NFL Draft Player Profile: Jermaine Gresham
Jermaine Gresham
Tight End | Oklahoma
6’6’’ | 260 lbs.
Gresham is going to be off the draft board by the mid-second round at the tight end position, but his value might force a team to spring on him early. Gresham’s nothing short of a phenomenal athlete and will provide a receiving threat from the tight end position. His very skill set is prototypical to the offenses run in the NFL today – your tight end needs to be able to chip a defender and catch the ball.
He has absolutely excellent size and his reach is incredibly long, making him a deadly red zone threat that’s going to pull in the big reception when you need it on the goal line.
He’s got the strength to be an elite blocker from the position at the next level, but doesn’t seem to care much about his blocking technique, as he is consistently allowing his pad level to get high during run blocking. But this has and will be coached out of him by the right NFL team.
As a pass catcher, he’s exactly what you look for in a tight end, and even in a wide receiver. He’ll catch the ball at the highest point, concentrate while making the catch and use his hands and not his body to pull the ball in for the reception.
He’s got the speed to demolish linebackers matched up against him, not to mention the height. You’ll see him lining up as the slot receiver on Sundays as well, as we’ve seen from multiple tight ends in the NFL in recent years.
His elite strength will also allow him to explode off of the line of scrimmage without worrying about defensive jams.
The major knocks on him are his work ethic and his blocking. As stated, he doesn’t enjoy getting physical in the blocking game but that can be fixed with proper coaching.
Gresham tore an ACL in high school and that’s going to have to be evaluated, leading to durability concerns. But that more than likely won’t be enough to knock him any lower than a high second round pick.
There are quite a few tight ends in the NFL that he’s more than comparable to, but the two that stick out are the Atlanta Falcons Tony Gonzalez and the San Diego Chargers Antonio Gates.
It’s tough comparing either one of those guys, especially Gonzalez, simply because of how productive he’s been over the course of his career.
He’ll play the game the same way both of them do – lining up in the slot and using speed and strength to haul in the tough passes when he’s called upon.
