Draft Prospect: Pat White

Pat White Pat White will not be a typical NFL Quarterback; he is not 6’3″, and he does not have the frame to sit in the pocket and take abuse. He does however have amazing feet and excellent agility, making him a great candidate for a position change to wide receiver. While today many NFL scouts were excited in seeing him work out at his Pro-day, with the consensus that he was willing to run routes as a receiver, Pat White surprised everyone by spending the day throwing passes.

Pat White played quarterback for the West Virginia Mountaineers for four years. White was a machine, combining for more than 10,000 yards running and passing, and has been dubbed the real Mike Vick. Pat White is also 4-0 as a starter in bowl games, and 2-0 in BCS Bowl Games, becoming the first starting quarterback in college football history to do so. He has leadership skills along with excellent passing accuracy when throwing the ball on the run. NFL teams could easily transform him into another “slash” type player like Kordell Stewart from the 90′s, patwhite5especially with today’s Wildcat formation, and the evolution of many NFL team’s offenses. You’d think a player of this stature would be in high demand, but teams aren’t looking for slash players, and draft experts are cutting down Pat White’s decision to not attempt to make the switch to WR. He is a quarterback, and he can play at the next level, but if you’re looking at it in a dollar amount, his decision stands to gamble millions entering the draft as a small QB, as opposed to becoming a high 2nd or 3rd round pick as a Wide Receiver.

If history has shown us anything, it’s that players heading into the NFL who are too stubborn to show that they are willing to make a position switch are drafted late and forgotten about. Although, I remember watching Pat White playing for the Mountaineers on more than one occasion, and at times watched him dissect defenses in an almost laughable fashion. I’d love to see him get a chance to start at quarterback, and he will be my sleeper player on draft day.
