of draft picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four….in other words, if a NFL team loses players that are of value and don’t replace them within a off season they get a extra kickbacks to keep the league competitive.
If your a Bengals fan than you will be happy to learn that the amount of free agents lost last year was large enough to earn an extra 3rd and 4th round pick in this years draft.
Cincinnati Lost: Stacy Andrews, Ryan Fitzpatrick, T.J. Houshmandzadeh last year, without adding any starters in replacement.
The complete list of draft picks for the entire 7 rounds should be available shortly.
Chad Ohiocinco as stupid as that name is, can move boulders with the media and the fan base in Cincinnati. When he’s un-happy, the team plays poorly and the fans get ticked off. When Chad’s goofing around and getting his way, the Bengals are contenders.
This offseason, number 85 has made a small request to his front office; add veteran wide receiver Terrell Owens to the Bengals Orange and Black…he (for now) has been ignored.
The Bengals instead have gone out and signed a different WR option in Antonio Bryant, who has agreed to a four-year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals Wednesday. Dancing with the Stars will distract the unpredictable big mouth, and only time will tell if he cares or not, but if you ignore the wishes of your bratty kid and go out and buy him the wrong action figure….odds are he kicks and screams for the one he wanted.
Antonio Bryant had career highs with 83 catches for 1,248 yards and seven touchdowns in 2008 with Tampa Bay.
Only days before the free agency market is about to light up the headlines, Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco has be announced as a dancer in the upcoming new season of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. This is not surprising from what we know of Chad, but if #85 progresses through the competition, he could miss some if not all of the team’s voluntary off-season workouts. The Bengals can’t seem to escape the off-season headaches, whether it be players getting arrested or Ocho-cinco hogging the spotlight, this team is never had a normal off-season.
Trying to get info from Chad’s Twitter page is a lost cause with tweets like: @ladygaga you never replied back about being my stylist?
Wide receiver Chris Henry from the Cincinnati Bengals died Thursday, one day after falling out of the back of a pickup truck during what police said was a domestic dispute with his fiancee.
The young receiver had been placed on IR after a promising start to the year.
Throughout his football career, Henry’s temper and poor decisions got him in trouble. He was ejected from a game and suspended for another while at West Virginia, where former coach Rich Rodriguez told Henry that he was an embarrassment to himself and the program. Henry’s reputation already was costing him — the Bengals were the only NFL team to bring him in for a pre-draft visit in 2005.
Henry had all the talent in the world, and it’s a real shame his life was lost in such a tragic event.
This hit caused the Bengals to move the ball into position to win the game. The Ravens are no doubt an excellent defense, but ever since the loss of Rex Ryan their undisciplined penalties have cost them, in my opinion their two losses. Last week the late hits on Tom Brady were not all total garbage, and the reputation that this team is getting will haunt them all season. After the hit on Ochocinco there was another penalty which also moved the chains for the Bengals, and it seemed the Ravens beat themselves.
The Cincinnati Bengals have been one of the league’s lousiest franchises during the Marvin Lewis era but there is a seed of hope that they might turn it around this year – or they might just be a good underdog. Now that Carson Palmer and Chad Johnson are healthy, arguably the team’s two best players, the offense should get back to business. On defense, a slew of young talent is ready to start meeting expectations.
Don’t bother with the Bengals Super Bowl odds but keep a close eye on this team for fantasy sleepers.
Offseason Transactions
It was a fairly quiet offseason in Cincinnati. The biggest move was that the Bengals allowed T.J. Houshmanzadeh to walk in free agency and signed Laveranues Coles to replace him. Also, the Bengals did some retooling on their offensive line, but outside of that, the offense returns virtually the same.
On defense, the Bengals added safety Roy Williams and given that his best years were under coordinator Mike Zimmer (the tandem is now reunited in Cincinnati), Williams could again be an enforcer in the back end.
Offense
The Bengals offense is going to be much better than NFL odds handicappers remember it, last year, Ryan Fitzpatrick started most of the season. Needless to say, Carson Palmer is an upgrade. …Continue reading Cincinnati Bengals 2009 Preview
