Darrelle Revis Gets Paid

Revis is Back!!!!!

After all of the drama, Darrelle Revis has finally been signed to a contract and is once again officially a New York Jet.
Revis agreed to terms on a 4 year $46 million deal with $32 million in guarantees. Numerous tactics were employed by management to get Revis on the field during training camp (as proven in hard knocks) however he finally agreed to the deal when head coach Rex Ryan and owner Woody Johnson graced Revis’ home with thier presence.

It’s common knowledge that Revis wanted to be paid just as much if not more than Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha ($16 million/ year). Although the Jets refused to raise the stakes that high, they did offer revis a contract of 10 years that was worth $12 million per season, which arguably provided much more job security then his signed offer. However standing all alone on Revis Island, the all pro corner decided to op for a contract that was worth less money over a shorter period of time, possibly because he believes that he will have another opportunity for an even larger contract in 4 years, or possibly because the Jets simply do not value Revis as high as they did a few months ago. Bottom line, the 4 year $46 million deal that Revis signed gives him $11.5 million/year, less money then he initially asked for and was offered. I’m hard pressed to believe that Revis will be worthy of awarding a larger contract to in 4 seasons therefore he may have made a large mistake in opting for the shorter deal.

In other news around Jets camp, 15 year veteran fullback Tony Richardson has been cut from the team in an effort to trim down to the 53 man roster. This move is understandably not popular with the team; not unlike the Thomas Jones decision earlier this offseason.

Tannenbaum on Richardson via ESPN: “Each season, there are difficult choices when constructing the 53-man roster, and this year is no exception, we appreciate Tony’s contributions and leadership over the past two seasons and have nothing but the highest respect for him as a person and as a player.”
