The past few seasons, we have learned that certain offensive systems in the NFL can dictate fantasy value and production. The Green Bay Packers are one of the best examples of this and have had many fantasy relevant players the past several years.
Much of that credit goes to all-pro quarterback Aaron Rodgers and his ability to spread the ball around in a pass heavy offense. It seems like the Packers can always produce a waiver wire gem in the middle of the season. From James Jones to Randall Cobb, the Packers know how to draft, develop and stockpile receivers. However, Injuries have popped and with that presents opportunity and what an opportunity it has been for Jarrett Boykin.
Since week five, Boykin has amassed 15 receptions for 250 yards and 1 touchdown. While the remainder of the 2013 season looked promising for Boykin, we saw him take a step back this past Monday as Rodgers went down with an injury. So what kind of fantasy production can we expect from Jarrett Boykin going forward?
Re-Draft: Boykin’s value in redraft leagues will be tricky. For the rest of the season, I think he will remain the second or third option on the Packers for receiving targets, even when James Jones is healthy. The obvious issue with Boykin is who will be slinging the ball. After this past Monday Night Football match-up against the Bears, we know Seneca Wallace isn’t the answer and I would imagine the Packers will bring in a few quarterbacks for workouts.
There are conflicting reports over the severity of the Rodger’s collarbone injury and the timetable for his return. I think it will be hard to trust any of the Green Bay Packer’s receivers until Rodgers returns. By that time, it may be too late and your fantasy team may either be in the playoffs, or in the garbage. It may be a bit of a gamble to hang onto Boykin. If you picked up Jarrett Boykin off the waivers, i’m sure he helped you win a few weeks; however, now is the time to throw him back and search for another replacement.
Dynasty: For a while now, savvy dynasty owners have seen the gold in the Green Bay “farm system.” The Packers are legendary for drafting late round potential and developing them for a few years before they burst onto the fantasy scene. It’s always the “next man up” for the Packers as they rarely bring in free agents, especially at the wide receiver position. That being said, Jarrett Boykin is a great dynasty target. James Jones may not be in Green Bay in 2014, when he becomes a free agent after this year. This would move Boykin to the permanent WR3 role for the Pack.
While the same thing could possibly happen to Boykin in 2015, the future is still bright. He is only 24-years-old and will remain with the Packers through the 2014. He could be a great player, even if he does move on to another team. Boykin can be had on the cheap right now, as contending teams probably aren’t that interested in him. Now is the time to acquire him, as the Rogers injury and the uncertainty of quarterback play will drive his asking price down. Even if you aren’t a wide receiver needy team, I think Boykin is a great receiving target for your dynasty team for 2014 and beyond.
