Denver Broncos QB Situation
Denver Broncos QB Situation
There have been ongoing reports that the Denver Broncos were looking to add a signal caller with one of their top picks in this year’s draft. Those reports are likely going to die down in the coming weeks, as Denver has made a trade with the Cleveland Browns to acquire Brady Quinn. This trade makes a lot of sense for Denver, as they are not giving up a lot in order to get a quarterback who, not too long ago, was a former first round selection but as of late has been dubbed a bust. Never the less, the risk vs. reward is worth the late round picks.
The Broncos now have four quarterbacks on their roster, last year’s starter Kyle Orton, backup Chris Simms, and Tom Brandstater. The addition of Quinn is going to hurt Simms’ stock the most. During training camp last year there was an open competition with Orton for the starter’s job, which Orton won. Simms has a lot to prove, but seems to be the odd man out of this quarterback quartet. Brandstater on the other hand was a rookie last season that has been praised by Coach McDaniels for his potential, so anticipate him to stick with the team.
Expect Orton to go into training camp as the starter as he knows the offense and ran it fairly well last year. However, Quinn is not being brought in to challenge for a chance to be the main backup. Quinn will be motivated to prove his critics wrong. The change in scenery along with a new offense that is better suited to Quinn’s abilities could open the door for the former Brown to wrestle away the starter’s job. If not this year then next year may likely be the year Quinn starts for the Broncos. After all Brady Quinn was highly touted by some as being the best quarterback from his draft class. On top of that Orton is playing this season under a one year tender agreement and a long term deal may not be in his grasp. Of course he remains the starter and takes the team to the playoffs; it’ll be interesting to see how the quarterback depth chart pans out in Denver.

Just wanted to add that after this post the Broncos did release Chris Simms as expected.
