Monday Night Football Kicks Jaw’s Out of the Booth

Ron JaworskiYou can dress it up all you want, but when ESPN said Wednesday that analyst Ron Jaworski had signed a five-year contract extension to appear on “other programming” on the network, it was clear that they just didn’t want him in the booth anymore. Last year the “Jaws”  along with play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico and color commentator Jon Gruden on were the regular crew for Monday nights. After a couple shaking years and more than a few horribly boring games, it appeared people were finally starting to warm up to the 3 voices. Let’s face it, Monday Night Football hasn’t been the same since losing Al Davis and John Madden, but this trio was better than the years past, remember Dennis Miller?

Jaworski called Monday Night Football games the past five seasons. The former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback will work various ESPN studio shows year-round. Gruden joined MNF in 2009 after coaching the Raiders and Buccaneers and agreed to a five-year extension in October. This is the first time in 15 years ESPN has used a two-person lead team on its NFL game coverage. While ESPN may think Gruden is ready for a bigger role, I have my doubts. His constant obsession with handing out odd nicknames or constant praise for anyone who touches the ball got to be a bit much. I never got the feeling that Jon Gruden said what he really wanted to say, I wish we heard more passion from the guy fan’s and the media dubbed “Ckucky”

One thing is for sure Gruden will have a lot more camera time in 2012
