Fan Fun At The NFL Scouting Combine
Fan Fun at the NFL Scouting Combine
While watching the NFL scouting combine a thought hit me: Wouldn’t it be great if the average fan could get a chance to test their skills against ultimately the NFL’s best future prospects? Kind of like when NFL experts make their game predictions and include the picks of a monkey who spins a wheel or picks a lucky banana out of a basket. Lately the bone-head lucky picks are more often boner picks where smoking hot women pick games of teams that they have never heard of. Never the less comic relief could add more viewers to something that many find very boring.
Imagine going to Indianapolis and showing off your skills or lack thereof? You would get measured, weighed, and fully examined by one of the best medical staffs around. Then off to show your stuff in six drills each participant will take part in. Here is a listing of these six drills and what the scouts will be looking for.
- Show your speed and explosion in the 40 yard dash. -you get a 20 yard head start
- Show your strength and endurance in the 225lb repetition bench press. –no steroid testing here
- Show your reach and explosive power in the vertical jump. -all 6 inches of vertical
- Show your lower body explosion in the broad jump. –you can swing from a rope if you want
- Show your quickness and ability to change direction in the 3 cone drill. –before you keel over
- Show your lateral quickness in the shuttle run. – front, back, front, back, front, puke..lie down.
Don’t forget about competing in the positional drills as well. Depending on your arm strength and accuracy you may want to compete with the quarterbacks. Or depending on your pass catching abilities and route running you may want to compete with the wide receivers or tight ends. There are also drills for the big boys who can go up against the biggest and best defensive or offensive lineman. Every possible position on an NFL roster will be on display, so even a long snapper or kicker could find a group of athletes to exhibit their skills with. By allowing fans to participate at the combine it would generate further interest in the scouting process and get fans more excited about the talents of the incoming rookie class. Although, this idea is a far reach as it most likely be considered a distraction. It would be fun to see an average fan make an impact at the combine.
