NFL Draft Prospect: Jahvid Best

NFL Draft Prospect: Jahvid Best

Jahvid Best

RB|California

5’10|195 lbs.

If you paid any attention to the NFL scouting combine, you without a doubt know the name Jahvid Best. Running a 4.35 in the 40 naturally garners one some attention. Best could easily be a top 15 pick if not for a serious history of injury and durability. These concerns will likely move him to the early part of the second round, even though he still has the ability to make a serious impact at the pro level.

Speed, vision, and quick feet have allowed Best to succeed at the collegiate stage. Despite the small frame he is not afraid to lower his shoulders before contact and hit the inside holes with confidence which separates him from other RB’s of his structure. The superb instincts/football I.Q. that Best possesses makes him a home run hitter with the ability to take it to the house on any play.

On the contrary due to his size Best got mangled in pass protection and was more often than not taken off the field on passing downs. Unfortunately his speed does not translate into power, repeatedly being dragged to the ground upon first contact. Best seemed to lack the ability to break tackles and never looked to run through the defender.

A history of surgery on his ankle and elbow, and a 2009 season ending concussion coupled with his lack of power has made Best’s stock in this draft decline. Until proven, Best does not seem to be an every down back. His small frame and lack of ability to handle the pass rush are the specific reasons why. That being said, if put into the right situation (as a compliment to a power back) Best could still be extremely effective, Ala Felix Jones and Marion Barber.

Check this out if you haven’t seen it maybe you want to link to it where it says “season ending concussion” or even just put it in lol, because its so astonishing:
